I'm assuming it would play in a tunnel like thing using the clickwheel to move side to side to collect rings?

I'm assuming it would play in a tunnel like thing using the clickwheel to move side to side to collect rings?

From the info provided it would appear to be a conversion of sonic 1 - including bonus levels and a choice of one or two handed control systems.
:)

Now if only I hadn't spent all of my moneys on christmas presents.

Just a reminder that if y'all have a PC or Mac made in the last 5 years, you can run the game natively (as in, the exact game as it came on the Genesis) via emulators. Just yesterday, I downloaded a Genesis emulator and Sonic, because I wanted to play it on my Macbook. It's become somewhat of a tradition during finals week :^)

The funny thing about knowledge is that not everyone knows about everything at once. You might have known about emus for years, but lots of people new to gaming don't. Nothing's ever new, but plenty's fun to talk about.

Seems like: "Sega converts the Click Wheel into a four-way controller with a single button for jumping and spinning, replicating the basic controls of the Genesis/Mega Drive title."

If I had to guess; the original Sonic games used a D pad and only one button. So I'd say the click wheel functions as a directional pad and the middle button jumps.

That's....ya know..illegal and all.

If you own a copy of the game cartridge, and dump the ROMs yourself, it's probably not illegal. If you own the cartridge and download a copy, it's questionable. If you do not own the cartridge and download a copy, it's clearly infringement.

This is a great port, the first Sonic the Hedgehog game from 1991. The iPod's native resolution is the same as the Sega Genesis, so the game looks fantastic.

I bought the game and I have a little video of it too that I'll upload shortly. The control scheme is actually pretty good. There is a one-handed mode and a two handed mode.

The game only lags when loading a level or when you get the invincibility power up (which pauses for a second to play the music.) I'll link you guys to some images and media in a little bit. Thankfully this isn't a horrible port like the GameBoy Advance version. :D

NES emulator, for Sonic? Haha... ah boy. :p Try the Sega Genesis. ;)

Ok here's a short QuickTime video of a run through the first level. I cut out the audio since it was nothing but my fingers pushing buttons. It was sort of hard to hold the camera and play at the same time but, you get the idea. Next I'll post a short video of the menu system and such. :) :D

BTW the music sounds great, crisp and clear. Although I noticed when you get a speed-up item it doesn't speed up the music. Also in the beginning it runs a tutorial, I skipped that for the video though.

Can we expect to start getting games for the iPod Touch once the SDK is released? Is that the only reason why it seems to be excluded right now?

Though, It's moot thing for me because I'm waiting until the touch is updated with at least 32GB capacity before I get one. Now, if I get an iPod Classic under the tree this year, I am so downloading Sonic. :)

Yes, I guess it is fortunate no one is forcing me to download them. Or songs illegally. Or forcing me to shoplift a snickers bar. That's makes them not nearly as bad when someone just chooses to do it . . . .

Heck, it might not even be illegal if no one is forcing me to do it

Sonic was a fun game. One of the few Sega games that I played at my friend's house. We could never own two consoles and always had Nintendo.

If that's how your logic works, go for it... :^)

And to the other dude, yeah, Genesis all the way. I can't remember whatever happened to mine. Sonic was definitely one of its best games, though. The entire gaming industry could learn a lot from the '90s--what makes games good doesn't necessarily have anything to do with graphics, but with gameplay. Games like Sonic and Mario are still being played today, because they're fun. Manufacturers don't understand that (or don't want to), and put all of their money into designing things that require newer and newer video cards and an endless chain of support kits (walkthroughs, add-ons, patches, etc). I guess it's easier to design a dull, processor heavy game than a simple, interesting one.

as usual they never put enough towards the Mac. :(

seeing as how there are more iPods in peoples hands then there are macs - i'm sure SEGA saw this as a profitable platform to develop for. this is what SEGA was changing their market strategy to back when they announced they were going software and dropping hardware. small games for mobile devices. and based on the feedback already being generated, i'm sure they will sell quite a few downloads of sonic.

sonic is perfect for the mobile platform too! its mostly about fast twitching movement and playing in small doses.

It's a shame these games are so much more expensive in the UK. I would actually consider buying a couple if the prices were the same as the US prices.

US price of $5 = 2.50GBP (approx.) + VAT@ 17.5% = 2.94
Actual price? 3.99!!

Sorry, that's just greed, I can't find any other explanation. It's not like they need to pay for physical shipping, and they don't need to cover currency fluctuations that much.

I thought I'd just mention that the best original (and legal) Sonic the Hedgehog experience is Xbox 360 as an Arcade title; it plays flawlessly and the visuals have been tweaked just enough so that it keeps the original look of the game even while playing on an HDTV. That said, most emulators also do a pretty good job of smoothing out games; I played plenty of Sonic on my G4 Cube a few years back.

For those of you curious of how the controls work you can look at this diagram below. It's shown in the game's information after you buy it, which I think is a little silly, they should have it available for you to see before you buy it. Anyway a diagram is posted below explaining the controls. :)

Also there is a little bug in the game, if you seem to be whizzing by too fast the game will freeze, showing a black bar at the top of the screen. At this point you are sent back to the iPod main menu. If you click to play the game again you will start out on the same level - only in the beginning. After all it is version 1.0.0. :p

I don't think this type of game would be as enjoyable on a touch screen since there is not a lot of feedback. I don't think it would be too difficult to create a Game Pad attachment for the iPhone or iPod. But of course Apple would have to create it themselves, except for the iPhone, thanks to the SDK in February it may make it a bit easier for others to create one. ;)

You do realize this is illegal right?

In many cases, using an emulator like MAME is not illegal; such is the case for someone who owns an NES or Sega ROM and downloads the MAME ROM or extracts it from the game itself.

I've had a bunch of games for my old Sega Genesis (which is now broken) laying around for quite some time, and I'm pretty sure that I have the legal right to play those same games (not others, mind you) on my computer.

Yes, but you do not have the legal right to download those games.

My car has a dented hood, does that entitle me to steal a new hood from dodge? or a junkyard for that matter?

This is from nintendo - but should be the same application for sega (as far as I know Sega hasn't said it was ok to download their games for free)

Hey Apple, when do the rest of us who bought iPod games before the launch of the new iPods get to use those old games on our new iPods? When do we get free upgrades to the latest point revision?

Oh right.. nevermind.

I just bought both the Sonic and Bomberman games for my nano... I'll post reviews and comments later.

I really dont know why??
Sonic was Sega's mascot. Sega was the anti-Nintendo. They advertised "Genesis does what Nintendon't".

Plus Sonic was on the Genesis, which was the SNES competitor, more advanced than NES.

Asking if Sonic is available for NES is like asking if Final Cut Pro is available for Windows 98 :)

Yes, but you do not have the legal right to download those games.

Perhaps not but if you own the game ROM then you have a legal right to have the data from the ROM on your computer under the backup clause of the DMCA. Even if someone really cared to sue you for downloading it (which I really doubt they would over these old ROM based games) the case probably wouldn't hold up in court since you had a legal right to have that data on your hard drive.

My car has a dented hood, does that entitle me to steal a new hood from dodge? or a junkyard for that matter?

Ahh...no, not the same thing. In your scenario someone that owned a hood would then be missing a hood, where in the downloading case you are just making a copy. I'm not saying illegal copying is right, but it's not the same.

Cool! Sonic and Bomberman!
I know what I'll be spending my Christmas iTunes cards on now. :)

This news made me go back and play Sonic Rush on the DS, and it reminded me of one thing - how I hate the water levels with a passion. But maybe that's just Sonic Rush.

iLounge has a preview of Bomberman here. (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/review/hudson-software-company-bomberman/)

If I had an iPod capable of playing games, I'd be all over this. I've been a huge fan of Sonic since the beginning. Unfortunately, all the recent games suck. It's nice to see SEGA bustin' out the oldies.

Anyone opened this game up and taken a look at the music? All the background music is 10 minutes long!

That's....ya know..illegal and all.
Just to add to prior commentary here, there's a DMCA exemption for emulating video game systems that are no longer being manufactured. It's basically legal if you own the game.

Can we expect to start getting games for the iPod Touch once the SDK is released? Is that the only reason why it seems to be excluded right now?
Yes, you can't develop for the iPod Touch without the SDK, which apparently isn't done yet. I've heard (from someone that worked on an... accessory) that Apple may not allow commercial sales of the games until a later date, however, which is believed to be late next year.

No. It isn't.

Anyway, this game was released recently on GBA, Wii and xbox360, so it is still available to buy.

So if I say "Yes, it is!" that's a valid argument? Atleast provide some logic, please.

This is true, although it doesn't change the fact that the original versions are no longer playable without original hardware.

And anyway, I made the mistake of buying the GBA version, and the port is terrible. Absolutely terrible.

P.S. Sonic is also available for cellphones.

I love Sonic too-been playing it on my 5th gen and find it quite easy to control.

It looks like the one handed controls would really be the easiest. Why make yourself move to press the center button or use your other thumb when you can just press your one thumb down?

The controls are a little tricky - still getting used to it. But just out of curiosity, has anyone finished the game?

I didn't get to finish the game yet. There is a bug that if you roll/spin (crouching) for a certain amount of time while moving the game will crash, forcing you to replay the level. So that has screwed me up a few times... but! I'll keep trying. :p :D

I'd report it as a bug, but I don't know how one would go about doing that. Send it to Apple? or the publisher of the game... hmm
