Anyone else around here 'side from Eye & 'Mike, into photography?

I myself am into digital photography, since for a teen its much more cost effective on a ratio of shots taken to kept shots...

So is anyone else into photography, digital or not?

Well, I am into photography at least a little.
I am no pro, but I make above average pictures, and I think I have an eye ;) for good pics.

Looks like we will post some examples here?

I like taking digital stills and digital videos too. I like photo editing. I'm learning video editing. That doesn't mean I'm any good at these efforts, just that I like them.

I'm still trying to find the best time of day, distance, angle, and lighting to get a worthy picture of the big hairy spider down the block from me. (See Giant Spider thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37282).)

I dabble. I have posted some landscape shots from around Colorado on my website, I plan to start adding more.

This is one of my favorites, I liked the way that the dusk light was coloring everything.

I enjoy photography. i busted my old Canon AE-1 just over a month ago. i took it to get some pics of my best friends and me at the capitol building in Austin the week before i had to leave for Oklahoma. when we were going home, my friend janani opened the door near the curb (we were parallel parked) and then sat down, as did my other two friends on the other side of my car. as a result, the door got caught on the curb, and i set the camera down on the roof to help her raise the door and shut it. heh, i forgot to pick it up. about 2 blocks later i came to a stop sign. we heard this screeching noise, then suddenly this big black thing came crashing down the windshield in front of me. in a flash, it slid across the hood and crashed/rolled out into the middle of the intersection. the lens filter had shattered inside the lens cover, and it was full of scratches, but seemed mostly ok at the time. when i examined it at home, though, one of the many impacts it sustained had cross-threaded the focus adjuster. as a result, you can't focus it anymore. the thing is banged up, but just needs a new 35 mm lens. i actually have a 100-300 mm zoom that fits it, and it works with that, but what idiot carries one of those around casually? so i ordered a canon powershot s230 a few weeks ago, and i am very impressed with the quality of images it takes, my crappy photography notwithstanding.

I used to take a lot more photographs than I do now, but once I can afford a high quality digital SLR (I'm hoping for something along the lines of a Canon EOS-10D) I think I'll get back into it. Still, there's nothing like silver halide for the purest form of the art.

Here is probably the best photograph I have ever taken. It was with my old Canon Rebel G on Kodak Tmax 400 film (an EXCELLENT silver black and white film).

I picked up a digital camera a little over a year ago, and have really enjoyed it. I had always wanted to get into photography, but "life" gets in the way of the things we love sometimes.

I love the look of film! However, for the hobbiest like myself, the freedom digital give you is wonderful.

Yea. I used to have some stuff up at my website, but i'm reinstalling some php stuff, so it'll be down for awhile.

I started off when I was 12 on one of these. (a Nikon F Photomic T from the mid 60s (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/htmls/models/htmls/slr5965.htm)

Bought a digital in 2000 (nikon coolpix 880) and soon graduated up to the D100 DSLR (which is the cat's ass for under 2k DSLRs).

It's become an obsession of sorts, as i'm now shooting it with a load of lenses: a Sigma 50mm 2.8 (the sharpest lens on the market according to many sites), a Sigma 70-300, a Nikon 80-200 2.8, a Nikon 18-35 3.5, a Nikon 28-80 3.3, a Sigma 105mm Macro 2.8 and a Nikon 50mm 1.8. I use a Nikon SB-50dx for external flash, and carry it all around in a couple of bags. It's a blast and super fun, and gets me out of my house/office and away from Cabin fever. :)

I have some images up at istockpro (http://www.istockpro.com/file_search.php?action=user&userID=621) which will suffice as a sampling of my stuff until I get my site back up and running.

I've pretty much done it all photography wise-- from advertising shots for alcohol companies, weddings, travel photography, tabletop, lanscapes, and club shots/band shots (hence the fast primes).

I wanna get into medium format stuff soon, and hopefully someday soon get a nice digital back for a medium format. But we'll see. Amazes me, since i'm 100% self taught.

It really enhances my designs skills (i think) and gives me unlimited possibilities.

Anyway, i've rambled enough.

There's a ton of great shooters here... from Evo and Wardo (newbies to the scene it seems) to eye and mr. a (more advanced cats) to people who do some amazing work with entry level digitals.

It amazes me sometimes. :) and pushes me to go out and do more better work.

And remember, if anyone needs any pro-level custom shots for anything, lemme know. Unless you're Jello and want me to take pics of veggie hot dogs. ;)

I've dabbled on and off w/photography (usually time and money are my limiting factors). A few years ago my dad gave me his old Pentax Spotmatic. This baby is 30 years, completely manual/mechanical (the only thing that takes a battery is the light meter) and a lot of fun to shoot. Unfortunetly age is catching up w/her and somethings, namely the shutter and the light meter, just don't always work as they should. I'd love to grab a digital SLR but that is way over my budget unfortunetly. I recently (last week actually) got a good deal on a Canon s50 and I've pumped around 150 or so pix thru her so far and the more I learn how to operate her the more I like her. While not nearly as fun as an SLR this is more fun w/a point 'n shoot then I thought possible. I've liked to just a few of the pix I've taken. I really like using DOF and selective focus but that's hard w/a camera like this so I've started messing around more w/manipulating the apature and shutter speed.

link (http://www.kimery.net/photos/Desktop.html)

The s50 is the first digital camera I've owned and I really like the instant feedback and being able to skip developing and scanning in my pix.

I've started to get into photography this summer(bought my first camera in june). Some of my pics are a bit dodgy but then in some portraits i can perfectly capture the essence of the model which makes me feel all tingly and proud.
Anyway i like to mess with floral photography too. Here's an example,it was shot with my minolta 7hi.
Tell me what you think of it,although realise that it was originally shot at 2560x1920 and has been reduced to 520 by 390 to accomidate the file size restrictions

Nice photos. I was looking at them and thinking boy these look familiar then I saw the one at Multnomah falls and I knew they were. Then I checked your location description and saw you were from the PNW. Good to have more members from up here. Something of interest the first photo you have on your page is of a steam engine. My dad use to work for Southern Pacific Railroad and they were refurbishing all the pipes in the boiler so it was empty. He has a picture of me when I was about 6 years old standing in the front of the boiler with the front cover would be.

Also I noticed a misspelling on your page. You named a falls I know because I was there last week, "Latoual," it should be, "Latourell".

Finally you might think about organizing you photos by topic. You can see a method of doing that at my page.

Thanks for your comments about my photos MacBandit.

It is quite funny you have a picture of yourself in front of taht steam engine. I took that at a special train show in Cali while working for a software company. I believe it is based in Portland now.

Thanks for the heads up on the misspelling on my page. There are also some duplicates. I just threw some up there not too long ago, and haven't had time to sift through everything and fix the problems! I will look into organizing my photos the same way, it is a matter of uploading more, and getting them organized!

Actually the interesting thing is that I wasn't in front of the that engine I was inside of it. That engine has called the Portland switch yard home for at least 20 years.

I'm into digital photography... mostly nature photographs. I actually worked for (and am still contracting for) a digital photofinishing company, and they can be credited for getting me into digital photography last year. I had already been into traditional photography and took some classes in college.

It's amazing the quality prints you can get with digital photos now. Even my measily 2 megapixel can get 11x14 prints. I love it!

On my Sony CyberShot F-717, is there some way I can take panoramic shots?

I don't believe the Sony provides panoramic abilities in software. The way Canon does it is it gives you an option to take panoramas from left or right. After you take a photo it locks in the light level and focus so that all the shots are the same. It also leaves a little bit of the last shot on one side or the other of the screen so that you have something to align to. You can do the same thing by carefully picking things to align to before taking your shot. The easiest way will be with a tripod. Once you have your photos you want to make into a panorama you will have to find a program that stitches photos together. Canon provides a very nice program call PhotoStitch that does just that but unfortunately it isn't available for download. If you know someone with a Canon camera you might try the software out. Otherwise versiontracker.com lists a few different stitching programs though I don't know how well they work.

Check out a couple of my stitched photos.

Here's a QTVR I made when I first got my camera. I have more but I'm not uploading them anymore because they're just way too big. I recommend to right click on the link and download it to disk because it's big enough 5MB that it will lock up Safari. When you first start moving it will kind of jump between each images I think this is because of the size of the images. Once you have done a complete pan it will move smoothly. You can easily double this QTVR and still have excellent image quality.

I use a Nikon D100, which is now $1499 and WELL WORTH the investment. Especially if you like complete control of the camera, along with complete control of the file. ;) I used a Nikon 18-35 D lens for that landscape....

He posted his earlier, so that's just what you're remembering.....we had a lot of the same shots at times.

I never saw his version of the green leaf and drops, but here he is and b2tm in the same spot I had been 2 minutes earlier....

Your first image is stunning.... you could probably benefit from fremiranda.com's shadow recovery to bring out some of the colors in the foreground. And you're image looks cool... did you have the white balance set to something other than "sunny"?

The second is great-pure silliness. :D

No white-balance was on automatic. Thanks for the suggestion about shadow recover. I worked on the image a while but couldn't get a good balance between the top half and the bottom half. Besides I really like that cloud like appearance of Mt. Rainier. Once I get Photoshop Elements I'll make a mask and saturate the flowers.

By the way your suggested site doesn't exist. Maybe you meant fredmiranda.com in which case I don't know which tool you were referring to.

So I started my direct mail campaign this week. I went out on my own about a month ago, and am focusing more on photography than design. I've learned that my photography is only improved in the last year & a half, where my design abilities haven't moved nearly as much. It's also more fun for me, and I feel there's a broader market I can reach as well.

If all goes well, I'll get myself into an art gallery with some freaky photos of Ralphie!! :D

Tazo; I think picture 10 (on the gallery) has got to be one luckiest (unless it was set up :p) timing of a photo.
I just like the subject and how it was captured, I don't know about others...

---------

I don't know about others but I'm fairly interested in street photography, which has gotten me a reputation with my friends of being the 'public paparazzi', taking pictures of ordinary people.

This photo bellow took me a while to get, taken with a zoom lens, I waited until he expelled a puff of smoke and tried to catch it behind him.
I waited there for about 5-7 minutes until it looked right.
It's framed with the bin for a 'marker', it lacks contrast sadly and looks flat.

http://home.iprimus.com.au/netgainz/shutter/smoked.jpg
+=+=+=

Another one is this one, taken shortly after the above, over exposed obviously, but if I had changed to the right settings, I would have missed the shot.
Someone commented that the picture was of birds, and then commented that it was birds + 1!

http://home.iprimus.com.au/netgainz/shutter/birds.jpg
=+=+=+=

Here's one that I could have got technically correct, but it's the subject that matters... I hope...

http://home.iprimus.com.au/netgainz/shutter/clouds.jpg

Appologies for the long post.

photohead, you are really good at capturing a person in a way that makes we wonder what they are thinking or what story they have to tell. I imagine that you have stories to tell about how you got some of these photos, too.

As soon as I saw photo #1 (http://www.nathansee.com/images/large/01.jpg), I wanted to know the names of those guys. I probably don't want to know where they work, do I?

I like the way the man in photo #14 (http://www.nathansee.com/images/large/14.jpg) is off center, with a vertical shadow on his face and a diagonal shadow behind. I realized that one reason I thought he had a story to tell is that he reminded me of Edward Crane, Billy Bob Thornton's character in the movie "The Man Who Wasn't There". Compare this photo from the movie (http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0243133/billybobshadowTMWWT.jpg).

And what's the story behind photo #15 (http://www.nathansee.com/images/large/15.jpg)? Was it a silly spur of the moment shot or a carefully planned one?

photohead
Oct 4, 2003, 09:09 PM
thanks Q for all the great comments...I didn't realize the similarity with the billy bob thorton character...great observation though...as for shot 15...I was photographing this kid for a personal project that I was doing and we were in the middle of the street and he was with his bike and skateboard...we started to see all these jets passing by..and we started to laugh...and so I started to compose the shot carefully...there were originally one jet behind that tree...but as I started to take more and more pictures that second one came in and it looked as if he was some sort of alien and we all had a great time joking about it...I'm glad that the sense of narrative comes across in my images...thats what I'm really intersted in...hearing people's stories and listening to how they have become who they are, and capturing it on film is one of my passions....thanks again for the comments...

Hmm, depending where you're getting them from, you can get good wide angle lenses as low as AUD $300 16mm (which sometimes is effectively fisheye).

The penguins at the Salt Lake City zoo have a very large enclosure, yet despite that they huddle together in a bunch, as you see in the photo. When they walk, they all waddle in a bunch. I thought one of them was the "alpha" male, directing their movement, but when they made a 180 turn to face the other way, there was another penguin in the lead, and they did the same thing - moving together in their huddle. The end of my movie shows the bunch of them waddling into their enclosure. They went in there because a zoo truck drove by the back of the enclosure, and they know that sound is associated with feeding time.

Penguins are like most Americans: They have lots of wide open space, and they spend all their time crowded together!

I think a weekly or monthly photo project would be great. Spymac does a similar thing. They give them a basic objective for example they might want green circles and then people go out and get photos with green circles in them. Some of the photos they get you would never consider/think of for the photo assignment but they all seem to fit the requirement. It's really pretty cool.

And instead of per week, what about on a monthly basis? So like all entries would be due by October 31, the night :)

Monthly would be good.

Or bi weekly might be nice too. ;)

I understand Tazo... but still.. your photos are good. I'm guessing that if you're this good at your age (you're a young guy!) that in a few years you could make good $$$ off this photo thing. :)

Bi-weekly would work as well, I was just worried with busy people on this site, someone who likes photography might not have time...

Man I wish I had a nice cam that could do those long exposure types of shots, I think thats what they are. So you can get like the waterfalls in one piece, or the cars passing by. Dang...I had a really cool idea.

Focus on the cafe scene on the sidewalk, with the passing cars...meh

EDIT:

no motion please...I cant do the long exposure like you all can on this cheapo digital camera...

I understand.... but.....motion doesn't have to (or shouldn't necessarily) show movement. It can IMPLY movement.

Hopefully, and eye will agree i think, that a "topic" is justa guideline... how you interpret that is up to you. And you don;t have to go by the letter of the law. :)

You could photograph a snail and we would call that motion. :D

It's not the limitations of the camera but the un-limitations of the mind that make a good photograph. :)

Yeah, new shots and monthly.....I'm up for that.

Now what are the rules....

D

tazo
Oct 7, 2003, 10:02 AM
ok rules:

1. Must somehow be connected to the biweekly/monthly topic. If its not apparent, explain it later on

2. Must be a new shot. This will work on the honor system.

3. Don't copy people?

And what incentive do we give for people to do it.

But rules...

There has to be a cutoff date.
The photo must be taken within that date.
It has to fit the theme.
We need to pick judges who will pick the best ten photos which will be voted on by the community (via poll)

We should set up a thread that will allow people to get "critiques" if they wish.

Anything else?

Could we possibly make this have it's own forum. Like "Community Photography Contest"

Maybe the winner gets a free "demi-god status" or something?

I dunno.... or maybe the photoshop gurus here could all submit some tips/tricks/actions we;ve written and use those as prizes?

Okay this is getting good but I think there needs to be some ground rules. First off I think the thread should run two weeks at the end of it should be deleted to open up server space. Another option to deleting is to take hosted photos only no uploads. The thread should be photos only no chat beyond a simple description if necessary. Descriptions shouldn't be necessary though since the topic has already been set. Any image that doesn't meet the topic without a description fails in my opinion. The photos should be new ones only. No digging through your archives. Finally lets make it simplistic. Since Halloween is coming up how about objects related to Halloween in the spookiest setting you can get. Also no photoshoping beyond the basic touch up like colors and contrast.

Finally if it's found that an entry was taken by someone else they should be beaten with wet serial cables until unconscious.

Great stuff - but I'm wondering if its a bit top heavy....what are you trying to get across, the photography or the info on photographs?

The details distract from the imagery (the imagery is awesome) - maybe if you make the details available as a link/option? That way you can place an image on a page and have it stand by itself and not be surrounded by text that clutters.

Yea. It's a pre-done script, and I plan on doing mods. I like having the EXIF up there so people can see how things were accomplished, but I have to tweak the UI.....It was a pain just to get it to work.

I do think there's a bit too much imagery, and on some of the themes, the borders distract from the image.

I like how it attaches "gear info" to the photo to... and links to mini-reviews.

But it is a bit busy. And the search features are WAY convoluted.

I also have another gallery on the same site:

ever since i spent some time in switzerland, i got hooked on taking photos. i'm no pro, but i like taking pictures with good emotions - beautiful landscape or pictures that can invoke special personal memory in me. (usually pics of my family and friends or japan, where i only get to go once every few years)

the addiction got worse ever since i got a digital camera - now, there's no film cost and adjusting photos is easy! i have canon s230 - point and shoot camera but it's served me well so far.

i'll post a pic i took in japan from the plane right after this. it's one of my favorites because it shows the great urban sprawl in fukuoka, japan... strangely beautiful...

I don't know how I missed this thread earlier. Being a bunch of Mac-geeks, I'm not suprised (but I am impressed) at the creative talent around here.

I'm just an amature, although I've dabbled in photography since the mid '70s. My wife is much more serious about it. However, we have fairly limited equipment budgets. Our system consists of a Nikon F90, 35-70 mm F3.5, 105 mm F2.8, and an SB 27 strobe (currently broken...any suggestions on where to send it to get it fixed inexpensively would be appreciated). We also have a Nikonos V underwater system with 3 lenses, a close-up rig, and an SB 105 strobe.

Here is a link to my wife's portfolio (theres one picture of me in there...bonus points to anyone who can identify it):

As I said previously I prefer your "still" photos (train series, that infamous dock) as opposed to your landscapes. I find that your compositions in the landscapes are sometimes a bit sketchy, eg a non-horizontal horizon. Hey, I'm only saying this because I'm notourious for messing up the horizons on my landscape and have to rotate in photoshop :p

I couldn't decide if I liked mine in black and white or not, either.

Use a layer mask and lighten the sky up and then go to black and white. I think it will look really good.

So are you borrowing one or scanning 35mm prints?

I am borrowing one of my high school's 5 sony cybershots (2 yrs. old, 2MP) to take all the shots on my gallery.

Eye,

I am shooting them using the built-in B/W picture setting...

And I am glad ya liked my shots :)

Nice pictures of the railroad eyelikeart, Moxiemike, & tazo. Thank you for sharing. All four give a great perspective. It brings back my youth, when a had an American Flyer setup. My Dad built a large layout approximately 6 X12'. Quit an elaborate setup. Could store it in the ceiling during the summer.

Could be but I don't believe that is specifically what it's referring to. Anyone else?

I'll give a hint. It has to do with switching in a RR yard.

I personally preferred the colour versions. Those "pastel" work well together and help set the atmosphere.

I agree 100%

So, what cameras are everyone using?

Mine's a Sony Cybershot F-717. It's 5 MP w/a 5x optical zoom. I'm dying to get a digital SLR and really learn more about photography.

Are there any good sites for newbie photographers?

fredmiranda.com is good. you've got to comment on other people's stuff to get noticed. They're very cool and supportive :D

if you're a nikon fan nikonians.org is a great reference.

photo.net is snobbish but FULL of info.

and thom hogan (www.bythom.com) is GENIUS.

As i've mentioned earlier, i'm using a D100 and recommend it for ANYONE who wants a pro level camera with a decent cost.

They work with lower end Nikon lenses, which is something Canon can't claim, and it's worth every penny of the $1499 you pay for it.

I'm also using a 18-35 NIkkor lens which is mid priced but BRILLIANT, a Sigma 28-90, a Nikon 28-80, a Sigma 70-300 and two SUPER primes: A Nikon 135 and a Sigma 50mm. Awesome lenses both.

Plus a Nikon SB-50dx flash strobe. If you wanna see the d100 put through a TON of paces, check out http://mikemancini.com/gallery

and as eyelikeart can attest, i'll try to answer ANY and all questions you may have. Lemme know.

Also, would people be interested in me doing some forum/q&a/equipment reviews on my website?

Lemme know!

Yeah that's pretty much what I envisioned but it isn't quite as good as I thought it would be. How about applying your mask so that the sky is still in color but the tracks are in B/W.

Huh, I heard just the opposite. That the Cannon can use any of the auto lenses that fit any SLR Cannon and that you had to buy special lenses for the Nikon. Maybe someone was confused.

I had a 10d for a weekend and couldn't get a sharp shot with the cheap 28-90 USM lenses (about $150 bucks USD)

When I used the Canon "L" series lenses (L stands for not Low priced ;) ) I got good results.

I took about 500 shots.

I got the d100 a few days later, bought a Nikon 28-80G lens ($99 USD) and got amazingly crisp shots.

The D100 with an el cheapo lens stacked up to the canon L lens on a 10d. And saved me a ton of cash.

Pound for pound the D100 blows the 300d out of the water (though the 300d is a great entry level cam, which has many limitations) and is much better than the 10d in focusing and keeping your highlights exposed better.

Couple that with some decent midrange lenses and you have a STELLAR setup in your bag.

Agreed. I love the old timey train in front of the modern looking building!

However, as someone else mentioned, the perspective in 2 is great.

Mike:

Thanks for all of the great links. I've bookmarked most of them :D

My sony is the first camera I've had and I wish I had saved the $800 I spent
on it for a digital SLR.

Oh well, it takes adequete pictures. Do you mind elaborating on some of
the more advanced features gained by an SLR?

Thanks shadowfax, it is great to get feedback on my photos. The one you especially liked was taken on the Proxy Falls trail, a gorgeous place in Oregon. I must say I live in a great area for taking photos of nature!

Thanks also to everybody else who has commented on my photos, it is great to hear what everybody thinks.

First and foremost: bigger sensor = higher quality images and less noise at higher ISOs. IE, you can shoot ISO 1600 and have it be usable.

Try that on the f717. ;) 400 is usually unusable.

The next is interchangeable lenses. The smaller the zoom range in the lens, the better the optic. a 28-200 all in one lens is gonna be less sharp and contrasty than the combination of a 28-80/70-200 combo.

The drawback is that due to sensor size, DSLRS have a focal crop, making a 28-80 lense equivalent to a 42-120 lens.

That said, teh sensore only uses the center or sweet spot, the best area of the glass.

Controls are generally easier to access (though not so much with the 300d)

The AF system is 1000x quicker on ANY DSLR.

You have a greater range of accessories.

All in all, the image quality is head and shoulders above a consumer, and it's much for flexble and usable system all in all.

The d100 for example, you can control EVERY setting. It's daunting to be sure, but worth the effort

Wow, thanks for the info. You're most helpful. I would sell mine and look into
a DSLR, but I'm saving for a honeymoon

I noticed that anything above ISO 200 was really grainy.

I'm of the type that unless it's convenient and durable I won't have it with me. That's why my Canon S230 is the perfect camera for me. I can't seem to break it and it's small so I have it with me most of the time. What good is a 5 million Megapixel camera if you don't have it with you to get that once and a life time shot.

iJohn has one too. I talked him into it. Great camera. I've had mine for a year now and if you look at my homepage you will see the majority of my photos are camping. I even took it rafting. Serious rafting. I have a waterproof case I got at REI that it fits in like a glove. I'm glad I had it on the rafting trip. At one point I found my camera in the sealed case on the bottom of the raft under a foot of water. It had been there for at least 10 minutes. I opened the case and it was dry inside.

I have a few scratches on it and a small dent where I dropped it. Overall though the only thing that wore out on it was I rubbed the anti-reflective coating off the screen. The screen gets dirty pretty fast because I often don't have it in the case so I can get quick photos so the screen gets cleaned a lot typically with a clean dry rag.

You're gallery setup is great. Two of my favorite ones off hand are Lonely Barn
and Cemetary Chapel. There's just something about the lighting, clarity,
and colors that pop.

You're definitely right about yours taking much clearer pictures, too.
