I am debating updating the ram on my 700mhz emac. I currently have 512 and it runs pretty slow (takes a while to open programs). I would normally just go ahead and do it, but pc133 ram is pretty expensive. My question is would an extra 512 ram make a big enough difference to warrant spending $100? I am pretty new to mac so am not sure how much the machine relies on the ram and not sure if it is a good upgrade.

Thanks,
Bill

My experience with extra RAM - once you have a decent amount (say 512MB for 10.4 Tiger) more RAM will not make your computer any faster if you only run ONE program (normal programs, not some RAM monster like CS3 or something) at a time.

Switching between programs goes much better with more RAM and if you like to run 3 or 4 things at once (Mail, Firefox, Excel, iTunes is minimum for me).

I was thinking for maxing out my eMac 800MHz, but decided a $499 mac mini was a better use of my money. I then went and spent $80 shipped for 4GB - 3 usable - for the mini - oh well.
