PS3: How can I use my external USB hard drive

IS there a way I can run movies or transfer the movies from my usb hard drive to watch on the ps3? im exciting about the dvix addition.

Just plug it in, make sure its in FAT32 format as the PS3 cannot read NTFS or HFS file formats.

the key part is the folders

create a new folder and name the first folder "Photo". Do this for "Music", "Video" and "Game". When you are finished, you should have 4 folders total in the hard drive. Each folder should (at this point) be empty.

load all the music you want into your music folder, all the video you want into your video folder, and all the photos you want into your photo folder. Your game folder should still be empty.

I followed those instructions... No Luck yet

Formated in Disk Utility (80GB),
How do you know if the PS3 recognizes the HD? I saw no notification, plus the Music and Video tabs stayed the same (i added music and video, mp3 and divx)

Hmm...If you formatted it with Disk Utility, you might have a GUID setup instead of MBR...

I have no idea if the PS3 would recognize GUID.

That might be it right there....try formatting it on a PC.

If you look under your music/movies/photo option you'll see the drive pop up.

I think it actually maxes out at 132 GB.

But Windows has a limitation. From MS's web site:
• You cannot format a volume larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size using the FAT32 file system during the Windows XP installation process. Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool during Setup. If you need to format a volume that is larger than 32 GB, use the NTFS file system to format it. Another option is to start from a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup disk and use the Format tool included on the disk.

XP can read bigger FAT32 drives, but Setup can't create a FAT32 install larger than 32 GB. You can probably do it from within Windows after install though.
