Just talked to my boyfriend the AppleTech - all the AppleCare employees and most Apple employees should be getting their pre-release copies of Mac OS X Panther tomorrow. After he's installed it on his computers, he's sending it to me. I'll post an update tomorrow on whether he gets it or not, and THOROUGH updates when I have it installed. :D:D:D I can't wait!!

While I'd love to answer "Yes", I can't really say yes or no because I haven't tried it. I'm looking forward to getting it though! (Student discount here we come :))

God I love the debates over the Gold Master build numbers. For the record, I do believe it is the GM.

Another slow news day???

Maybe the Gold Master will be 7B85a...

(minutia rules the poll again; not that I have any better ideas...)

I wonder where this topic came from ;)

Alot of people think its fake because the versionnumber.plist file has an edit date which is the exact same as the 7B80 build. But one thing that makes me still feel its final is that the kernal compile date is different to that of 7B80. Now not unless someone had the source code (which is impossible) that can't be changed.

I believe its a GM, thats not to say they might not make changes and release another GM build.

I've heard whispers of Panther 7B90 around.

i want to say yes, because i just got a 15 dollar discount that expires oct. 31th, so i'm hoping they release panther soon... i don't really care what the build number is, i just want panther!!!!!!!!

I'm a sucker for believing the rumor mill. I believe it is, Jobs is God, and Powerbook G5s are coming tomorrow. ;)

No, I'm kidding, I think 85 was the last leaked pre-release and that the actual Gold Master was most likely 87 or so that was only released internally.

.... the quality of these polls were on the up, the only thing to make this vaguely interesting would be to bet a significant amount of money on the outcome.

maybe if I rolled my tongue while placing an order for panther would help me appreciate the subtlety of this discussion.

maybe.

(edit:put the u in tongUe if yer interested)

I have absolutely no opinion but that given to me by macrumors. And in macrumors I trust, so I think yes, yes it is gold master. And the longer my new PB12" takes, the more I think it might come with panther installed.

Kettle: nice strapping young lad quote. I only know one of the three though.

My opinion is that Apple will internally release even more Panther builds, perhaps beyond 7B90, before declaring the GM release. However, I also believe that the GM build is coming very soon (but we may not know about it).

it would be interesting to see how "accurate" macrumors' readers are when it comes to predicting the validity of rumors.

i mean, i wonder, if someone were to go back through the polls, how often the results of the polls correlates to what actually came to pass.

my suspicion is that they are quite accurate.

Personally I don't think it's gold master, especially with the number of copies flying around. Personally I think this is a decoy (since ADC don't have access to these builds), and I think apple will release another build before it goes GM.

Then again, what do I know ^_^

Considering the number of 'yes' votes, there are a lot more developers reading this site than I thought ;)

I wouldn't count on it. I've seen cases where the build of Mac OS X in GM is identical to an older build number. The GM build was much more stable than the earlier one even though the build numbers were the same on 4K78.

I would be shocked if Panther is released before Oct. 26th, when MS shows Longhorn at their PDC.

who knows?

But it sure runs well on my iBook 500 (it's given it new life).

Seems stable. I haven't run into any bugs but then again I just installed it yesterday (on a secondary volume) and haven't tried all my regular programs or external hardware on it.

Yes, it's very near.

I am ... hmmm ... 98% sure 7B85 is GM and actually is in 'the making' or better replication. Why? Don't ask.
Don't blame me if a revised decision has been made be Apple though.

I voted yes, because my hope is for it to be true. Would like to see Panther released on October 24th. The release party would probably begin at 9:30 or 10:30pm!

I really can't believe the majority thinks a released build of Panther is the GM!! Who in their right mind would think that Apple would let the GM out like that?!?!! It just doesn't happen!!! They have the sickest security when releasing new hardware at shows and have kept a tight wrap on their software development. Save when the G5 specs were posted a few days before WWDC.

Apple would never distribute a GM to anywhere but internally. Why would they risk losing a TON of Panther purchases?

one more thing: Does everyone know that 7B85 is floating around? I do have it installed, and I can say honestly, they are not finished yet.

Hey, Half Life 2 was stolen so that doesn't count..

As for the XP, how did you get it? Did you know someone who worked at Microsoft?

You gotta understand, if I have 7B85, and it was EASY for me to get it, then it can't be the GM because Apple wouldn't allow it to be that easy.

And also... if it actually IS the GM, what if Apple sees that 7B85 has gone around the block a few times and has stopped the build before going to press? 7B90 or 95 or even 99 could be more of a reality. Maybe even those 7Cxx builds. If Apple were smart, they would have left out a few cool details for those 7Bxx builds and stopped sending out previews and continued development internally to work on the Big Kahuna. You feel me? ;)

I feel you, but leaks happen in the software industry. Windows XP Pro got leaked long before it came out, same w/ Office XP Pro. I'm sure the GM of Jaguar was out before the launch as well. Its getting close to the supposive launch time of Panther, so it very well could be GM. I'm currently running it now, and I have no complaints :p

Is the timing still possible for an October 24th release? Or what is the lastest thinking on a possible release date?
