ok so who here regrets the iPod touch and just wants an iPhone? I ordered an iPod touch after they came up in the online store. But its just there was way too much clutter in my pockets with wallet iPod and phone. I just find it soooooo much better having an all in one device. WITH a camera is awsome.
My iPhone is unlocked in australia. Its really good for taking photos of my kangaroo with!!!!!
unlocking is easy, don't bother with expensive plans, the iPhone would still be popular without visual voicemail.

well I got a mate to get an iPhone in the states when he was over there on business. So it was about usd420. So about a$500. The iPhones on ebay a way over priced. The cheapest I could find was $usd520 to get over here. I sold my 16gb touch for $250 because it had a Broken screen. So iLove iPhone

I agree with all the above, particularly the first point. I am with Vodafone and simply do not want - and actually resent - to be forced to deal with two providers for my family mobile needs. Also O2 coverage in the UK is spotty at best. In addition to the above add:
* It needs more capacity (at least 16GB, preferably more)
* It needs 3G
* It needs GPS
* It needs to handle Flash (also a Touch issue)
Add in the above and let me decide which provider I choose to go with and I'll buy a handful of the b*ggers for my me and my family. But until then (probably Version 3+ I guess) I'll happily stay with my Vodafone/Nokia 6300 and play with the iPod Touch, which is a great, great iPod.

"what's holding you back from an iPhone?"
Simple - the phone part. When the iPhone came out, I was impressed, but wished they had just left the phone out of it. A few months later, the Touch came out.
Combining a phone and anything else is just awful. Battery life is affected, and in my opinion, it's horrible to combine devices. It reminds me of those damn TVs that used to have the VCRs built in. When your VCR breaks, what do you do?
Regarding battery life - I don't want to have to cut off talking to someone because I'm worried that I won't be able to watch a movie later (or browse the web) without recharging.
It's simple:
device.merge(mediaPlayer,phone) < mediaPlayer + phone

One word, AT&T. I also have a very inexpensive good call plan with excellent call quality. If I change over to the iphone, I am looking to spend at least double what I pay now. Not an exciting prospect.

I had just signed a new contract with o2 and it would of meant I would of had to paid £269 for the phone and then £269 to change tariff and then pay £10 more per month for less calls and less texts so. But I don't use my phone additively so it doesn't matter to me.

I would love an iphone but cant afford to jump from my £5 a month payg to £35. You might say unlock it but I wouldnt do that. Besides I would still spend more browsing out and about.
Looks like I might get the touch instead and join 'the cloud'. Kind of hoping apple might put maps and mail on the touch at some point (again i understand that this can be done by jailbreaking!)

My profession as it stands now is primarily leading people into the woods on trips and so my cell phone right now needs to be something that will stand up to the elements. Plus I don't have ATT and verizon is much better in the mountains where I live.
So with that I basically already have a great phone thats water, shock, dust, etc proof with a different carrier. As much as I would love an iPhone, I don't need one. So I got an iPod Touch and now I have all the goodies of an iPhone minus the phone and thats all I need :D

Also, I think someone already mentioned this, but AT&T doesn't work in my area. You have to go with Verizon.
And I am not kidding that I would be willing to pay more money to get a device *without* a phone. That's how important getting the damn phone away from the cool media/web features is. It's like asking Nokia n800/810 fans why they didn't get a Nokia cell phone. They bought the n800/n810 *because* it doesn't have the phone.
If someone offered a media player/web browser device with built-in electric razor, I would feel the same way. I have a razor that I shave with every day that works fine.

I tend to drop my phone on occassion. I travel a lot and I've probably dropped my Blackberry about once a month. The lovely glass screen would be toast if I owned one. I'm worried enough about my itouch, but its not a device that I pull out multiple times per day.

I don't know about you guys, but after I Jailbroke my iPod touch, I thought to myself, "Boy! I'm never going to do that to an iPhone!"
Besides, yeah both devices are the same price, but the iPhone costs me $20more dollars a month! Take that over a 24-month period...$480 more dollars!
That was the deciding factor on my iPod touch factor.:o:apple:
If only Apple could create a cheaper iPhone, like around $200, maybe I would buy it.:apple:

Dec 28, 2007, 12:16 PM
I seriously considered an iPhone, but it came down to a few things...
1) AT&T - lots of bad experience with them in the past.
2) +$20 per month. No matter how to slice it, the iPhone would add $20 a month to my bills, so $480 extra over the life of the contract.
3) I also don't like the idea of draining my phone battery to watch a movie, nor do I like draining my iPod to make a call.
4) Storage. 8gb isn't quite enough for me, so I would have kept my 5G iPod and ended up with anyway. For the same price (or less, considering the touch is available at more merchants, so it's more likely to be discounted) I could get 16gb which would replace my 30gb completely. (As an aside, I'm pretty sure I could make do with 8gb, but I'd rather not).
So, I'm on the touch-train now. I'll probably look at the next generation or two of the iPhone, though. I'm likely to switch (back) to TMobile this summer, so if I can pick up either a cheap used iPhone, or a new one with some really cool features, and unlock it for $6/month internet access (that seems to be the price over at TMobile) I'll certainly consider it again.

I'm curious to see if T-mobile gets an iphone this summer. THeir customer service rep told me that was to happen when I called in recently. But, I'm not much of a believer. We'll see.
(Speaking of TMO, I got my son a TMobile Shadow phone for x-mas. Great little WinMobile phone. It seems to have a little of a battery drain going on that we're trying to figure out, but it's a solid little phone).

1. No MMS
2. No GPS (not a dealbreaker, but nice to have)
3. No 3G
4. Not great battery life
5. No group texts
6. Poor camera
7. No video recording (important to me)
8. Limited app availability
9. No payg option without hacking (why should I have to do that to get it to work the way I want)
10. Not available in Ireland
11. Ringtones
12. Recessed headphone jack issue sounds like a pain
13. Woeful bluetooth support (no file exchange, keyboards etc, just headphones)
14. No file manager
I thought about it for a while, but decided on a Nokia N95 8gb instead. It does all I could want, and more, although admittedly the interface is not as nice.

The fact that it's $70 a month for a plan that includes data. That, and the lack of 3G (yes, I know the iPhone renders pages almost as quickly as a 3G phone, but I occasionally tether my phone to my MBP, so I actually do need 3G).
Why pay $70/mo for a slower version of what I get for $30/mo?

I just don't need a phone right now. The Touch, jailbroken solves all my needs and even if I did buy one, I'd have to go through the hassle of shipping it from the States since its not sold in Canada, unlocking it and then paying the only provider of EDGE in Canada, Rogers/Fido for using the Safari browser. Rogers is the most expensive phone company for data plans IN THE WORLD. I was on yahoo.com twice on my Ericsson phone and my bill for the data alone was $12.

Sorry Apple, you have to bring this thing down in overall price before I take the jump.

I actually stood in line for 6 hours for the iPhone on June 29th and then returned it 13 days later! For almost $700 it just was not worth it...and AT&T just sucks!!!! Plus, the plans are outrageous. I have T-Mobile, get better service, and pay a fraction of the price each month for my service plan. I do miss the iPhone, but my iPod Touch makes up for it! :)
I work for a competitor, and I get my phones and service free, so... no good reason to get one.

Same here. I hear you can buy them sim unlocked in France and Germany as per their laws. I wanted to know if I picked up one of those would it work with UK sim (but no-one answered my thread lol) I do hope they will allow it to go sim free in the UK.

Quite simply because I don't like the current model of the iPhone when compared to the touch it feels clunky and the springboard looks messy. I'll wait for the next gen one.

I agree with just about everything said already. I had AT&T before and was really unhappy with the service. I was much younger and more irresponsible and I broke my contract owing them quite a bit of money. So it would cost me as much as the iphone itself just to get going, plus the monthly bill. I'm really happy with Verizon, and would have to break my contract with them.
I drop my cell almost every time I use it, and I couldn't imagine seeing an iphone suffer through the abusive relationships my cell phones have had to endure!
finally, I need 16 gigs. My music/video library is way to big to funnel down to 8gigs. 16 is just about perfect!
A jailbroken touch is just about the most amazing tech gizmo I have ever seen. I'm excited to see what apps the SDK release is going to bring. But unless theyu are quite significant, I'm more than content with my 1.1.1 jailbroken work of art!

Isn't choice is what Apple is all about, anyway?

With AT&T I'd have to go outside to make a call. With T-Mobile I get a full signal in the basement.
Also, I don't talk on the phone enough or want cellular data enough to pay for anything beyond my simple pre-paid phone.

a lot of people state AT&T as a reason. Are we talking the plan choice offered? Reception? I find it hard to believe that the reception for SO many people is THAT bad. I had AT&T/Cingular about 4 years ago for quite some time, and had ZERO reception problems in the Chicago area. It just seems kind of odd that so many people would bag on them for that. And, all of my customer service issues with them were always handled promptly. I guess it's different strokes for different folks, eh?
