Is there any way to stop DVD player opening when a DVD is inserted into the drive, only manually open it when it's required, i think i'm missing something through tiredness? 😕

it's a pain in the butt opening each time a dvd is inserted 😡

Yes. You can control what happens when you insert a disk by going to System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
