I own three, technically.
My first was an AudibleListener. I still own it and it still runs, though is now a bit rudimentary.
The second is an Audible Otis player. It plays both Audible books and MP3's, has 32MB of built-in flash and can take an SD or MMC card with another 32MB.
The third is my first-gen 5GB iPod. I love it! I thought I almost broke it today on the way to work -- it was stuck on "next song", then froze. I was so happy! Instant excuse to buy one of the new generations.
Alas, it started working again. :(

A 40 gig player (:)) or 40 players( )?
I would love to have a 20 GB iPod but for now the Kodak MC3 is the only MP3 player I use, despite having to boot-up OS 9 to change the files in it. If only iTunes for OS X supported generic MP3 players...
By the way, it uses Compact Flash cards so I can take it jogging with no problems. Are there any iPod-owning-joggers out there reading this? If so please tell us how well the iPod performs on the road.

15 GB. man i love this thing. i wish i would have known beforehand, but i hooked it up to my pc, and yeah it wiped it clean and really messed it up. and it kinda made my pc a little flaky too. so i had to completely refresh my ipod from my mac. uggh. id rather be using itunes anyways. but i was experimenting, not knowing that you cant just switch it between mac and windows.

I have a Kodak mc3, and I don't have to boot to OS 9 to change the files (thank goodness, since my 17" powerbook can't boot to 9). I use a compactflash card reader (PCMCIA), mp3 rage to change the title of the tracks, and a applescript studio app to copy the mp3 files to the MUSIC folder of the compact flash card.
Oh, and I also have a 30GB iPod now and its a lot easier to deal with. Only use the mc3 for pictures now. lol
I used to have a 10 gig iPod but it got stolen yesterday, so, no I don't.:(

Not yet. They don't make MP3 players big enough for my collection yet. I have a tad shy of 44GB of MP3's. I NEED something that can fit all my MP3's and have room to grow so in a perfect world 80GB would be great.
Whoever gets to 80GB, be it Apple, Dell, Creative, etc. They will get my business. I'm not partial to any one company when it comes to a music player. I would like an iPod but I'm not going to go nuts over it. At this point the only reason I'm leaning more to the iPod is the iTMS which will most likely be only compatible with the iPod.
*shrugs* Its a moot point right now anyways. There is nothing that can do 80GB. As they say I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
For the time being I use my Jornada and a 512MB CF card as my primary method of playing MP3's. The available options on the PPC for MP3's, OGG, WMA, WAV are numerous with one of my favorites being:
http://www.ppc4you.com/show.cgi?softid=6015
It looks and acts just like WinAMP but for the PPC. I love it.

i've had three mp3 players... i have a Creative Nomad Jukebox (6 gigs) i used that for about a year and a half, it used itunes so it was pretty cool, it just could only store mp3's and i could make echos and everything!!! :-D best firmwire... but it was the size of a cd player (a bit bigger) and had 1.5 hours of battery life and i had to charge it for about 9 hours for full charge...
my second was an Archos Jukebox 20, and i've had a ton of problems with that one. about a week after i got it, the motor for the hard drive stopped and i had to shake the living daylights out of it, it somehow reformatted itself, not letting my mac see the mp3 player when it connected, it was great kuz i could transer anything i wanted on the thing like the ipod. but i started to get to know the support people, not very nice people. they seem to think that every1 is wasting their time... it supported usb 2.0, but i don't have that so it didn't help. it supported only mp3's. fortunantly, i was able to return it from costco for $290.00 which was about the same price i payed. i had this mp3 player for about 8 months. don't buy the archos, kuz their itunes plugin doesn't work!!!!!!!!! and then u will have to do normal drag and drop giving u no playlists what so ever!!!!
My new mp3 player is an ipod 15 gig. this thing is tight, great battery life, second to the archos, super fast transfer, portable hd, can play almost any kind of music file. the firmwire is pretty good, not as cool as the creative nomad jukebox, but i love the size and weight. I still wish they came out with the black ipod :-(... but o well. i hope this mp3 player will stick with me longer than my other mp3 players combined.

it performs very well... my only "problem" is, i still cannot find a bag, holster or holder that would keep the iPod really firm on my body.
now it moves up and down while jogging...

I've used a web-belt from one of my chalk bags strapped behind me under my shirt and that seems to keep the iPod steady. Also, I bike and climb with my iPod and it's always worked great and been worth its weight.

1st generation 5Gig.
Ordered it the same day they announced it, and it's still working perfectly. I don't feel limited by the 5 Gig capacity yet, so I'll wait for the next revision before buying a new one...
I remember when I first got it ... It gave me a lot of attention.. Like when my band was rehearsing, I used to do a simple recording on my TiBook, and by the time we were walking out of the studio, I had the recordings on my iPod already!:D That impressed the hell out of my bandmates!

Yeah me too. I ordered mine on 9/10 and finally got about a week or two ago. I love it! My wife who was indifferent to it now tells me that she loves her new iPod and that I should start thinking about getting one for me! My niece who is a student and goes all the time has now fallen in love with my iPod. I think my sister is going to get her a 10 gig 3g iPod this Christmas.
OBTW, it's amazing how many of my friends don't even know WHAT an iPod is. Of course then I educate them, show them and then encourage them to buy one. :D

I have a 1st gen 5GB iPod, which I love, and I also use my Palm Zire 71 with a 256MB SD card.
I find they both have their niches... the iPod for all-day listening, and the Zire for general purpose and working out (solid state so no skipping, and can be used to keep workout logs). The only downside of the Zire is the bundled Mp3 application, Real Player, is truly basic and has some annoying quirks.
What I truly wish for is this whole convergence thing to speed up. If I could have iPod-like capacity and functionality in my Zire, that would be ideal. Throw in wireless voice and data, and I'm golden.

I'm considering one. I primarily want to use it when I'm exercising, so I'm not sure which one would best fit my needs.
I sweat a lot... so it needs to be highly water resistant or waterproof. I don't think any players fit those requirements.
Anyone know of one?

got my 30 GB 3G iPod in May... it's a beauty, i use it all the time, in between classes and in its dock in the dorm, which is hooked up to my receiver :)
i've only got about 15.5 GB of it used, though..
20GB 2nd Gen iPod, goes everywhere with me, even starting to use the calendar and clock, replacing my silly PDA.
Planing on getting my fiancee one for Christmas, of who will be my wife come this saturday, the 11th!

My smartphone is an MP3 player. Too bad I'm limited by the capacity of existing memory stick duos. 256MB is just not enough.

I voted no. As I told someone in the Apple Store, I use my walkman so I can listen to my FM Talk Station, 96.9. I use my G4 for listening to CD's.

I use my phone - a trusted Siemens SL42e, I never bothered to upgrade the initial 16Mb card, so have the songs compressed at 4kb/s mono (only one ear phone). I have about 13Mb of them - and 54 songs, keeps bus journeys peacful.

Wow, lots of Yes (Other) votes. I would have thought everyone surfing a mac-centric forum would own an iPod, it seems a little shocking to me.
I now they're expensive but I'd take a used iPod over a new other-player any day, and twice on Tuesday.

the ipod 3rd generation, with the touch sensitive controls, is really good in that area. ive used it in the rain (light rain, of course), ive got sweat on it, and it works fine. the older ones with buttons you might have more of a problem with...
and for the person that asked about how well it works jogging, it preloads about 20 minutes of audio in your playlist at once, then powers down the hard drive. this not only makes the battery last longer, but makes it really shock resistant too. it will only spin to preload maybe 5 seconds, then it powers down. even when its spinning, i'm sure that up and down jogging motion will not bother it. but after it preloads, its all solid state (like your compact flash thing) after that. of course, it is a hard drive, and if it is dropped or jarred you might have problems. but when you own an ipod, you usually take care of it like it's your child anyways. atleast i do :-) well, nevermind the rain and sweat and jogging with it thing.
and the person who asked about the holder for it, the belt clip case that comes with the 15, 3g 20, 30, and 40 gb models works really well. i think apple sells it for $19 which is too high in my opinion, but if you can find one they work great. even on normal "work out" shorts/pants.

I have a 30gb iPod. I grow more dependent on it the longer I have it. I had to go to work without it one day since I've had it and the subway was unbearable. Also, it seems as if iPod users are coming out the woodwork.. I'm seeing the trademark headphones everywhere (not to mention white knock off head phones.. those are easy to spot though :))
There is no way I'd want to own another player. The day this one gives out or gets stolen, I'm right back in line for another one.

When I talk about my ipod at school i am considered a outcast of a group of people that have lost their way.
But when i recently brought my ipod to school I am the center of attention around all my freinds.
Next I should try to get them to switch.
Hehehehe.:D :D
