View Full Version : The 'am I the only one' thread
scem0
Sep 28, 2003, 02:13 PM
Okay, the basic idea of this thread is sort of like this:
Question: Am I the only one who _____________________________?
(ex: Am I the only one who doesn't like football?)
Explanation: Explain the question.
(ex. I can't stand how America is so into football when there are much more important things going on. etc etc etc.
And then people can comment on what you said. Like I could agree with you (or disagree, although I wouldn't).
I would post one right now but my sister has to get on the computer.

I think that this is a funny idea for a thread; I'll give it a go?
Am I the only one that feels that it's 'unfair' to the songs that don't get played as much in iTunes that they don't get played as much?
Ever since they added play counts to iTunes, I've found myself feeling remorse for those that don't get played as often and sometime sit through crappy music just to even the field. Weird or what?

I think scem's "Am I the only one who doesn't like football?" suggestion fits well here, especially when you're a guy in high school in the US (which I am). I just think football is too size-oriented, and I don't see the intelligence of it. I'm sure football-fans could explain to me how you have to use your mind in football, and I'm sure they would be correct, but I just don't like it, and I don't like how a lot of guys think it's unheard of for a guy to dislike football. Like, not being interested in football is some "silly girl thing"

I'm surprised to hear that coming from someone in Eureka, FredAkbar.
You'd think they'd be much more into Ultimate Frisbee up there...or has Eureka changed that much since I was there and it's just Arcata that's more hippie-centric? ;)

Yeah, football is way too much of a brawn only sport.
And I'm not saying that there isn't any brain involved, I'm just saying that the average football player wouldn't be too good in chess, or some brainy game like that.
I have no problem with people liking football, I just don't see why. I prefer sports that require agility, flexibility, and brains.
My favorite sport is diving, which doesnt require a lot of intellegence, but it require tons of agility and flexibility. Diving is such a great sport.
I am the same way P-worm. Or at least I did when I had a mac. ;)
Im afraid to post mine because I KNOW im the only male who can do it (on these forums at least) and theres a 99% chance that there are no females who can do it and it is very..... feminine. :D

I think the show is funny for a little while but every episode uses the same kind of comedy so it gets really predictable and really old.

Eh, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I think it's a great show...But not because of Seinfeld, and DEFINITELY NOT because of Cramer, but because of George Costanza...
I just think that's a GREAT character, very entertaining.
But like I said, everyone likes Cramer, but I never understood that. He was definitely annoying.
Let's see, let me play.

okay here is mine (well at least my first):
Am I the only one who can sing high notes?
I don't mean normal high notes... I mean Mariah Carey high... I swear I can do it. If I had a microphone I would record it and post it, but I don't have one.
There were these microphones that hooked up to my old stereo, I wonder if those would work. Ill try to find them later and see.
Well, I can't get any vibratto and they certainly don't sound very pretty, but I don't have loads of voice training like Mariah Carey. Plus I'm male.
Yes, I have testicles.
If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about download the song 'emotions' by Mariah Carey. (and yes I can sing along to this song - including the high notes).
But I guess 'sing' isnt the best word. I guess it is more of a squeal or something. It isn't very pretty sounding :).
Okay I'm really curious to see what commentary I get one this ;).

I just don't find them interesting, most are slow and boring. It is mainly a game of and by the rich. They charge whatever they think the fans can bare. Here in Boston they have the highest prices and the country and still fill the seats. No real incentive for them to win, just do enough to keep the fans happy.

well, as to drinking to have fun in college....it really has a lot to do with where your campus is located and what there is to do on campus.
My campus is located in schenectady new york, a depressed city with virtually nothing to offer to the campus community on the weekends (maybe some crack?) This is probably one of the biggest reasons why so much of the campus (myself included) drinks on the weekends/

There is a lot to think about in football. Especially at Quarterback. You have to get up to the line, read the coverage. By your 2nd step in your drop back you should pretty much know who you are throwing to by where the safeties and line backers go. Also you have to remember every play when they are written up like this:
Th-TrpsRT-XOrb-8129
Thunder (formation), Trips right (formation), X Orbit (receiver motion), 8 is rollout right, 1 means your flanker closest to you does a flat, 2 means your next man after flanker (wideout) does a slant, and 9 means your last guy does a streak.
Sucks because coach calls in a number and i have playband, and sometimes the ink smears on the band and it takes a bit to read.
I get pissed because the lineman have simple blocking assignments, and they still screw up. Even I know who they are blocking, its pathetic.
But anyways, Am I the only one that enjoys staying home and eating rather then going out?
Sure its nice to go out to a nice Sushi bar or something, but I can cook better steaks than I have ever had at any Steakhouse. I like to make myself a really good sandwich with some pasta, tastes great.
The only thing (in my opinion) worth while going out for is Italian food, Mexican food, and Japanese/Chinese food.

Ah, more about football. I might post a video of when I ran the Option last game.
We ran it once, and the linebacker came up to nail me, so i fell back and pitched it to the running back. It was picture perfect, he gained about 15 yards.
But what was even cooler...
We were doing a hurry up offence and our coach didn't call a play, so on the way to the line I said same play to everyone. The defence heard and yelled "hey same play watch out".
So, we run it. The linebacker goes for the runningback this time, leaving me a huge hole. I cut to the sideline, and our wide receiver makes a massive block on the corner. I gained about 50 yards (we were on our own 30), and I got tackled by the Safety. I tried to stiff arm him, and I did, but in doing so I tripped up out of bounds.

I think there's a difference between disliking something and not being interested. I'm not sure how you do not see the "intelligence of it" by football being "too size oriented". Do not be misled, it is a very physical game and it is mass on mass so it is advantageous to be big and or tall, depending on the position. Sure, there are players out there that are undersized and disprove the rule and certainly I've always been a big proponent that it's the size of the fight in the dog that matters, not the size of the dog itself. I'm not going to try and convince you to like football since you're entitled to your own opinions but perhaps clarifying what you hate about the sport as to clear up any ambiguity to whether you hate it or are merely not interested in it.

Good one. I consider most people 'filler' and they are in my way. They aren't original. They have to be told what to do. They buy the pre-made frozen pie crusts and pour in canned pumpkin with some sugar, bake it and call it pie. As if making pie dough was really that hard. The other day I was at the grocery store and they had pre-made pancakes in the dairy/instant breakfast section in a large tub. What is up with that. It's like it is too much effort to bake or cook something substantial for your family.

Wow, Id like to say that football does not require those elements you list, but it actually does.
Have you ever seen a runningback run before? Those guys are some of the most agile people on the planet. They have to make split second movements running at full speed to evade tackles that are coming at them left and right.
What about being tackled? When you get tackled, your body doesnt automatically find a comfortable position to land on. It requires a huge amount of limb flexibility to get out of some of those nasty hits and de-cleats without any serious damage.
And football doesnt requrie brains? It is true that most football players are quite stupid, but the game itself is more complex than you could imagine. It is very fast paced and things can happen in half a second that can totally change how the play is run, requiring the quarterback to make a command decision to the best of his abilities. Not to forget, the plays, both on paper and in calling, are very crypic by design.
It is very hard for a stupid person to succeed in football, though sometimes all that is needed is someone who can run the ball up the gut, which is what makes football so interesting; it is a multifaceted game.
It seems that the negativeness towards football may be stemming from something else- possibly a grudge against the sport?

Ah, you've got it all wrong.
Football requires all 3 of the items you listed. MAINLY the first and third.
ALL skill positions require an agile person. Runningbacks, wings, wide outs, quartberback. And thats just offence. On defence, its linebackers, corners, and safeties. Trust me, these guys MUST be very agile and quick, or they would not be playing those positions.
Our varsity quarterback last year was one of the most agile people I have ever seen. Look him up somewhere, his name was Joe Johnson.
You dont have to be as flexible in football as you do in...say...gymnastics
You have to know how to take a hit. The first game of the season will probly be some of the hardest hits I will ever take. I got blindsited about 7 times, and I didn't get a sack if it wasn't a blindsite.
And as for brains, thats a must. ALL quarterbacks have to know every offensive position, know all defensive coverages, and have to be able to read defences VERY quickly. Usually on a short pass, your key is a linebacker. On deeper passes, its the safety. You must know right away who is open.
But its not just QBs. Running backs have to be able to see holes, judge speeds of the defence, etc. Lineman must memorize all blocking assignments in all defenses (5-3, 4-4,4-3, 5-4, etc.)
wide outs must know if they should cut their route early and split the zones of linebackers and corners.
Not only that but QBs must have excellent footwork. On the film I have seen (Im not trying to brag), I have the best footwork in all of our school. The varsity quarterback is very good, but I do have better footwork then him, which is very important. I have been practicing footwork since I was about 7 years old.

That's not the point. I don't doubt that it takes a great deal of stamina and energy and guts to do what those guys and you do. How many guys on a team, about 50 right? That seems more like an army than a sport especially when only a few of them are doing anything at any one time. And what's with all those time outs? How many coaches and trainers and physiotherapists, etc, etc? In my most humble opinion, a sport is when one team faces off against another and goes for it. None of that namby pamby padding and endless time off from playing and etc, etc.
Baseball and basketball and tennis would be great sports if the fields and courts grew with the players and their abilities. Unfortunately, they are still the same size as they were when the average player was not much different from the man on the street. Cycling for all its technological advances is still a grueling, all out, no holds barred event as is running and soccer and rugby and sailing and skiing and all those other sports where a contest truly takes place.
Sorry, that's just the way I see it.

Football players have minimal amounts of agility when compared to martial artists, divers, gymnasts, and people of that sort.
It doesn't take that much agility to fall correctly, and trust me - the football players don't fall correctly. A professional judo martial artist - now that's another story.
If every football player took a year of judo I bet you money there would be 30% less injurys and players would play better.
I also don't think football is a very spiritually benifiting sport. In martial arts there is a very healing aspect to it. You can almost feel the spiritual aspects of it when your doing it. It is like doing moving meditation.
I would post more, because I have a lot more to say, but I have to go to school. :o ;)

Hey bicycle racers are a lot tougher than football players and bicycle racing is a lot more demanding of a sport. Let's see the typical bicycle racing season extends from Feb. into Oct ( for the road racing season). You have events like the Tour de France where the race generally covers 21 days and you have to finish every stage or else you get kicked out of the race ( no injury time outs no substitutions coming in from the sidelines. I've seen Pro bicycle races held in raging snow storms as well as in 1110+ degree heat. Bicycle races happen on roads where the fans can reach out and touch the riders ( unlike football players who are protected from the fans). I've heard the claim many times that just finishing the Tour de France takes 1 year off your expected lifetime.

11 players on offence, 11 on defence. 3 timeouts per half. We have 2 coaches and one trainer.

Why do you have to **** in your pants and throw up before being hit to have a sport be good?
Yes, you might be correct when you say that most people would **** in their pants and throw up before getting hit, but what does that have to do with anything? Most people would **** in their pants and throw up before jumping off the 10 meter platform, much less doing 6½ flips off it (which has been done) - but that is irrelevant.
I don't get what is so appealing about seeing men try to crush each other...
All I mean by this post is danger != best sport.
If that was the case then sky diving without a parachute would be the best sport or something along those lines ;).

Am I the only one who is annoyed at the results of this poll? (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=31529&highlight=case)
Only 33% (I'm guessing) of the people who voted that they liked the case would have said the same thing if there had been an Intel processor in it and Windows installed.
That really pisses me off. These people would say that anything that has an apple brand on it is superior to all other products, and is beautiful, fast, and perfect.
I'm not saying that nobody likes the appearance of the G5. I'm just saying that that poll was very biased.

So, as a cycler, YOU wear the padding and the frontal face mask if those above dangers you listed warrant you to do so, albeit at the cost of aerodynamics. Stop comparing apples to oranges. Understand this, whilst rugby may be a much more physical and physically endangering sport, it wouldn't make sense in American football for players to be knocked unconscious or leave the field unable to play every single down as a result of not wearing the proper protective equipment.

What football player plays every down?? Last time I looked there are a whole different set of players who play offense and defense. You also have specialist players to come into the game for special downs ( like 2nd and long or 3rd and long).

I hate when football players are idolized too.

scem0 you should watch more football, em. you'll find that flipping in the air is actually fairly common. there's no getting around that football is a full-contact sport, and it's intended that players do things like push eachother around and knock each other down, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is a game with a rather complex set of rules and a great deal of strategy. if you don't see that, it's your loss, but i will give you that there are plenty of fans who don't see it and still like the game--these are the people you probably dislike.
while there is not much of martial arts or diving in football (well, diving into water that is), there's a good bit of gymnastics involved, and, well--why do you think cheerleaders exist? for the swim team? ha!
so again, you should consider making polar statements like "exact opposite." they're very easy to refute.

I know that even if I did watch it and if I made an active effort to like it I would still prefer diving, gymnastics, and martial arts.
And I said they were 'almost exact opposites' if I remember correctly. I still think they are almost opposites.
I mean football requires brawn. Diving requires flexibility. Bulky muscles vs lean muscles. Football requires tactics and strategy. Diving requires none of that. Football is a team sport - diving is individual (other than synchronized diving which is only 2 people). Football requires increadible stamina (you have to run for long periods of time etc), diving doesn't require that kind of stamina.
I have trouble finding similarities between diving (/gymnastics/acrobatic sports) and football.

No, really...I was just sitting there, conducting my own business....finished up, turned around to flush the toilet, a nanosecond after I push the handle down I hear this 'clink' and I look, but don't see anything strange, just the last remnants of toilet paper being sucked out of the bottom of the bowl.
A couple hours later I needed to go somewhere and after searching all over the house, realized that I must have put my key in the pocket of the windbreaker that I was wearing, which fully explained the 'clink' I heard in the bathroom.

Football Flexibility != Diving Flexibility.
You have no clue how flexible professional divers are. If football players were half as flexible as divers I would be amazed.
I want to see a football player dodge a person and then pull of a round-off flip-flop flip-flop back-full. I really don't think it would be hard for a gymnast to dodge a football player, but I think it would be very hard for a football player to do the kind of acrobatics a gymnast has to do.
I'm not saying that a team of gymnasts would beat a team of football players in a football match, but relative to gymnasts and divers I don't think football players are agile or flexible.

Heh. A couple of years ago, either at the 2000 Civil War or 2001 Fiesta Bowl, an Oregon game was nationally televised on ABC. The commentators were making a big deal about the fact that Joey Harrington (then University of Oregon QB, with the Saints now?) is an AMAZING pianist. That kid's got some serious jazz chops.
He credits his mother for making him at least practice for fifteen minutes before going to play football with his friends in the street. :)

I'm not saying there are no intellegent football players. There are a select few who are intellegent and can play at the same time.
But wouldn't you say that if you picked out a handful of football players and told them to take some kind of test, and did the same with some swimmers/gymnasts/divers that the football players would score lower?
Judging from what I've seen of pro football players (the little bit I have seen) and from the football players at my school (i wish I saw less of them ;)) this is the case.
Maybe it is just coincidence that all the boys on my school's football team are rather unintellegent, and they are just shading my opinion. But I have a feeling that isn't the case.

scem0 no, it's not just your school. i know football players are often very dumb, but non-football players really aren't by and large a whole lot smarter, if at all. you're not exactly a straight-A student, yourself, are you? I mean, come on, you were going on about cheerleaders, and you know they are stereotypically stupid. as for the few guys i knew on our swim team, they weren't stellar students at all. lots of C's, several failing grades at various times in the year... they were nice guys, sure, but not smart. i really don't feel the inclination to extend my view of them, though, to all swimmers. even at your own school, i believe that you have a bias that's skewing your view of football players.

I certainly hope that you had a spare that was easily accessible! That was quite an embarrasing situation. Hope that you are able to have a good laugh now!

1110+ degree heat. Interesting. What planet are they racing on?

I guarantee you. If you were to compile a statistics in regards to football related injuries, they would far outnumber those bicycle related ones. I understand cycling is an extremely physically demanding sport, but you are once again trying to compare apples to oranges. Cycling stresses the aerobic endurance of the athelete whilst football stresses a combination of both, depending on what position you're playing.

it is just that in high school, football players are often popular, and so you wonder, "why is that stupid person considered so cool?" If the band geeks were considered so popular, I bet this thread would be arguing if band geeks were dumb. It is just visibility. At most universities, football players have a slightly higher graduation rate than the rest of the student body. Of course, they have tutors checking on them all the time, and scholarships to motivate them. Only a few are going to become doctors, etc, but that is true of the population as a whole.

I dont think football players are stupid because they are popular.
I think most are stupid because most can barely pass (or they don't and fail) classes that, to me, are very easy.

And I think I and others are saying you are probably correct that they are stupid... but that just about everyone is stupid, so why bring up the fact that this particular sub-population is stupid? Just because they are a popular, easily identified group.

scem0 you know, come to think of it, you really are prejudiced as hell about this. my dad has an IQ of like f***ing 140-150, has written 3 books, graduated college and went to grad school and got straight As there. i kid you not, he had a perfect average. never missed a question or lost a point on anything. and he was a football player throughout high school and college (less his senior year, when he dropped it 'cos he hated jimmy johnson, their coach). i am sure of two things, that there are smart people in football just as in any other sport or recreation, and that you don't know all, most, or even a few of the football players at your school enough to judge how many smart ones there are. my friend richard badgett looked just as normal as anybody else on our football team. not only that, but we had a bunch of football players in AP classes like English and history, most of whom got B's and A's.
and another thing--i'd take a below average intelligence hard worker than a lazy smartass. if you, with your c average, can just brush it off saying, "well i'm a lazy schmuck," what makes you think that a good number of football players can't say, "well i'm not stupid, i just get poor grades 'cos i don't have time to study"?
as to your other post--so some football players have trouble in classes you find easy. i'll bet you'd have a sh**load of trouble in some classes that i found easy. does that male you stupid? i'm sure that you'll take some classes later on in life that i found difficult, and you may find simple. are you going to accuse me of stupidity then?
once again, you're just bitching at the most visible group. you think they're dumber than everyone else for the sole reason that they get noticed more than you and aren't any smarter. i should break it to you now that the smart kids aren't, and never have been, the most popular kids in school. there's nothing wrong with this at all. being smarter than others doesn't make you better than them.
so, why are you mad that football players are more popular than you, even though they are by and large (no doubt) not as smart as you? is it because they are popular, or because they're dumb? i'll give you a hint: it's because they're popular. it's entirely natural to envy popular people and decry the stupid things they do, but if you think that they are any worse than another group of athletes in terms of smarts, it's a good sign that you're rationalizing your jealousy. jealousy is not a just emotion. you will never justify it.

i was with my friend a few months ago, test driving a corvette he was looking at getting--we had it for the day, to take it an hour out of town to be inspected by a friend of his, and on the way back we thought it would be nice and a cool experience to gas up the thing to half a tank, like it was when we took it out. so we pull up in front of 7-11 and start to look for the thing to open it up. he looks down on the left beside the seat--nothing. we check the instrument panel (which is pretty extensive, as you may know)--no luck. we get out and see if you can just push one side of it... nope. about 5 minutes and a great deal of embarrassment later, he thinks to check inside the center console. after shuffling through a bunch of papers (god those people had no respect for that beautiful machine), we found it and gassed it up. lol!

My dad played highschool, college (michigan wolverines), and semi-pro football as a quarterback.
he said the only time he ever cheated in college was when he had to pay some guy to take a math quiz so he could fly home and visit my mom (who he never got to see). he did good in everything else (school wise).
ShadowFax, who did your dad play for? I will post a pic of the 1976 michigan football team later on...

ok, so since this is turning into an American Football thread again;)
I totally agree that it is a sport. A damn tough sport, too. But I don't really like it, because
a) I find it boring to watch (personal/cultural thing I guess... I just don't 'get it')
b) I don't really agree with its 'values'. I mean you need brute force to advance (I know, tactics help avoid some of the brute force for a few select players) and pretty much brute force to defend your side. Just not the most creative/elegant way to tackle problems IMHO.
c) way too many interruptions between 'the moves' which make for a pretty slow game. I prefer sports where there is a better flow throughout...
just the 2cts of a lousy tourist
Plus those damn quarterbacks get all the hot chicks... :D
Hehe, I just saw 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' for the first time the other day, borrowed the movie from a friend. She said I needed to see it to learn more about American culture...the learning curve is steep ;)

But it does make me wonder... Am I the only one who hates baseball?
I have nothing agaist it as a summer pastime, but I could never stand to watch the game played professionally, and utterly fail to understand about half the positively obsessed people I work with (male and female--it's not just a guy thing).
For that matter, am I the only person on earth that doesn't like the Simpsons?
I'm in agreement on Sienfield and SNL, though--never got Seinfield, and they should've just called it quits on SNL a long time ago. I stopped watching about four years back when I realized it just wasn't funny any more.

I can get up quite high too. I don't feel like downloading a Mariah song for comparison, but consider Bring Me To Life by Evanescence, I can sing an octave higher than that. Like you, it's more of a squeal than anything else, and I can only do it when I know there's nobody listening!

3 friends of mine that ARE going to go pro. Their coach has all the connections, used to be a bullpen coach for the dodgers. They won the national championship last year (called the Palm Desert Tigers). They just had a tournament in las vegas last week, and swept it. played teams from oklahoma and stuff.
