Did you install the 5400RPM drive yourself, or did you buy it that way? Has it made things unbearably hot?

I definitely need to get some RAM.

I ordered it BTO from the Apple store the day it came out and doesn't seem to have any negatives that people worried about. The battery life is still in the 3 1/2 hour range and most of the time my PowerBook stays cold to the touch unless I am charging the battery or doing lots of heavy work, but it gets no hotter than my G3 ever did. As far as RAM, I hope to get a upgrade from Crucial once I get some Christmas money in a few months. :)

Powerbook G5's machine is well past that magic 100 level of Xbench. This is desktop-level performance. Very pleased to see these numbers!

If you compare the results so far, it's obvious that the 5400RPM is making a big difference. Those read-write times are MUCH higher than mine. Hmmm... maybe I should consider an upgrade?

ah, very glad to see those scores on the new 12". I'm trading up from an ibook 900 to that model, and I was worried that the performance jump wouldn't be that big... but I get in the low 40s on my ibook, so 85 for the low score looks great to me!

Hard drive speed has always been the bottleneck with PowerBooks. Notebooks in general, it seems...

Yeah, the HD on my G3 PowerBook was a real snail, so when I saw the option to upgrade to the 5400 for only $112, I took it and it really is pretty nice. I know it isn't as fast as a 7200 rpm, but for a laptop, it really flies and it's virtually silent compared to my G3, too. I did a search and found that my xbench isn't that far off compared to a 1.6 GHz G5 or a dual G4, either, so all in all, I feel pretty good. I cannot wait to see what will be coming when the G5 PowerBooks make an appearance.

Oops! I changed it...yeah, it won't be for another 2 years at least before Moto comes out with a 1.6 GHz chip! By then I am sure IBM will have G3 chips at 3 GHz!

Me neither, it looks like Apple wasn't lying when they said to expect a 30-40% jump in performance with the new G4 chips. All we need now is a score for a 17" to see how the whole line competes.

why would you feel bad about your scores? You can hardly expect the same from the 12" as from the high end 15", especially considering the 5400 RPM HD that PowerbookG5 has. I think the new 12" did quite well!

I also noticed that the Ti 1Ghz has a gig of RAM while your 12" has only 256... that would make some difference as well, wouldn't it?

The 12" got 119 points in cpu, and the 1ghz Tibook got 111 points, so the new cpu is faster per mhz it seems.

Not exactly like my DP 1.25 (135.49), but a huge improvement over the iBook 466 it replaced (30.25). I've noticed that the palmrest temperature is not very warm, but the underside does get hot.
It actually plays Ghost Recon well at roughly 30fps (1024x768x32 with Mipmap @ .08). This is good for such an intensive game. My DP 1.25 with alot more RAM and a Radeon 9000 (64MB) gets abut 60fps (1600x1200x32 with Mipmap @.09).
Virtual PC runs great too! Something the iBook just couldn't do very well at all.
In any case, I love this great little machine!

just for reference my 1.33 owc g4 in a 733 quicksilver with a geforce 3 and 1 gig of mem gets a 113 in x bench.

You should note that changing processor performance to highest instead of automatic gave a 60 point increase in the CPU score.

I just ran it again and I got a score of 108.40, up from 107.89, so it is fairly consistent I guess -- I don't have much experience in this field.

Hmmm, more than 5 points lower than the 15" with a 1.25. Must be the hard drive speed. Anyone have a 17" with a 5400 RPM Drive?

Is that normal? It does seem like the 15" models with the 5400 rpm drives have better scores overall than the equivalent models with the standard HD. Is that normal? I would assume that it would only increase the actual disk scores, but not the rest of the system.

I'm getting around an 89 on my 15" 1GHz TiBook.

Not sure I trust the scores though, since it's recognizing my CPU as 667MHz.

I think I remember hearing that zapping the PRAM will fix the problem when xbench is misreading CPU scores. But don't quote me.

Is it the new 10.2.8 update you are running it under? I noticed ever since going from .7 to .8, I lost quite a bit of performance, along with nearly doubling my boot up times and causing video oddities sometimes when I reboot. I'd reinstall .7, but it doesn't seem worth it if Panther will be out this month.

From what I understand, Hard Drive speeds can be quite a bottleneck, not sure if this would come through across the whole test though. The only other different between the two tests is that the 17" had only 512MB of RAM, while the 15' had 1GB. I should hope that the 17", with a faster processor and all, should be able to beat the 15"!

My guess is the (relative) small amount of memory on Gigwire's configs makes the HD more important, because the OS is using the HD for virtual memory.

That's funny, I remember when 16 megs was considered a vast amount of memory and now we are talking about a half a gig or so is relatively small. :D

Yea, 512 MB should still be a lot, but oh well. Anyway, I am adding an extra 512 today (iHope), and I will run the test on the 4200 drive and the 7200 FW 800 to see what differences appear.

And for those interested, there was a +20 point difference between the WD Raptor drive and the standard 160 GB drive that comes with the dual 2.0.

I am thinking of getting at least another 512 megs RAM for Christmas, so I am curious to see how it would affect performance with the internal HD, too.

Here it is. Not really what I expected. i ran the test a number of times, but in general this is what the score was. The Apple installed RAM is CL 2.5, while the Micron chip I used is CL 3, which may explain the lower score.

I ran Xbench today to reflect the changes after 10.3.2. This was on my system after an uptime of nearly a week since I updated and after I logged out and back in to clear cache and virtual memory.

edit: I should probably mention the specs of my PowerBook- 15" Aluminum 1.25 GHz w/ 512 megs RAM and 5400 rpm Hitachi HD BTO.

The only thing that confuses me is the fact that the 15" PowerBooks with a 1.25 GHz G4 seem to generally score higher in the processor benches than the 17" PowerBooks with the 1.33 GHz G4. Wouldn't there be a pretty decent increase in performance with the 17" versions since they have a higher clock speed?

maybe cuz 17" has better resolution and thats takes few points away cuz of video chip need few milisec more and the diff is just 0.8GHz.

Wouldn't that be .08 GHz? I believe .8 would make the 17" over 2 GHz. Either way, I am sure the higher clockrate doesn't make much of a difference, which is why I was so confused why Apple didn't just give the 15" models the higher clockrate, also. I seriously doubt that they'd generate any more heat or problems in the smaller case. Either way, the new PowerBooks score pretty high for a single processor G4 considering just months ago the older ones would barely hit 100 points.

1024 K of L2 Cache (@ 200 mhz)

I ran it first time without restarting the computer with a score of 52.8, but since restarting I have score of ~44 on average.
