The NY Post reports (http://www.nypost.com/seven/12192007/news/regionalnews/apple_of_upper_w__sides_eye_796388.htm) that Apple will be building yet another Apple store in New York City on the northwest corner of Broadway and 67th Street.
Sources say Apple plans to put up a new building - which has architecture-buffs wondering if one of Apple's trademark glass designs is on the drawing board.
Apple recently opened up a new NYC Apple store on West 14th street (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/12/07/west-14th-street-store-opening-tonight/) on December 7th.

We are incredibly spoiled here in NYC. I can't wait until people start moaning that they don't have a single Apple Store yet while we are rumored to get a fourth...

The Cupertino-based company is also rumored to be looking into yet another flagship location on West 34th Street, directly across from the Empire State Building.

Now how do you figure that? NYC has over 25 million people crammed into this little plot of land. Perhaps why there's a Starbucks every other block here. It kind of makes sense that they would want to expand more in NYC, hell it's almost a 2 hour wait to buy something in the SOHO Apple store at times.

NYC has between 8-9 million people in all its 5 boroughs (counties). The greater metropolitan area has about 20 million.
That said, Apple stores here are jammed. Apple wouldn't be opening stores without doing extensive demographics. They go where the money is.

That's a perfect location, actually! I live downtown, but I'm always going to the AMC/IMAX theatre (which is going to be across the street from this Apple store), and then going to have Chinese food at Ollies. Usually Barnes & Noble is a stop too, and I USED to also go to Tower Records while I was up there. Now that Tower's gone, the Apple Store will be my new destination... :D

Maybe New York is trying to catch up with Los Angeles, but we've got too much of a headstart. We've got so many Apple Stores here that merely posting a list of them would overwhelm all available Internet bandwidth.
But New York could go for quality instead of quantity.

Yes, each of our stores is special in its own way. From the glass cube on 5th Ave to the new store in the meatpacking district massive glass staircase and three floors.

Wait, what? If you pay by credit card at SoHo you never have to wait in line, they have all those people just milling about with the credit scanners. As far as busy goes, it's no worse than anything else in NY.
BUT, I can see adding another NY store, just not in Manhattan, it's overkill; why not put one in Brooklyn? It's cheaper, becoming more trendy/fashionable, and there isn't one there yet.
PS. The Starbucks aren't the problem, it's all the damn bank branches taking up space.

Yeah a Brooklyn store would be cool and Brooklyn deserves one but... Manhattan is where everyone goes when they go to NYC. Thus theyre building where the money is

I love Manhattan.
BUT, I agree... western Canada needs an Apple Store. I say Vancouver first for all the film-bots, and then quickly followed by Calgary since a) that's where I am and b) that's where the highest disposable income in Canada is located. It's a completely materialistic city and thus, we need an Apple store to add to our material possesions ;)

Apple has barely scratched the surface on New York and Long Island stores. There are only 2 on Long Island. LI could easily support several more. Brooklyn could certainly support one as could Queens (has the mall with the highest dollars per square foot sales in the US).

people who are claiming that their are too many stores probably don't live here...when your local store looks like 5th avenue does anytime during the day, u can start complaining. There are lines there at 2 am sometimes!
also, that neighborhood is awesome. My girlfriend use to work in that VS...beautiful location.

I hate going to that store. Its such a nuissance because you can never get to use any of the machines since everyone who doesn't have a mac is using photobooth. At least the ones in NY people dont spend more then 5 minutes on a computer because someone is always breathing down their necks to get off of the machine. We need to have an apple store in larchmont, so i can just walk and get an iPod.

[QUOTE=beaker68;4635595]That's nice, but where is the one for us Canadian's I'm in Alberta. Sure the few we have up here are way to far to drive too.
Well, I'm in the North East of Germany with the nearest apple store 280 km away. Luckily, my local electronics retailer just started carrying Macs with a huge full-page ad of iMacs configured with 2GB Ram, 1333 MHz FSB, 360 GB Hard drive. Now I know what you're thinking...those aren't the right specs. So, I went in to check. Sure enough, the plaque next to the iMac had different specs: 1GB Ram, 8MB L2 Cache, 1066 MHz FSB. I know, you're still thinking...that's not quite right either. So, one click on "About this Mac" solved the riddle. These quacks don't know what product they're selling. I pointed this out diplomatically to one of the salesmen, who happens to be a student of mine. He went duly red in the face.
So, all you with a real Apple Store anywhere near you...be thankful!!

Yea, I wouldn't mind seeing them spread about a bit more. Brooklyn does sound like a good idea.
And if you've ever had to search for an ATM there can never be too many bank branches.

Yes, but with how horrendous our exchange rate is, you could buy a plane ticket to NY, do your shopping, and fly back for less than I spend on a typical trip to the Apple store.

I work on the same block that the NY Post said the new apple store was to appear and I think they've got it wrong. The location the Post cited is currently a Victoria's Secret store where there is no construction going on at all. Maybe this is because they haven't decided to proceed with the plans, but if Apple is building a store for the Upper West Side, it's bound to be at 66th and Broadway on the north-west corner.
This location used to be a Tower Records, and is currently under construction without any indication of what it will become. While passing by today, a door was left open to reveal a very Apple-esque space. A large, open floorplan with a stairway towards the entrance which might lead to something like the 5th avenue store. It just seemed right. Maybe the space is too large for an Apple store, but they could be dividing the space up. I guess we'll know in the next six months if I'm right or wrong.

From a article:
The location on the northwest corner of West 67th Street hosts the current Victoria's Secret store at 1981 Broadway, which Apple is planning to tear down and entirely rebuild.
Im sure it takes a bit, especially in NYC to get permits etc to start tearing down a building...

My first thought was that they got it wrong too, and that they meant the former Tower Record space. But that space is a lot uglier than where Victoria's Secret is now. You know Apple can only be in a pretty place... :D

Its actually going to be a Circuit City, due to the Best Buy that opened a few blocks away. And also, my store is going to be sharing the same back loading space.

Yes, there's still very cheap real estate in Bushwick lol!
And while lamenting over all the Starbucks and bank branches, we shouldn't forget the Duane Reade's on every other corner!
But, I'm just so happy with that there will be four stores in the city - some open 24 hours! And also Tekserve. Good place to be a MAC devotee.
