24-inch widescreen Dell monitor here. Bought it a couple of years ago when the price of the Dell 24-inches was less than half the price of the Apple 23-inch. Before the widescreen I had 2 monitors (15" + 17"). I prefer one very large screen to two smaller ones.

The screen on the left is an HP LP2065, a 4:3-ratio, 20-inch, 1600x1200 panel. I am using it rotated so that it perfectly matches the horizontal of the 30" ACD. It uses the same high-quality LG/Philips panel that the ACD 30 does - so it's a perfect match.
I did extensive research and the HP LP2065 is THE panel to get to use in this specific fashion.

(On the left is an Apple //c tied to the MBP via serial connection, serving as a text-terminal - read more about that in my blog post (http://www.bytecellar.com/archives/000113.php), written when the Mac in question was a G4 mini (now sold).)

Just one, but I technically have two primary computers so I have both dsplays side by side. I have my 17" G4 iMac and then next to it, another 17" LCD hooked up to my PC for my trading platform. It's nice having 2 displays!
This will change in a matter of days though, as my nice new 24" iMac is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow or Friday. :) Then I will have its 24" goodness next to my PC's 17" display instead of my old iMac.
Now that I will have an Intel-based machine which can run Boot Camp/Parallels I will require my PC even less, however I essentially need 2 screens for my trading and my trading platform is only Windows-based, plus it needs to run natively (due to its sensitive real-time nature) so I will continue with the 2 computer setup as it makes the most sense...

Why not just use CoherenceI only have the vaguest idea what Coherence is. I'd have to actually read the Parallels manual to be able to answer that question. Running the two windows OSX and XP in this manner meets my needs nicely. No need to read the manual if everything's going OK, huh?

Hey, HMac: What sort of beef do you have running those babies? Mac Pro, I'm assuming, but what sort of CPU?
I'm getting a Mini and I want to run Parallels fullscreen, in a second monitor, just like that. But I basically only use the PC for occasional gaming. I severely doubt that a Mini will serve me well enough to be both a Mac, and a windows gaming box.
Oh, and then there's the whole Mini-can-only-drive-one-display issue... Damn you, Apple, why can't you make an xMac? I need a GPU that cooks! And, no, I don't want your fricken all-in-one... stupid non-user-upgradeable shell...
Solutions, anyone, so I can have a beautiful desktop like you guys?

3.0 ghz 4-core Mac Pro with X1900XT and 9 gig RAM. Yes, it makes the room hot. Amazing to me how much heat comes off of those 30 inch displays.
The system works great. I also use XP via Boot Camp for FPS gaming. I've been very impressed with the way it runs Crysis and COD 4. I also am running Parallels/XP on my 2.4 MacBook Pro.

Ah so rather than taking some time to find out how to use this excellent facility within Parallels (which by the way is very easy to enable/use) you'd rather not and waste a whole monitor just for full screen windows...

To each their own :DI use XP full screen by choice - when Parallels comes up and the virtual machine window comes up, I just move it over to the right monitor and click the full-screen button. Otherwise, that window running XP can be resized to whatever size I want and I can place it anywhere on the two screens, and drag and drop between them whether it's full screen on two monitors, or just a little window. I just happen to prefer to use it full screen. You may prefer to use it in a little window, given your vastly superior knowledge of how to use Parallels, but this method meets or exceeds my needs, and as you say, to each their own. If and when I need it to work some other way, I'll just read the manual so I can do it the way you think I should be doing it.

You really should go on to you (http://youtube.com/watch?v=rN9jNNeEd98)tube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=HjVZt-G2qC8) and find a video of coherence in parallels. no... what if you need to be able to view a lot of information at one time.. spaces won't do that...
For the average user it really isn't a big deal, but when you get into music, film, and art production, you need a lot of realestate...

As a software developer I find the extra screen space much nicer to work with. You can have the code open largish on one screen and the application(s) you are working on open on the other for testing/debugging/etc and other browser windows for research, googling and general browsing (like these forums). :)

I always thought that there would be real-time issues via Parallels since it is not running programs natively - if not, that's good to know. Still though, I need a dual monitor setup (at least!) for my trading... My platform is Windows-only (no Java client) so I am stuck for now. ;)

Hey! What's that Sony piece of trash doing on your desk?!?!? :p
Oh, and in answer to the poll question:
When I had my PowerBook G4 1.5GHz 15", most of the time I had it in desktop-replacement mode, and so only used the external 17" 4:3 LCD I had originally bought for a Linux-running PC I got rid of.
When not running it in desktop-replacement mode, naturally I was only using it's on-board LCD, since nothing else would have been attached.
I still own an iMac G4/800 (which is what I'm typing this reply on now), and since it only supports desktop mirroring, there's little point served in using anything other than the on-board 15" 4:3 LCD.
I own an old "beige" PowerMac G3/300 which runs as a Debian-based server, and is normally run headless. However, when I do want to work directly on it, it just has one monitor attached to it.
Hopefully I'll be getting a new iMac C2D 2.4 20", and given how well I'm able to get along with what I have now, I kind of doubt I'll plug another monitor into it, since I really can't imagine what I'd need yet another desktop for.
So, in sum, at any one given moment, just one monitor at a time.

At work, I have two monitors connected up to an old PowerMac. It appears that I have Mac OS X on one monitor and Windows on the other monitor. I use RDC to remotely connect to my Windows box and then make the RDC window full screen on the 2nd monitor. It works great for my purposes.
At home I only have one monitor for the time being. If I get an new iMac at some point in the future, I might connect up my trusty 15" ADC monitor to it for extra space. I'm just wondering if I should get a 20" iMac or the 24" iMac. After seeing a 23" Apple Cinema display, I'd really like the 24" iMac.

I do a lot of PowerPoint presentations, and they incorporate a lot of video and still images. When putting them together, it's nice to have all of those programs and editors and data up and running at the same time. I need Parallels because usually, I'll write a presentation in PowerPoint using the Windows version because differences between the two in fonts and some other formatting means a PowerPoint written on an OSX version may not look or work right when presented on a PC. There are more and more Macs showing up at the conferences I go to, but PC's still vastly reign on virtually all of the presentation podiums (podia?) I have to work with.

I normally use one monitor for my main computer, my laptop. When I do video editing I prefer using two monitors with a preview screen, so technically three monitors but one isn't used in normal computer operations.
I have tried setting up two monitors for students I teach graphic design but they just don't seem to get it. It takes too much to learn the program and figure out the entire monitor thing. It seems simple enough, at least to me, but they just aren't used to it for some reason and it actually seems to distract them.

It's not really a matter of how important you are. It's more about how much you have open at once. By the end of this summer, I'm going to have a 24" iMac w/ 24" 2408WFP and a 15" MBP w/ 20" 2007WFP. I have so much crap open at once that I need all that space.

I'm the manager of the SCADA dept of my local government utility. SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, the ability to control physical processes and collect data remotely.
I have to manage 64 remote PCs, 13 servers, 648 racks of remote I/O, 53 IP cameras over a 572 square mile area. Displayed on the screen are 4 remote PCs and 2 servers, and one of the IP cams.
In my area I'm introducing the concept of running SCADA applications from Mac instead of the traditional M*soft environment. Now that Macs are using intel processors, and M*soft is pushing its agenda of software as a service, I'm very close to this idea taking off. My primary machine at home is a Mac, and if I could get Radmin to run native in OS X, I'd be using a G5 in my office.
I really enjoy the forum and appreciate the ability to participate. :apple:

I could see someone who is a stock broker having that many monitors. Well maybe not six, but I have seen them with three and four.

Unless I'm missing something, why would anyone need two screens on their desk? Isn't that what Spaces is for?
I use three! and spaces!
Here's what I do:
three screens are better than two, because if you look straight forward, you don't want to stare into a bezel - you want to see the center of a screen. That way, the two outside screens can be used for things you're not constantly working on - like mail, or some browser page.
I use spaces as well - I keep four spaces running -
1 - for most of my day to day stuff -
2 - for VM's I'm running
3 - for remote desktops I'm running
4 - all dev tools - one screen usually has the XCode documentation on it
The mouse I use has a bunch of programmable buttons, so it's easy to switch between spaces.

As a second monitor, I’m attempting to use what appears to be a 17” halogen aircraft headlamp, or is it a Sharp LL-172C LCD. Until my eyes recover I can’t tell you what my primary — o o hold on — now I can see again, though barely, through caloused pupils — oh yes, my primary monitor is a Sony CRT 19” Multiscan400PS.
One or Two, we'll see.
Admittedly, I don’t know Richard about dual monitor setups, save for the little garnered here, but the little Sharp seems to take over my whole system. My illustration and design work really require the use of a CRT. I posted yesterday about this in the peripherals forum, to no avail. Still pretty new around here, I maybe should have posted it in the graphics section, or here.
Anyhow, here’s a link to it:

Apple definitely has to either drop the prices or make the superior monitor to compete. I mean look at what people are saying--Dell monitors. They're cheaper, and most people don't need HD monitors since LCDs in general look really good--unless you go too el cheapo!

At the moment, a Cintiq 12WX plus a Dell 2709.
I'm running a MacBook currently, which means swapping the cables around when I don't need the Cintiq... such a shame only the Mac pro will support two external displays out of the box.
I'm looking a making the move to MacBook Pro, curious about DualHead2Go... but it'll treat both my external displays as a single unbroken monitor, right? That could be troublesome...

I have to displays hooked up to my GeForce 8400GS:
1: a 20" NEC MultiSync LCD 2080UX+ (1600x1200 pix)
2. 19" Samsung Syncmaster 940B, used vertically (pivot-turned), so the resolution of that is 1024x1280 pixels

I have an intel imac running 10.4.11. I recently bought a 52" Samsung LCD which I use as a second mac monitor via miniDVI out, to DVI, to HDMI and into the TV. Works great, in fact the 52" picture is far better than the same image on the 24" imac, even text!
My main objective is to bypass the process of converting video to DVD, since QT will play most anything. Here's where I could use some help: I can drag Quicktime onto the TV and command VIEW/FIT TO SCREEN, but I can't figure out how to enter FULL SCREEN keeping the window on the TV. Commanding FULL SCREEN moves the QT back to the imac and FULL SCREEN's it there.
Somebody smarter than me please help!

Well you can have the built in one plus an external. There is other ways of adding monitors but they don't always work great. It can be done though just gaming won't be so great.
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/ Is one option the dualhead2go also i am pretty sure some external graphics cards exist for mac.

Two 23", two 17", one 15".
I am ready for more. I run six spaces, and end up using four of them almost daily. I eat all of the screen space available and move on to more.

Is this at work or home? What do you do that you need so many screens?
I use a single 22" widescreen with 2 spaces, and it fits my needs perfectly. I wouldn't mind hooking my mini up to an HDTV, so I could watch TV too, but meh.

Is this at work or home? What do you do that you need so many screens?
This is my home set up. I got used to the space after having four monitors at work. I have kept every LCD I ever owned.
The 15" was my first LCD from ~2002, and it is used to watch what I trade if I am home during the day, and tracks RSS feeds if the market is closed. It is above my head angled down.
The two 17"s are used for a virtualization of OSX that is used for development and data moving, and a virtualization of Windows.
The two 23"s are where most of the work gets done. I have Logic set up on both screens for one space, my data software on another space, web browser/e-mail browser/IM on one, spreadsheet software on one, aquamacs/word processors on another.
It is not necessary, but I enjoy being able to work this way. If I was buying new, I would have probably gotten two 30s or a 30 and two 20s in portrait, but this set-up came to as I built upon what I already had.
These days, most of my time is spent on a 1280*800 laptop, so it is all relative...

Two.
I was very happy with my HP 20" LCD for a long time (about 2 years) until I started a new job about 2 months ago, where I have two 24" Dells... About a week after I started, I couldn't stand the "lack" of space I had at home so just went out and bought two very pretty 24" acers to go with my (reasonably) new Mac Pro. I just hope the new MacBooks will support two external monitors - I really don't need the Pro, but do need to replace a PowerBook G4.

Unless I'm missing something, why would anyone need two screens on their desk? Isn't that what Spaces is for?
Spaces is useful if thats your thing, but honestly, I could use 4 60" TV's to my benefit. I use so much software at one time and to go back and forth between spaces to switch to or from illustrator, photoshop, autocad, 3dsmax, rhino etc. would be a pain in the ass.

seriously all these extra monitors seems like a waste of energy. If they were solar powered then that's fine, but why the excess, you can still do work with one monitor just fine. This is my opinion btw, if you need it for work then I guess, no bigge.

If I hooked up 4 ~19" LCDs to my computers I bet they will need less energy than the average CRT TV everyone got at home :p
