A source has tipped us off to a pending update to iTunes and QuickTime that may be arriving around Macworld.

QuickTime 7.4 will include mainly bug fixes and security patches and support for the new version of iTunes. However, the details of the new version of iTunes remains under wraps at this time.

It should be noted, however, that Apple often has to update iTunes to support extensive feature updates in existing products, or when supporting new products.

Thanks, iPhoneGuy

Argh! With the recently abandoned development of Quicksilver, I'm desperate for the new version of iTunes to work with it.

As long as its fast to start up, that is all I want from iTunes, and I hardly use QT. Although, it would be nice to have video playing in the dock again...

Wonder if it will push iTunes to version 8.

If it provided support for using iPhone/touch/something new to be used as a controller for airtunes or the ability to stream to said devices then I think going to 8 would be worthy.

That will be the fix for the Unpatched QuickTime Vulnerability Exploited (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/12/04/unpatched-quicktime-vulnerability-exploited/) problem.

I think it will support video rentals with an update to AppleTV with new AppleTV's being released too (remember Steve said in August there was an update to AppleTV coming soon on the software side - we have yet to see it - I think because of NBC and Movie Studio issues.)

Maybe one thing will be addressing the bug some people have ran across with 7.5 and leopard. CD's only playing 2-3 songs then freezing the whole app.

The Crossfader playback slider problem is a priority :p

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/3B48b Safari/419.3)

I'm betting on movie rentals myself and will be happy to see it.

I would say that if it's true it's probably to introduce a movie rental service. But I think that Apple would announce it either quietly or at it's own event, and not at a Macworld.

But what do I know?

Macworld sounds to me, however, like a good moment to announce ITMR (iTunes Movie Rental) and some new consumer hardware (ultraportable).

Hopefully with this update iTunes will close when I tell it to, not shortly after.

Perhaps may see the iTunes WiFi Store on the AppleTV.

Same, I'm aiming for video rentals.

Fixing coverart displayed on ipod touches when going landscape to be just the art for that category/list not the whole of the library.

Options to see podcasts in video from the podcasts directory not just the movies one.

Being able to update podcasts with just the ipod touch and wireless not requiring a mac - just like itunes purchases.

Audio recording with touch.

Email on touch.

Google earth/maps on touch.

Being able to cut and paste on touch/iphone.

Some of the things I would like to see in an update.

What would really be nice if they fully merged the quicktime player into itunes.

Okay here's my 2¢

Macworld will be around the time of the iPhone Dev Kit release so the update will obviously include application Support for the iPhone.

Probably tighter integration with quicktime as that already seams to be the direction things are heading.

Oh and Rivix, ask and you shall receive check your iTunes store. Canada has TV shows, only about 12 but thats something. If you want more talk to the CRTC :)

full support in vista 64bit (and for iphone/ipod touch etc) would be nice, they've had long enough

I'd have thought that would be too much stuff to put into itunes - there's a surprising amount of quicktime pro editing stuff in there. For simple viewing of course there's now quicklook - with fullscreen without pro as well!

QuickTime 7.3.1
QuickTime

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-6166

Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, Windows Vista, XP SP2

Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted RTSP movie may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

Description: A buffer overflow exists in QuickTime's handling of Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) headers. By enticing a user to view a maliciously crafted RTSP movie, an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by ensuring that the destination buffer is sized to contain the data.

QuickTime

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-4706

Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, Windows Vista, XP SP2

Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted QTL file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution

Description: A heap buffer overflow exists in QuickTime's handling of QTL files. By enticing a user to view a maliciously crafted QTL file, an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved bounds checking.

QuickTime

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-4707

Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, Windows Vista, XP SP2

Impact: Multiple vulnerabilities in QuickTime's Flash media handler

Well, I could not open a thread in the place I thought this belonged in, but here I go anyway. ;)

I was speaking with a manager at one of the local BlockBuster's here and they stated that BlockBuster was in communication with Apple to bring BlockBuster Movies to the iPhone via downlaod, similar to the movie download from iTunes.

If this turns true, it will open a whole new market for iPhone movies! The manager indicated it was slated for the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2008! :apple:

Since the loss of NBC and its subsidiaries and the potential loss of Universal Music Group on iTunes (according to an article in the Jan Wired Magazine), I am hoping that Apple is able to rectify the agreements between these content providers, or perhaps take iTunes in a new direction.

One of the biggest features that I think we have been missing on iTunes has been digital software delivery. Several gaming companies offer this purchasing method of their software over the web - namely Electronic Arts - for the PC, but the Mac crowd has been left out in the cold without a service such as this. EA's web store is limited to gaming. It would be great to see Apple develop the premier web store for the digital delivery of all types of Mac software - and maybe later expand into the PC market ;). Besides, even if Apple chose to focus on gaming software, it would be a big push toward making the Mac a viable gaming platform. The nearest Apple Store is just too far away for some of us....

That would perfectly match with a rumored launch of a "new" 3G version of the iPhone with more memory.

I worked for blockbuster, and let me tell you, the managers are not privy to any information of that kind...could it happen, sure...it would help Apple out in the selection on iTunes, however what would happen with Universal Movies...Apple is in dispute with them as it is.

Yeah!

Just imported two CD's at a Constant Bit Rate of 256. At last. The annoying bug (and all the nonsense written about it from those who should have known better) is gone! yeah!!!!!

At last my iPod can have some fresh food!
