I have been having the hardest time deciding what my new Mac is going to be--The 12" PBs look very tempting, but then it ocurred to me that the ibook could be had w/ a processor that was clocked just 10% slower. So I guess the real question is - how big of a difference is there between a G3 and a G4 at similar clockspeeds?

I just sold an iBook 800 and hot a 12" PB 1Ghz, and even though there is a 200Mhz difference there, I can tell you that there is a noticable difference. In everything from web surfing to launch times of apps, the PB is light years better. I even have less RAM in the PB than I had in the iBook. Personally, I would tell you to go with the PB if you can afford it.

Gus

Thanks Gus. I suspected it might be that way. Oh well, that's just another reason to go for the PB :) I also have a 802.11G network at home, so the iBook would have been underpowered with it's regular airport too.

Thanks again,

OS X, as well as many apps are optimized to use Altivec, a technology which is only on the G4, not the G3. Because of this you should see significantly better performance despite the small difference in MHz.

Exactly.
It will be a memorable day when the slowest proc of an Apple computer will be a 1 GHz G4. (OK, maybe the G3 + AltiVec.. 750 GX?)
