A BoyGeniusReport (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/12/26/apples-new-laptops-confirmed/) claims that Apple promised new laptops to bands performing at a holiday event reportedly hosted by Apple:Apple had a recent holiday event where they had artists perform (some really big names, too), and they all did it for free! Why did they perform without being paid? Apple promised to give every performer and band member once of the new laptops they are coming out with at MacWorld! That’s all, folks!
The sources of this report are questionable at best, and are not likely in a position of knowing what products are being revealed at Macworld.

What utter-utter drivel. With all the 'rumors' already getting threads on the subject why another one based on such a nonsense story.
And the article link seems broke too.

Now what kind of laptop is it now...Most likely, it's the new ultra-portable "thin" laptop that's been rumored for a couple of years. 64 gig HDD (flash) and no internal optical drive doesn't really appeal to me, but a lot of people want it and it will likely be a great addition to the category.
It might be a revamped MacBook/MacBook Pro lineup, but rumor has it the Intel chipset that supports mobile Penryn processors is delayed. Additionally, I'd question the need for revamping the laptop line. I suspect that given the pressing need for other Apple product line updates (Mac Pro, ACDs, iPhone, ultra-portable laptop, OS 10.5.2) that resources might be stretched a little thin, and especially that we've seen relatively recent upgrades (Santa Rosa, 2.6 coreDuo, LED backlighting, glossy screen).

I think we have a new noun.
Dvorak (n): A vapid story concerning technology or technology companies, often highly speculative or weakly sourced, posted for the purpose of generating traffic to the poster's website.

Sounds like cow manure and smells like it too.
Most performers would IMHO prefer a full capable laptop and can afford to buy one. I would think that they would prefer to work for cash instead of laptops.
How do you give 15% of a laptop to your agent?
Where these performers come from? A soup kitchen?

I've been following BGR for some time now, and they are pretty accurate. The sites main editor, is good friends with famous dj/music producer "Jus Blaze", who I'm pretty sure must have spinned at the party. They have hosted numerous events together, the last being the blackberry curve launch party. They have always been dead on with blackberry/handheld device rumors. Obviously it's completely different with apple, but then again, weren't we all expecting new notebooks at MW?

this is a VERY page 2 rumor. Why would Apple tell inside secrets to performers? Apple has the money to pay any performer they could ever want, so why would they change their business model for some unnamed performers and risk leaked info.
If it was some huge performer that would only play with some Apple-gear bribe, that news would have leaked. If it was a huge performer, they also can probably afford to buy this new machine when it comes out since they are not getting it till it (almost) ships anyway.

The first keystroke sometimes ignored when typing has not been fixed with the recent update for MacBooks and MacBook Pros, and Apple has now locked the huge thread about the problem on their forums. Thousands of users live with the problem. Apple will not acknowledge, nor fix this bug which has been around since the first Intel based MacBook Pros arrived.

It's after the holidays and everyone has new macs and ipods so business will be slow for Apple. The best thing they can do is to release a new product that will spark attention and get people buying again. The iphone was one of Apple's most popular gadgets because of the multi-touch and the ability for anyone to pick it up, much like a mac. Taking all this into account it makes sense for apple to come out with a new product that has to be innovative and get people excited.

yes of course they are. It is the same with the clothing brands out with the old and in with the new. That is why when people asking if they should buy a mac in November and December the answer should be no and always no. Apple and other companies always update around this time. People it is after the holidays!!! New things come along always not once in a while always apple and other companies release new things ALWAYS!!! (Just had to get it out of my system had a rough case today!)

I can't believe that Apple (as secretive as they are) would trust rappers (notorious braggarts) with a secret as important as this one. I call BS to this rumor.

I call BS only because Apple gave rappers, who usually want to get paid in cash and not toys, new computers that they could have afforded themselves. I am more than sure the laptops Apple gave them didn't even come close to covering the expenses they racked up getting them there to perform.
Or these new ultraportables are going to be pretty expensive.

I heard about this yesterday. They quoted some "rapper" that I have never heard of.
I am fairly sure we will see new notebooks, but I don't quote know about this claims. Mainly seeing about Apples secrecy internally let alone externally.

Well I can remember a keynote where the aluminum powerbooks with keyboard backlighting were released where they showed a video of some music artist/producer/engineer was saying how he loves it. Then someone switched off the light and he was stunned by the keyboard backlight.
So it's possible that someone in the music business is already test driving one of the new laptops. Maybe he's the one who caused that "Macbook Air" entry in the Adium log.
