Hardware wont work in OS X

Just installed macos x 10.2 and my old scanner and CD burner wont work, when i open the scanner in photoshop it says 'cannot find the scanner on the bus' it worked fine it os 9 , do i need to update or reinstall the drivers for it again, where can i get the latest drivers for it on the web, its a Epson 5500, also when I open toast 4.1 it wont recognize the CD burner but it works ok in OS 9, any help much appreciated.

You'll need to update Toast to 5.2.1 or 6. Hardware can't be accessed by applications in the way that was available through Mac OS 9. This prevents crashes, but also makes things more interesting in getting devices to work.

You might check the Epson website for scanner drivers. There is also a scanning application for Mac OS X (search VersionTracker) that allows older equipment to work. If your scanner is using a SCSI interface, don't bet on it working. The same goes for your CD writer. I have mine on a machine that can't run Mac OS X.

Thanks for the reply, managed to download the update for toast and got it working, I went to the epson website but you cant download a driver for mac os x, yes my scanner is a scsi, does this mean i have to go out and buy a usb scanner just for it to work in osx, or can i still use my old one, whats the name of that scanner software on version tracker?

Also I cant hook as many devices to my computer anymore, the cursor just freezes, do i have to go out and buy myself a hub so i can connect more? Does osx use up more power or something?

You'll need a new scanner unless you boot back into 9 to use it. Fortunately, they're not as expensive these days.

So SCSI doesnt work in OSX, the ports on the back of my hard drive, I bought a cheap USB hub and when i connect up my scanner and printer and CD Burner the mouses freezes on me.

SCSI drives will work.

I don't know about your other issue. Maybe try trial and error to see if a particular device is the culprit.

I have a beige box with PCI cards providing me with 6 usb and 2 firewire ports. I attach a printer, scanner, keyboard & digital camera to it with no problems. I opted to replace my internal CDR with a cheap CDRW from CompUSA for $60 and it works well.

Will I be able to use my old Epson GT5500 Scanner with OSX , its connected to a SCSI Card at the back of my hard drive, I cant seem to find any drivers for it, only for classic, it works fine in OS9, when Iam in in OSX and i go to open the scanner it says 'cannot find scanner, not on bus, scanner not installed.'

I think you're out of luck with the scanner, but before you completely give up check out VueScan. It can get some scanners to work for OSX which normally don't have the drivers. They have a demo, so you can try it for free.

The problem with SCSI scanners and CD burners is that there were some non-standard extensions added that Mac OS X doesn't support because of not allowing direct communication between applications and hardware devices.
