Incredibly slow display of PDFs with Preview.app

Please help me with this -- it's been crippling my daily work.

Am I the only one whose Preview.app displays PDF documents with selectable text INCREDIBLY SLOWLY? In my case, actually, the rendering of some pages seems to slow down the entire system, including all running applications.
