can i still throw random files (jpeg, avi...) onto the backup drive? or will that screw things up for time machine?

Yes, it's fine to store other data alongside Time Machine. Your best bet is to partition the drive though.

I have been wondering about that...It was the first thing I asked my local Apple Developer after WWDC.
