Looking for a strategy game for my father, who still occasionally sits on a broken chair in his shop playing Warlords II on an otherwise mothballed beige G3, so I'm wondering if there's anything similar in gameplay out there.

Any theme is fine, though I think WW2 isn't particularly compelling for him.

Before it gets mentioned, he's got Civ4 already.

I think you need to provide more technical information about the Mac he's going to be playing an RTS on. No need to suggest titles that can't run on older hardware.. What processor speed? How much RAM? How much VRAM?

24" iMac with 2.8 GHz C2D, 4GB of RAM

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant to imply that it was for a modern Mac.

lol, when talking about games, most important feature is "graphic card".

the strategy game I am playing is HoMM (Heroes of Might and Magic) V. there is a mac version. but I do think you can enjoy it better (more frequent update and expansion packages) with a windows.

Yes, but funnily enough, the 24" iMac of that speed only has one graphics chip option.

I've played the HoMM series and I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for - a bit too light on the strategy and heavy on the RPG elements.

Do you plan on using BootCamp? Because there are a hell of a lot more good games for Windows.

Anyway if sticking to Mac OS X, if he likes RTS', then I suggest Warcraft III. I also quite enjoyed Command and Conquer: Generals and/or Zero Hour.

Yes, he's got a Windows machine as well, which he uses for Civ4, solitaire and income tax (and nothing else).

I'm thinking more of a turn-based game (such as the old Warlords game mentioned in the first post). Frenetic clicking isn't his thing.

Ah.. then I suggest Medieval II: Total War (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=646708). A PC game only, sadly.. but a good one. Turn based, along with close in battles that can be played by RTS should one desire.

Well this is not a turn based strategy game but it is one of my personal favorites. Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. The computer should have no trouble running it. but it is quite a fast paced game. And it is available for mac and pc.

I agree battle for Wesnoth is good and very similar to the old warlords series.

Also if you don't mind some dated graphics you might want to try Dominions 3 its turn based, it plays on macs, windows, Linux, and will devour every spare minute of your time. ;)You can download a demo and try it out.

Savage is good fun, but is commercial for mac.

Download Savage Windows/Linux Free (http://www.s2games.com/savage/downloads.php)

You could always cider-port it to Mac like i did. there are a few hitches when downloading maps, but it's ok. unless you want to buy it.

Go and get Darwinia and Defcon. Both look beautiful and have long lasting appeal.
