Humor me, if you would.
Pick up your D80.
Very lightly, shake it.
Do you hear a not-too-loud but obviously present rattling coming from inside the body? Is that just the shutter?

I think your theory of it being the shutter is a decent bet. Mine makes noise too. I wouldn't be concerned.

I shook mine and heard a very faint rattle. I wouldn't worry about it.

My Canon Rebel XT does this. My Canon 5D does not, however.

the rattling noise should be the orientation sensor

It's just the little ball bearing in there - the one used to help make sure the colors stay mixed up.

One more question for those still reading this thread -
The manual focus ring on the kit lens (Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G) doesn't operate particularly smoothly. As in, it always clicks a teeny bit, and every now and then it kind of gets caught, and needs a bit of extra force to keep going. I know they're different lenses, but none of this happens on my 70-200mm f/2.8 (which is an absolute beast - holy moly).
Does anyone else have this problem with the 18-135, or any other lens?

Oh...
Yes, I know that the manual focus is supposed to have a soft <stop> at the end of each spectrum - however, it feels like it's barely even there. I hope I haven't been too harsh with it.
