Lemme guess, a D100, or maybe a 10D?

Speaking of cameras, here are two, well, I can't call them baby's, but two extremely old cameras that I inherited from my grandmother (who died last year :().

It's a Rolleicord VB (Medium Format) and a Thorton Pickard camera.

1. 'Walz" flash unit.
2. 'Salada' medium format camera.
3. 'Bownie' medium format camera.
4. 'Rollei' 35 LED 35mm camera.
5. 'Pentax' MX 35mm camera.
6. 'Bionic' medium format camera.
7. 'Pentax' auto 110 (110 film) camera.

What's funny besides the fact that they're all about twice my age, is that they are all still fuctional and film is still made for them.

Well, my grandparents were really into photography, not professionally but sort of "eager amateur" and in their life they never traded in a camera but instead just bought another.
When they died it was passed on to whoever showed an interest, I raised my hand...

Along with the cameras, there are about 20 slide boxes with about 400 slides each in them of family photos and arty ones...

Ah. Is it just D-SLR's that follow the film aspect ratio then, because most consumer cameras are 4:3?

yea DSLRs follow the film ratio, though the chip is surely not 24x36mm unless you buy a kodak 14n or canon 1ds.

but they do that to protect the crop of using 35mm lenses. if it was a 4:3 ratio, the lenses would have even more bizarre crops.

Jeeze, there are so many and each are good for their 'own thing'.
the auto 110 Pentax is tiny so it's good for carrying along.
The Rollei 35 LED is only good for just family snaps.

The other ones are incredibly old and hard to use (no metering, all manual fixed shutter speeds) but must produce amzing shots...

-----------

Yeah, generally on digital cameras the would have somewhere on it "35mm equiv." when referring to the lenses.
So if a lens is 16-40 for the 35mm, on digital it might be 28-80 35mm equiv.

Because the sensor is much smaller than 35mm, it tends to be a extreme cropped image.

One thing (and this isn't a little thing) that I noticed about the Rebel is that the white balance is almost always off, unless you're in bright sunlight.

The d100 WB is bad, but looks like a ferrari compared to the 10d or 300d.

Weird.

There really isn't anything pricewise to compete with the Rebel. It gets compared to the Canon 10D & Nikon D100 a lot. It's the first DSLR to break the sub $1000 mark.

As for my CF, I picked up a Lexar Pro 40x 512MB. It's a lot quicker than what I'm used to (Lexar 4x). I need to get another though, at least another 512MB. I'm shooting RAW format now, and I get about 50 photos out of 512MB.

DSLR's are a tough game right now. The rebel, IMHO isn't gonna compete with the 10d or d100 but it;'s the only truly affordable one out there.

So it's a great value by default. I almost wish it were cheaper. :) That said, I played with a D1x yesterday and want one... $3000. I'll be damned!

So far, I'm amazed at the ease of use & technical ability as well as the performance of it.

The color are so rich, it's freakish almost. Detail is incredible, and clean. I'm most impressed with the quickness of the AutoFocus on it. Overall, aside from filling the buffer, this thing performs like a topnotch 35mm.

In other words, photography is fun for me again. ;)

better than the original, yes.
But
I was trying to emphasize the color of the image, while darkening the background, but losing the content of neither the forground or the background. Take it too far, and you lose clarity - too far the other way and you lose the details in the water (which may be important in figuring out your species). It kinda depends on the level of detail you need later. And granted, this is probably not the full size of the pic... fiddle with it until you like it, then save your alterations in PS so you can apply what you like to your high-res version.

That's my one beef with the consumer digitals I've used (including my Sony). Unless you switch to all manual, there's a noticeable lag, and even then there's a little.

Makes it very tough for action/timing shots.

the d100 uses the same focusing system as the f100 and n80 film slrs and the same shutter and viewfinder from the n80.

it's quick as anything. especially when you use some of the higher end nikkor lenses. whew!

As long as I do the half button push so it gets all it's objective settings my Canon S230 takes the photo the moment I push the button. In Manual if I lock the aperture and focus it also takes photos instantaneously.

Yeep. There's a mirror lock up option in the menu. Delays the shutter for a split second to account for that mirror slap.

That feature IS NOT on the canon 10d or 300d, but only on Nikon DSLR bodies.

Hmm, for now it's between the D100/D2H and maybe a Canon 1D...
No decisions have been set in stone though.

Or maybe a 35mm...

Moxiemike

Have you thought about a D1x?

6mp resolution, with an option for 10mp in Nikon Capture, moderately fast and amazing amazing resolution.

good link (http://www.bythom.com/d1x.htm)

I know the D2h is tempting because of the speed and the wireless connectivity, but the D1x will give you a lot of life, moreso that the Canon 1d or the d1h.

So for your cash, if you "go pro" get the D1x (or D2x if it's out. :) ) you won't be sorry. I'm actually thinking of buying a D1x very soon.

Makes it very tough for action/timing shots. I was trying to take a photo of a 9-year-old playing a fast marble game. It took me about 20 tries to anticipate the action by the right amount of time to account for the shutter lag. I finally got the shot I wanted. The "film" may be free, but the moment you want can easily get away. Thinking back, I see that I should have noted the settings the camera chose for the initial "bad" shots, turned the camera on manual, and made those same settings myself.

dpreview has tons of specs on the D2h. But i don't think it's your camera, per se. You seem to want the big MP, which this camera isn't (though it's resolution is probably as high quality as, say, a 1ds)

It's mainly a photojournalists machine, specifically for sports photographers. HUGE 8fps buffer has room for 40 continuous images, and it also have an optional 802.11g attachment for downloading pics to your machine. Pretty tasty, for those serious photographers at the Olympics (why nikon released it when they did was to have it available and in mass production for 2004)

Will only setcha back $4000

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond2h/Images/angleright.jpg

Re: the delay, it was widely accepted that even though the cam was supposed to out in October, that people wouldn't start seeing units until December/January. That said, the shift to November shouldn't affect that.

I shoudl have a D2h sample for a few days in the next week or so, if my local rep comes through for me. I'll let you all know how it works. From what i've seen of the samples, it's STELLAR. LBCAST CCDs reallyseem to kick the CMOS's arse.

Can't wait for a supposed 8mp D2x (with effective 14mp res). Drool. :)

value for the money? Sure. it's very much that... if you make a living off this stuff.

That said, for you, i'd say that D100 or 10D are still perfect value for ya. Nice prints at 24x36, good price, and interchangeable lenses.

$1499 each... which really, you'd pay $999 for an Eos3 film body or $999 for an F100... so you're right in teh range. :D

With Apache you can check to see if a file is being accessed through a site on the server or from elsewhere. Since that image is being linked from DPReview through MR it redirects it to the warning image.

Leeching bandwidth is frowned upon in web admin circles, so it's best to host the image on your own server or attach it directly to your post. ;)

I finally decided to check out this thread and I have to say that there are a lot of really good photographers on these forums.

I enjoy photography, but I don't do a lot of non-event photography anymore. There is one shot I'd like to put up, which I took on December 31st, 2002 at Venice Beach, CA. The last sunset of 2002 over here. I took it with a Nikon Coolpix 950 with a wide converter (24mm 35mm equiv.)

I'm a big Nikon fan, mostly because of my parents, who both shoot Nikons. My mom did photography as a hobby (she has an FE2) and my dad used to be in advertising, but now does it as a hobby as well (he has an F3T, the silver one). I have an F3 that I picked up used, but I've been using the digital camera to take most of my shots, because it's a lot more convenient than having to go and develop the film. I have to say that you lose a lot of the beauty of the film shots, but then again the Coolpix 950 isn't exactly the best of the best.

EDIT: Bah, Preview doesn't have image scaling. I'm booted off my iPod on my iBook (internal HD does not work, see other thread in Hardware Discussion) and I don't have ImageReady installed on this. I'll post the image later.

To be honest you don't need photoshop.

All I did was increase the contrast, crop the image and straighten it to a grid to get a flat horizon.

Something you can do in any reasonable editor - most probably iPhoto, though I use Photoshop.

(Also used curves a slight amount but the majority has come from just increasing the contrast)

The "no place to go" one is very striking to me. The lighting is great, and it works well as a B&W.

The perspective and geometric shapes in "city life" are good too.

I think the reflection one would be better if it had more sunset colors in it, but if it was never there to begin with, it's a moot point.

My subjects were Boris/Natasha (depending on sex), who lives at various locations outside my front door, Horace/Hortense, who is noctural and lives a block away, and Morris/Doris, who lives next door but has refused to pose so far.

I finally got a good shot of Boris/Natasha over the weekend. He/she has the same markings as Horace/Hortense, which is odd because only Horace/Hortense seems to be nocturnal. I don't know what species he/she is but now maybe somebody can tell me.

Boris/Natasha:

If so, my life has been in danger many times. I've taken my spider shots from 2 inches to 3 feet away. So far, no emergency room visits.

I think I read that there are only about 3 types of poisonous spiders (that is to humans) out of the thousands of kinds of spiders- so you're probably not in danger...

Boris/Natasha:

What you have there is an Argiope. I don't know the specific species but it is definitely in the Argiope family. They all look fairly similar. They have some other common names including Banana Spider (not to be confused with the misnamed spider from central America), garden spider, or Orb Weaver.

I happened across a good page with information on them. They list them as not poisonous but all true spiders carry some sort of venom. How each individual person reacts to that venom is unknown. By and large there are only a handful of spiders in the entire world that are considered poisonous. The common honey bee isn't really poisonous either unless you are alergic to them. So the moral of the story is treat them with respect and above all else leave them alone if you can as they are serving an important service in eating flys and other bugs that are way more annoying.

http://home.att.net/~larvalbugrex/argiope.html

Something to note that the page above doesn't list is that these spiders are capable of and known to create webs up to 12 feet across possibly even more. They have a very strong silk and if you run into one of there webs it's nearly unmistakable.

I do hope it eventually clears up. I know it's nothing like what happened in New York with foreign agents being spread in the air, but the thought of what chemicals may be burning in all of this could be a problem also.

Thanks. Just goes to show what you can do with a point and shoot Canon S230. I know I can do better I just have to implement more photo tricks. Some of them you just don't think of in the heat of the moment or you don't take the time to set up the few manual settings you have.

I'm going to try to get the bets photos possible out of this camera over the next year. The problem is recognizing a potentially great shot and taking the time to do the photo right. A laptop would probably help a lot as I could see the photo in it's full size right after taking it.

No climbing gear - just climbed up by hand which was really easy. Getting down was a little more difficult and I almost got a little worried at one point.

Nah, just modest ;)

The rock formation was like concrete with lots of other rocks in it. Plenty of handholds.

Going down was a pain (especially with a camera bag) since the slope at one point was about 70° or more.

Once I got down I talked to a Park Ranger and he mentioned that they have to routinely 'rescue' hikers who go up to see the sunset and then realize, especially after drinking their champagne, etc., that they aren't capable or really sure how to get back down ;)

Thank you, that's one of my favorites also. Though it was also a very special day. The weather and the trip and everything just were in tune with each other. I drove 14 hours that day from Grants Pass, OR to San Mateo, CA down the coast and through the Red Woods. It was really cool even though I have been through there before. I still like the Sequoias better though.

Something to note is I hardly ever touched up any of my photos until just recently. So if you are seeing a photo I have posted it's probably as I took it unless it's something I took this summer. Even if I did touch it up all I would normally do was an auto white balance. Also I have all my original photos on my drive which all have a resolution of 3.2MP 2048x1536. You can also access most of these photo as I host them with personal web sharing right off of my computer. There's a link for them on the front page of my home page.

The S50 is basically a compact 5MP. I wouldn't worry about 5MP over 4MP though unless you go to an SLR with a larger lens and better optics the difference really isn't all that great. Even a 3.2MP can print great 8x10s if you use a good printer or take it to a professional to be printed.

The S400 is a fantastic camera and if you want it and you can afford it now I would get it. Just think of the photos you're missing by not having it.

Even a 2MP with the right printer and photo processor can be made a 8x10. 2MP is the bare minimum though. It's amazing how much detail can be gotten out of a low res image through photo processing and high end printing.

My spider photos have been for semi-scientific interest, but I've also been trying to take a good photo of a spider web, for artistic purposes. Here's the one I like best.

I've watched this particular spider spin many webs, and this one was between a Princess Flower bush and some ferns. I checked it at different times of day and found one morning that it was covered in dew. By squatting down in the grass below it, and shooting up, I framed it with a Liquid Amber tree.

To make the bluescreen I just painted a bunch of 1/8 plywood boards with blue paint with a spec I got off the web.

Since we're giving sample images I just got back from a trip to my mom's in Christmas Valley, OR. Here's a sample pic of a cave we went to. It's called Derrick Cave. I haven't looked it up yet but it has to be the larges lava cave in Oregon. Unfortunately we didn't take the proper lighting with us when we went out exploring. Primarily because we weren't really planning on going to a cave. The photo shows a section near the top that is about 50 feet wide and 30 feet tall. Deeper in it grows to about 50 feet tall by the same width. We walked about a half mile in just this section. There are other section also so I would say all in all there are several miles of tube to walk. Unfortunately there are several impassable sections that you have to go up on the surface and back in so it can't get the record for the longest lava tube in North America which is held by Ape Cave on the south side of Mt. Saint Helens in Washington.

Something to note is that I haven't done any touch up to this photo at all. These are the colors as the camera took them and I would say that they actually need a bit more saturation.

Just have to say there are some great photos out there, I have been into photography for a couple of years now shooting mostly wildlife and outdoor scenes. I'm currently using a Canon Elan 7 and a Sigma 50mm-500mm zoom lens, great for those long distance shots. Here are just a couple of shots taken in Washington ( San Juan Islands ).
