iPhone mail app - autocheck on touch

What happens if I set mail to 'autocheck' on the ipod touch? will it work if the ipod is in sleep mode (and near a hotspot)?? does it drain the battery a lot? anybody have any experience with this?

Yes it checks while the iPod is asleep and no there is not much drain on the battery.
