I assume that the external is formatted HFS+ and that you have tried repairing the permissions and the disk

yah i've had that same message before when i tried to partition my external 320 hdd, i just totally erased my ext. hdd and restarted my computer and everything was fine,
even though this problem has happened a few times with different drives i just erase and restart (sometimes a few times) and everything works fine (fingers crossed 😀)

Thanks i will try that tonight. Just means i have to move 100Gbish to my other external which will take ages🙁
Oh i thought that 10.5 could "partition on the fly". Will move the data, earse and try again tonight. Still at work🙁

<= 10.4.x could not.
I'm not sure if 10.5.x allows for this. Let me check.
There seems to be a lot of thought that you should be able to do this, but even more posts about how it doesn't work. I think it'll just be safer to do it the old fashioned way.
