Why is Time Machine...

Taking 176.99GB of space on my external to backup 80GB worth of data from my internal?

Any ideas?

Are you using a virtual machine?

Have you kept track of how much data is backed up each time?

No, this is the first backup of a freshly formatted and installed Leopard system.

Nothing else.

Edit: It saw a cloned internal I had, so it must have been backing that drive up as well.

I ejected it and it is now only backing up the master internal.


Is there any way to tell Time Machine only to backup the master drive?

Yes, from that same window click on options. From there you can tell Time Machine what to NOT back up.

Make sure your external drives (including any removables that may be mounted at the time, like camera cards, USB keys or iPods) are listed in the exclusions in the Time Machine preference pane.

Also remember Time Machine is making and keeping MULTIPLE backups, not just one copy of your drive like Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Time Machine is NOT designed to clone your drive but to enable you to go back to any of MANY backups it has automatically created. Therefore it is always going to need more capacity than your drive.

I read a while back that a guideline is 2:1, meaning your Time Machine drive should be at least twice the size of the drive you're backing up.
