I got the orange box for christmas.
I have a pre-leopard macbook white 2.16ghz 1gb ram intel gma 950.
Can I run team fortress 2 or portal on it.
I tried it and it says "hl2.exe" is crashing.
is it the problem with the GMA?
I am using bootcamp 1.3b

Probably not. I could not run HL2 on my Macbook via bootcamp.

Portal is part of the Orange Box and is reportedly limited by the GMA graphics card. And since all the games use the same engine AFAIK, you may run into some trouble.

I'm trying to figure this out still. I've heard reports of people running Portal fine on the GMA950 and I know HL2 runs on a MacBook, but I keep seeing people having trouble with Portal on the MacBook- HERE. Even googling for "Portal on MacBook" brings me to the thread on MR. We seem to have the most trouble :)
What was the verdict?

I know many people report sucess with team fortress 2 on macbook with crossover. I see vids on youtube with some good 30 FPS with halflife. Dunno why it crashes on bootcamp though. it is ironic.
Oh well, if it does work better on mac than it does windows... good for me :)

just DL'd portal last night and it runs ok on my laptop which has virtually the same specs as a current macbook (2gb of ram tho). I get about 20 to 30 fps. it stutters a bit when in a large room or when you're looking into a portal though. I can't tell you about TF2, because the download has about 1/2 an hour to go

I've been reading quite extensively on this.
Turns out, that the X3100 runs it at about 30-40 fps on DX level 8, and really low settings.
I really doubt the 950 can run it...well decently atleast.

TF2 caused BSOD first time. then stuttered so much i could only exit via end task. definitely going to need a gutsier gfx card. My lappie would run it perfectly if it had a gfx card (it could probably run crysis on reasonable settings)

Has anyone gotten this to work? AT ALL? Crossover, Bootcamp, Parallels, whatever. If someone can help me get it to work, then I will give you 100 imaginary dollars :). I just want to enjoy my teamfortress 2 and portal at least. Or at least get Half Life 2 to work.
If not, I guess I will have to wait a year or so. With the exception of my macbook, all the computers int he house are 2003 or older. We will probably be upgrading more. My dad is already a bit mad with his tecra, that runs REALLY slow (cough firefox and IE7, expecially IE7).
I was able to play HL2 with a playable framerate at lowest settings for like 5 mins.
Ok, this is how it crashes:
HalfLife 2: Crashes past the part when you jump out the window, when it loads part of the level
HL2ep1,ep2: Untested
Portal: Crashes before menu loads
TF2: Crashes after I click something when the menu is done loading
all the errors say that HL2.exe has stopped working

I presume you've tried running everything at DirectX 8 or 8.1, right?

On MacBook or MacMini, CrossOver is your best bet for many supported games. (less overhead than having windows).
If you have MBP, iMac or Mac Pro, bootcamp work the best.

If you have physical disk:
Insert disk, open installer, that should open up CrossOver to choose a bottle.
If you bought digital download:
There should be a link. Install a browser on your CrossOver bottle, use that browser to open the link.

there is no link. you install steam with crossover's installers (it is in the list of preconfigured packages). It will automatically install steam (as well as download it) and let you download half life as you would normally

I have steam.
I bought the orange box.
I cant use 2 disk installations with crossover, because of stupid failsafe Apple added for ejecting the disks...
it says it is still in use

as a sidenote, if you get it up and running with crossover, could you report your results? I've been thinking about getting crossover too.

Yes, you *CAN* run all of the Orange Box games on a Macbook with a GMA 950.
For all of the games, you have to use -dxlevel 90 in the launch options. This will decrease performance, but once you're in the game you can turn down all the actual Video settings, and then you should be fine.
Portal has some shading issues, but it doesn't really hinder the actual gameplay.
TF2 runs fine, around 15-20 fps.
In HL2:EP2 and Portal, when you're looking at a "broad" landscape, eg. standing in the corner of a large room and looking outward, the game will slow down significantly. Other than that, the only issue (as mentioned above) is the shading issue, in which areas lit by flashlights/other bright lights will appear much much "whiter" than they should.
Haha I asked this question at the Valve support forums, about how the GMA seems to be having problems with the shading, but if you run it with different launch options you can fix it, etc. and asked if there was a "preferred" way to run the Orange Box using a GMA 950 under Boot Camp. The response from "Bob" was that they don't support Macs. I have lost faith in Valve's tech support.
Edit: If anyone has any questions, please post them here, not in the other thread, which seems to be defunct. :)

K, I got a torrent of bootcamp 1.4b, and I wiped my windows partition (which had nothing but maplestory and steam and portala nd HL2 and TF2), reinstalled.
What drivers do I use?

If anyone has any ideas, please post 'em here! :D

Now that's still a big problem. My MBP on all high is smooth as butter.
Have you check out a driver update?

Team fortress 2 all lowest settings directx 9 I still get like 2 FPS.Make sure you turn down the resolution and all the other video options.
Also, if you enable the developer console, you can try some of the commands here to help a bit more:

i have been searching for a solution to run hl2 on my 2ghz gma950 2gb ram macbook using bootcamp 2.0
i have a fresh winxp sp3 install. i had hl2 crash on me about every 4 min of gameplay. i searched these forums and found this to help when adding this to your stard parameters of hl2
"+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1"
now i can play hl2 without crashes! <-- thx to "smash" for this one!
trouble is, i cant get the hammer editor to run stable. i cant even display the grids of the main windows. - anyone using hammer on the macbook with the 950 gma - stable?
please help.
i have only tested all this on hl2. no ep1 or ep2 or cs:s
