Do CD / DVD-ROM drives die?

The CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive in my G3 PB quit working. No idea why, but it's been about a year now and I'm struggling with whether to replace it.

What happens to these things? Do they just die, or is there somewhere in OS X I can go to get this thing working? :confused:

Pls advise. I've had the machine for 5 good years now, and this is the only thing wrong with it now.

BTW -- It's running 10.2.8 and has never run better. Except for the CD-ROM... :)

try going back to 10.2.6

They usally dont just outright die, although i have seen it. Usually its a few months of grief and then sudden death.

But you would definatly know that it was dying. I have not used a machine on 10.2.8 or really heard of any of the problems it has caused becaue ive been under a rock for the last few days but if it has stopped working since the update i would recomend reinstalling OS X.

Kinda along the reinstall OS X lines, but just try to boot from a CD. If it works, then you can be pretty sure it's software related.
