mpeg-4 to iMovie question

I have just bought a JVC Everio (GZ-MZ275) and am disappointed that I could not import straight to iMovie (07).

I have installed MPEG Streamclip. If I convert the files to MPEG 2, I get picture but no sound.

I can get it to work if I export to DV. Does this lead to any loss in quality and is there any faster work around?

When I exported to DV, it resulted in a large black margin around the picture.

Sorry just worked out that I have been filming in widescreen. I am one tired luddite :-)
