View Full Version : New Mac Pro on Dec 11? Possible clue...

Okay, so granted, this is hopeful speculation, but...

On Episode #0267 of GeekBrief (http://www.geekbrief.tv/gbtv-0267-geekbrieftv), Cali mentions that she was recently in Cupertino to meet with Apple, but she can't divulge why until December 11th.

This would certainly seem to indicate that :apple: has something to spring on us before year end.

Could it be the new Mac Pro we've all been waiting for?

it could be that, or it could be one of dozens of other reasons. It's all just speculation at this point.

I was there too! And I was riding the elevator with this guy holding a big black box with the writing "Mac Pro Mini" on the side of it. Underneath it was a box labeled "Mac Pro Ultimate" and I can't believe my cell phone camera died the night before.

Also, the guy in the elevator mentioned something about a PowerBook G5 as well.

Strange, I watched that podcast yesterday and don't remember the part about her not being able to divulge the reason why she was there. I remember her talking about some secret which she eventually divulged as being that there is a "special" Apple Store with special merchandise at the mothership (Apple HQ), but I already knew that. I'll have to re-watch it when I get home... the episode isn't on my iPod anymore.

At 1:32 into the episode, Cali says:

Visiting the Apple (store) isn't the reason I went to Cupertino. The reason I went, I can't talk about until December 11th. I'm really excited about the next two months. I hope it will be as much fun for you as it will be for me.

Again, it could be anything. An "I'm a PC, and I'm a Cali" ad?

Knowing that Intel has released the chips and a new Mac Pro seems inevitable, I'm just hoping that 1 + 1 = 2 here...

ahh the good old elevetor photos ... i still remember the sweet sweet irony of the "elevator" photos before the thing in paris where the imac g5 was introduced, where it was some sort of silvery/white LCD mockup thing and everybody was screaming "apple will not simply slap the computer on the back of an LCD therefor it is fake" ...while it turned out fake it wasn't that far from truth and made quite a few eating their words ;)

What if Apple will make an announcement about the MacPro's dropping in price for the last half of December or up to January 15th. I think if Apple were to drop the prices by 200-500 bucks, I would just get one considering my G4 is on its death bed.

Only minor updates are released by Apple without fanfare. Since Apple hasn't announced any media event for December 11, I doubt anything of consequence will be released then.

The following seems quite obvious to me:

Wait for a media event (ala Macworld) for a significant update

or

Get an insignificant update without a media event.

Which do you want? Since it's so close to Macworld, I would be disappointed if a Mac Pro update were announced before then because it would be a minor one.

Okay, I listened to the podcast and the quote is more along the lines "Visiting Apple wasn't the reason I went to Cupertino, the reason I went I can't talk about until December 11. I'm really excited about the next two months..."

So it sounds more like she went to Cupertino for another reason and decided to stop off while she was there (Ie. Apple wasn't her reason for being there)... but... I could see reading something into that. That's about the best thing I've heard to a rumor.

Anyways, we can see what happens on Dec. 11, but I'm skeptical.

Of course. It's Apple they can do no wrong. Honestly I hope Apple's big announcement is that they are porting Mac OS X over to the PC, so I can get a real workstation from Dell or HP and an Alienware 17" laptop. I could only dream about the sweet systems that would become available if Jobs did that. Not that the current stuff isn't nice, just that every once in a while I would love to have a laptop with 2 HDDs and 2 GFX cards and a 9 pound weight.

From Engadget moments ago:

Macbook ultraportable and Penryn Mac Pro due for Macworld, 3G iPhone in June (http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/06/mac-pro-to-get-penryn-blu-ray-burners-at-macworld/)?

"We've taken a "don't stop believing" approach to Apple ultraportable rumors up to this point, and there's no reason to think these "fresh" predictions from CNBC's Jim Goldman are anything different, but they at least serve as a nice refresher in the lead up to Macworld in January. Goldman predicts the new Pro laptop will be half the thickness of the MacBook Pro, the hard disk will be replaced with NAND storage, and Apple will be selling the thing for $1,500 -- the same price the black MacBook currently goes for. He's purportedly citing sources that claim to have seen the product, and says that the laptop is supposedly due to show up at Macworld. Jim's sources also say that the 3G iPhone is supposed to hit shelves by late May or early June of next year, which beats out some industry predictions of a late '08 release.

Of course, since it's just a month before Macworld, it's about time the rumor mill heated up a little beyond incessant Macbook and iPhone rumorings, and MacBidouille is stepping up to stoke the flames. The French rag is claiming that the Mac Pro will get bumped to an 3.2GHz eight-core Penryn setup (totally believable) featuring NVIDIA QuadroFX graphics (sure) with a BTO Blu-ray burner available (maybe), and that DVD Studio Pro will be renamed Disk Studio Pro and refocused on BD authoring (another definite maybe). On top of that, MacBidouille also claims that OS X 10.5.2 will be released, and that it will be "the largest and most important intermediate system update ever released by Apple." We're a little less sure we buy that, but as always, only time and Steve will tell."

That won't happen. I'd put money on that. Apple didn't bother updating DVD Studio Pro when they went from Final Cut Studio 1 --> FCS2 so why put out a minor update now and rename it?

But then again Apple has done other ignorant things, like that iMac slim aluminum keyboard, that have been a waste of resources.

Ironically, that keyboard is my favorite new Apple product release since the original Mac Pro.

I LOVE the wired version.

The only thing that would make it better would be if it could power USB devices that connect to it. It doesn't even try to power more than a mouse. My card reader (only compact flash) gave me the "low USB power" warning and wouldn't mount when connected through the new keyboard.

But I love the feel of the "macbook-like" keys and the solid, thin aluminum plate design.

I also really like the new thin aluminum keyboard. I was going to order a couple for my Powermac G4 and Imac G4. But since I won't be using either once I get my new Mac Pro, my wife and kids can use the old keyboards. They could probably care less anyways.

I would be very surprised with the name change. Especially for something as terrible as Disk Studio Pro (ack, not very Apple-like). But I wouldn't be surprised with an update that gave Blu-Ray support (and hopefully HD-DVD too). DVDSP really got shafted in the the FCS2 update, so hopefully they'll tag this on.

Well, I am sure that a lot of people aren't buying the machines based on their keyboards alone. ;)

That leads me to another thing that has been swishing around in my head. Will Apple give the new slim keyboard on the pro machines, or will they stick to the original keyboard? Personally, it doesn't really matter to me, as I will be using my original keyboard with FCP keys installed, but I am curious to see if Apple offers a somewhat flimsy keyboard with their pro machines.

Exactly, I'm getting so tired of these threads popping up every other day talking about how someone just happens to know when a new Mac Pro is coming out. It's getting to the point where I'm wishing I could block or get rid of these threads because all they are doing is choking up the Mac Pro/Power Mac forum area!

I know I'm a little adamant about this issue but it's really starting to become a problem on this forum. I know I'm not alone when I say this either. It's almost to the point where every other thread is about a new Mac Pro or when a new Mac Pro is being released, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a thread somewhere for this topic and only devoted to this topic?? Why can't these newbies and people that want to voice their opinion about the outdated hardware go there and talk about or better yet go here http://www.apple.com/feedback/macpro.html. Put your name in, tell them how you feel about over priced hardware, year old video cards, and how everyone and their nun sister wants a Mac Pro Mini even though it's a financial disaster waiting to happen for such a small user base.

And a final note, yes I know I sound irritable but I'm tired of seeing these kinds of threads. Yes I don't have to read them. That's true and typically I don't. Unfortunately to read any posts that have any substance to them I have to navigate through about four of these such posts before finding anything that has any merit!

Man I am glad I bought my Mac Pro in Sept.. it made me kind of a wreck with possible upcoming changes. But now I am glad I did not wait this horribly long. I feel your guys pain! I never would have thought January was the wait back in Sept.

You're just mad because you're posting this on a 2006 video card.

Naw, I'll just upgrade the cards in all my Mac Pros when they are available... :D

And as for this being a rumor site, that's fine. I don't mind 1 or 2 threads but when it's every other thread that's when I believe it's getting out of hand. Only Apple knows when they will be release so why bother posting about every Tuesday being "the day"??

 WHY?!?! Why do you insist on coming into the Mac Pro forum and trolling? This is like the 10th time I've seen you do it. You come in here and throw down a one sentence (usually) piece of flame bait. Of course people can't research that claim by checking your post history, as the mods have deleted many of your scribblings.

Go play with your Mac Pro, dempsey and stop trying to incite arguments.

Wow, some people just take humor way to seriously. No offense, but I think we are all a bit miffed the macpro didn't come out yet. :D

Its usually 9am PST. If its an event, it's usually sometime between 9am-1pm PST, depending on when he actually announces it.

I could smack Multimedia for convincing me to wait in August.

And you will thank him when the new Mac Pros come out sometime between now and eternity.

Lol... Apparently the reason for Cali's visit to Cupertino had something to do with HP's Smart Home technology. Nothing to do with Apple and nothing to do with the Mac Pro.

A likely story; NOT! Probably just a cover story to throw off the people trying to figure out when the next Mac Pro is coming.:D

if i bought it a year ago i'd be happy.. but i couldn't buy one now. you'd have to be desperate or stupid not to wait till macworld.

seeing as its an event - they'll probably redesign the whole thing
