View Full Version : OH god, i'm addicted!!

I have come to the conclusion that i am addicted to Apple products. I am a recent convert, in my first Apple product was my MBP last year, and since then i've bought an iPhone. Just today i seriously considered buying an old Powerbook just for the heck of it. I was looking on eBay and all that stuff trying to find out how much they would be and if it would be worth it. I've got a 15 inch MBP, and i was thinking, do you all believe that a 12 inch powerbook would be a good investment?? you can find them on eBay for really cheap, and it would be a cool little computer to carry around for typing and such.

Or should i do the respectable college student thing and save my money and hope i can afford the new Mac Pro when it comes out?

Or maybe a while after it comes out.

lol

I'm in the same boat. Bought a PowerBook G4 about 6 months ago to try out Apple computing. Since then, got a iphone, upgraded to a MBP and I'm also looking for a older MacBook just for fun...under the guise of letting my 9yr old learn some mac stuff.

Strange addiction.

One could say that it is almost like drugs, where we must spend a lot of money, however we are fortunate in that we don't have the after effect of death or imprisonment.

As an unmarried college student you don't have the problem of sneaking your mac goodies in the door without your wife seeing and asking, what did you get now!!!!!!!

I got an ipod about a year and a half ago, had a problem with it, I pulled out the ipod before ejecting it. I didn't know what to do. So I called the apple store talked to a real person and was immediately told how to fix it without proof of purchase or anything, just a phone call. I was a longtime pc guy and when my dell desktop broke I went looking for a new computer. Walked into an apple store and walked out with a macbook, a year later now I have a 17" imac and a 15" macbook pro. And am getting an iphone soon (not soon enough:(). I bought an apple t.v and am trying to learn applescript. Can one stop loving :apple:? Hell nah.

OMG I've always wanted one of those! To add to my iMac G3, iMac 24" 2.8GHz, iBook G4, and at least ten iPod's and counting. If Apple made a mattress I'd sleep on it.

I was the first amongst my group of friends to "go Mac". Everybody said I was nuts, Mac's are weird, etc etc etc. Well now four years later most of those friends are ALSO Mac owners, and most of them have multiple systems too. Most of them can't believe they put up with PC crap for so long. In fact going back along the "Mac family tree" I am directly responsible for at least two dozen Mac sales in my town, since I got mine. :apple:

I got back into Apple for almost the same reason(s). Got my GF an iPod - and for the first time, realized why EVERYONE was getting them. Blown away at the ease of use / UI and "feel" of it.

Few months later, my Dell died at a VERY bad time. Walked into an Apple store (hoping to find a new HD for my craptop) they were the only place still open.

Walked out with a 20" Intel iMac.

now have a 24" imac, iPhone, and a bunch of other little apple goodies. (docks and what not)

Both of my sisters now want Apples too.

I need to get more of that cream....

I can't give any away, I just built my collection. I have a minimum of one G3 iMac in each room of my house which I do use. I'm really not into the museum look for my Macs, I like them spaced out. Gotta love :apple:

It's my mom's fault. She was an art teacher and would bring home her old macs.

Had IIsi, Quadra, bondi Blue iMac, Indigo iMac, and my current Al. iMac. I swear there was one before the IIsi but I was too young to know.

All of them still work except for the bondi blue iMac as the CRT died about 7 years ago. We gave away the IIsi a while ago to charity.

Talk about reliable machines. I haven't had a problem with the indigo iMac and it was used heavily for 7 years. It's my mom's machine now. I think we put our mac repair man out of business. No more norton utilities. :D

i wish my mbp was that reliable :)
i have a 3 1/2 month old macbook pro
first, the keyboard and tackpad died
then isight stopped working (loose connection, not yet bothered to get fixed)
and now the case has started electrocuting me

but id rather live with that than go back to pcs
for example, i have a vista desktop. i turned it on, and logged on
just after i had logged on and waiting for it to load, i turned on my mac
the mac loaded, i logged on and was using safari before the vista pc had even finished loading my user account!!!

shutting down is even worse, i can shutdown and startup my Al-imac24 into Leopard in the same time, the same machine running bootcamp takes to shutdown from XP.

as to the actual topic in hand, im in the same boat as everyone else, the insiduous Apple technology just seems to proliferate like a *gasp* virus. I mean 4 years ago, i had 4 Wintel machines... and a very nice lady whom I shall forever be grateful gave me a brand new iBook as she was such an advocate of Apple.

Now I own that original iBook G4, a MacBook, a 24" Al-iMac, and iPod 3G, and an iPhone. So there's only one Wintel machine in the house belonging to my nearest and dearest and she loves the iMac so much it's only a matter of time before that gets replaced.

To me there is no contest.

Most of them can't believe they put up with PC crap for so long
This about sums it up for me, anyone who approaches a Mac with an open mind, just gets it once the overwhelming urge to do things the Microshaft way is overcome (perhaps I should coin a phrase here, Microshaft-Apple Switchover Inertia (tm)). Once the hard part of un-learning the MS-isms is overingrained after years of futile clicking and waiting is achieved and the Apple koolaid is drunk, there's no turning back.

In my experience, switchers seem to realise how much of their life was spent just nurse maiding windows systems and not getting work/play things done. My macs have more than repaid their costs in terms of hours not being spent fixing the windows systems they replaced. Even the iPhone has made my life so much easier, and the best is still yet to come from Apple on that front.

Namaste Steve.

I've been a huge fan of Apple products for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, I have not owned Macs for long.

I bought my first Mac about 6 years ago (I'm currently 23), and it was a G3 400MHz Blue iMac, but sold it quite soon after becuase I didn't feel it was for me. I'd still always had this burning desire to buy another mac.

Then about 2 years ago (just as the intel iMac's came out), I bought a G5 20" iMac and loved it. I couldn't believe how much better they are than I ever expected. Unfortunately, I had to sell it again because I was offered a place at university on an IT degree so needed a PC.

I bought a G4 Powerbook last summer and again, loved it and used it none stop (til my girlfriend started drooling over it and pinched it) and, then she had an accident with it before christmas and my insurance company have today replaced it with a 2.2GHz MBP.

In addition, I own a silver 80GB iPod Classic and a 16GB iPod Touch.

I'm also waiting anxiously to see what's released at MacWorld and if any significant changes are made to the MBP, I will be selling my new one and buying the updated model. I am also looking to replace my Windoze PC with a mac desktop (but can't decide between an iMac or a Mac Pro)

Apple products are so addictive, purely because they are so well made, well designed, and SO SEXY!

I'm a high school student that has been blessed with apple products since I was 3 years old. Here's what my family and I had from when I was 3 on:

--macintosh ll
--macintosh classic
--powerbook 100
--Macintosh Quadra 800
--Power Macintosh 7600
--(2) PowerBook g3 Series (rev. 2) -- I believe this was called the wallstreet edition
--(2) imac g3's
--powermac g3
--(3) powermac g4's (my first computer that I could call my own :))
--Sold mine to get the quicksilver g4, dad sold his g4 and his wallstreet to get a powerbook g4 1.33 GHz and a 1G ipod
--Dad sold his stuff to get a 1.67 GHz powerbook g4 w/ an ipod photo, then a 5G ipod. Sold those to finally get a 2.33 GHz mbp c2d and a 160GB ipod classic.
--Sold my comp to get a nice toy to play with -- a compaq presario
--Quickly sold that off, went without a comp for a bit, then finally raised enough cash a little over a year ago from my after-school job to buy a 2.16 mbp c2d and a 5.5G 30GB ipod, which is my current setup, and what I expect to be my setup for another 3 years or so (until they release the 3G iphone, that is ).

How's that for an :apple: love story? :D

My problem is, I don't like keeping my computers for that long. I usually keep them for a year and then sell them and replace them (although, I have had my Windoze PC for over a year now and just upgraded a few parts).

My aim for the next few months is to find a desktop that I can keep for years and use as my main system for most of it's time and then maybe 3 years down the road, buy a replacement and use the 3yr old desktop as a spare or as a server

I have worked on PC's since I was about 9 or 10, and by work. I mean I helped my Dad build them. He trained me to become a PC programer just like him. He was so proud the day I wrote my first C program. So needless to say he cried a little the day I came home with my macbook pro. To see us sitting there, it was hard for him. I know in time he will adjust though. I am his son after all, and hell give me a year and I will have him and my mom working on an iMac.

All i can say is, I have never found a company that puts so much thought into a product. If you want to read a good book about this devotion, read Options by Fake Steve Jobs. It chronicles some of the intensive devotion that went into the creation of the greatest thing that has ever come earth, the iPhone. (No really, that book is hilarious and a must read for any mac fan)

Like many other people, the iPod was my first encounter with Apple. My friend had a 3rd gen one and I was jealous beyond words. I remember the sheer amazement at just how nice the packaging was when I got my very own one. After using the iPod (a G5) I started to surf eBay for an old iMac G3. I had that for about 6 weeks but with the lack of easy availability of an AirPort card it was soon sent to relatives for a better home
At the start of this year I bought a 1.42GHz eMac from eBay again and was amazed at how much better it was than the G3. It was like a G3 Snow (which I loved the look of) on steroids.
In the November of this year got my first *new* Mac, a SR MacBook; and I love it. It is easily the best and most powerful computer I've ever used. And for Christmas I recieved an 8GB iPod touch. So for now my Apple set is complete and if I could only shift this eMac I could put the money toward an iBook or Mac mini to replace it as the torrent box, which, if any of you have an old computer lying around, is fabulous to have ;)

Huh? You may be able to use it for typing, however it's an old, out of date and discontinued product, why would it be a good investment?

I just bought a Motorolla cell phone and really like it! Do you think one of those '80's era bag phones would be a good investment for when I don't want to mess up my new phone?

However, if you are a collector then all bets are off.

silbeej asked a valid question. Just because she/he owns a newer tech laptop doesn't render the 12" obsolete, far from it. They are very nice small portable machines that can be used for lightweight anything and if he/she has the needs for something smaller to use when on the long road, then it might be a good investment.

Right now I'm on my 2001 iBook 500MHz G3 running 10.4.11, you'd be surprised how much more it does other than typing!

Indeed, unlike Windows OS updates, the newer version of OS X (as long as your machine is supported) can run it pretty well.

i remember I never liked macs, until i got my first black macbook to try it out. after about 4 months with that I loved it way more than windows computers, other than the games, or shall i say the lack of games. so I got a macbook pro and an iphone. i want my house to look like an apple store.

Yeah, I bought my MBP when my last laptop died and I was hooked. Previously I had been so anti-Apple for most of my life until I thought, on a whim, that I liked the MBP if for nothing else looks. Also the fact that if I didn't like OS X I could just format the drive and boot into windows.

Well needless to say I haven't ever even tried to load windows on my MBP and now I want to get an iPhone(but i'm locked into another year with verizon(whom I like and would like to stay with *prays for verizon based iPhone*)) and a Mac Pro. But my wife threatened me with her leaving to go back to Japan as soon as she could if I bought it. Tempted still I am, though. hahaha, yeah thats how bad I want to switch. All I need windows for is games and the new MP with an 8800GT is far and away more power than I need(even the quad core single chipped one). All of my photo software is for OS X now.

If they would release a machine that wasn't a workstation but closer to the MP than an iMac(something I would never be able to buy for myself, my wife on the other hand would probably love it) then I would be happy.

Computers in general for me is an addiction.

Like today, my brother scored me for free a Powermac G4 400 MHz Sawtooth, with the matching 17" Studio Display, keyboard, and mouse.

Gonna dump a bunch of RAM in it, flash a GeForce 4 MX card I have lying around, and install Tiger.

Or maybe a while after it comes out.

lol

it entirely depends on what you are using your mac for. not everyone needs mac pro. for a college student (unless your major is graphic design), even a macbook would be sufficient.

One could say that it is almost like drugs, where we must spend a lot of money, however we are fortunate in that we don't have the after effect of death or imprisonment.
Except when you can't pay back your debts.

As an unmarried college student you don't have the problem of sneaking your mac goodies in the door without your wife seeing and asking, what did you get now!!!!!!!

I haven't tried to sneak in a iphone just yet because I know he'd eventually notice and would not be happy with the contract. :)

Anyway, there are far worse things than being a MacHead...We just plot how to get hardware past our spouses without them noticing, or seeing the bills. :)
Some people have far worse agendas.

Ariel

P.S....on the debt thing...I had to REALLY REALLY cool it with the spending. This is why I'm trying to get Apple to hopefully fix my MBP 1.83 that is overheating (there's a whole thread on this). I am down to only 1 credit card and I will go spend around $200-$300 on it and then I have to have it paid down all the way before I can go buy anything else. I may end up having to make an exception when it comes time to buy a new 'puter, but if I do have to do that, then the same rule will have to apply...it will have to get paid off ALL the way. :)

I still pay interest this way, but normally will pay it down in 2-3 months. I used to owe like 10K on the blasted cards and got that paid down...and never EVER will I ramp them up like that again. :) If I were super smart I'd just not buy the "toys" and i'd put that extra money onto my mortgage and get rid of that too..but alas I'm a tad weak when it comes to the Apple store.

My name is Jimmy and I'm an Apple-holic. ;)

I've become addicted to G3 iMacs. Ebay makes it so easy. And there's a dealer just outside of Orlando that makes it even easier, as I can drive down and pick them up when I win them.

My first was an iMac DV Special Edition 400Mhz DVD that I gave to my ex- during the breakup.
My second was an iMac (Early 2001) 400Mhz that I gave to my former roommate when I moved out.
My third is an iMac (Summer 2001) 600Mhz CD/RW. It is my kitchen computer and streams iTunes, hold recipes, and shopping lists.
I brought them all up to their 1GB RAM maximum. They are wonderful machines.

I've been eyeing either a G3 Clamshell iBook or maybe a G4 eMac. Decisions, decisions!

(Along with my Intel iMac, AppleTV, iPhone, etc., etc...)

Do you find that a lot of the CRT G3 iMacs are starting to get bright horizontal lines on the screen from the CRT wires? My old one is getting some more prominent lines now.

Well, luckily, the three I've had have not had that issue. Knock on wood!

For repairs on the overheating issue...I'm not entirely sure I can handle the withdrawl. I only have one. :/ Guess I could always check ebay.

Maybe I'll check out the used Mac mini's...hubby has a little Monitor "problem"
and buys a new one every year so he won't notice a missing LCD. >:-)

You wouldn't be able to afford those nifty apples...

As Mom always said, "An Apple a day keeps the doctor away!!!"

Steve Jobs must be putting crack into these machines because I just can't seem to walk away from them.:o

I let it slip yesterday to my wife that I ordered the 8 core MP. I had planned on waiting a week or two at least before telling her since I have until Feb 25-29 but it just flew out of my mouth! She had mentioned she wanted us to do this documentary.. and before I knew it I'd let the cat out of the bag.

"What? I "need" it for my business!" *Pinocchio emote*

This is my coolest find:

Like, the original owners never used it.... not a scratch on it.

Now it's in my collection, not being used... :p
