Using iMovie '08 for simple .mov and .mpg editing, possible?

I have a .mpg movie from my camera and I'd like to edit the size, perhaps add a caption, and export it to .mov. Is this possible using iMovie '08? I figured this is common usage for the application, yet I can't get iMovie to recognize this file (or a .mov file I have from another camera) for import. Any help is greatly appreciated.

use MPEGstreamclip (www.squared5.com) to convert the video to DV and take that to iMovie. It'll work just fine.
