Ok, So I got my macbook, and I ordered it with standard 80Gb HDD as I didt want to pay over the odds for more GB's.

Anywho, Now im thinking of upgrading the space on my laptop and my question is . . .

Where is the best (and preferably cheapest) to buy a new harddrive from (bearing in mind im UK)

What should I look out for? eg. sizes, speeds etc 🙂

Cheers

Depends on what you want, the 200GB 7200rpm, or a larger 5400rpm drive will be a good upgrade.

Make sure it's 9.5mm height.

Newb here...when the original hdd is replaced with an aftermarket one..i assume you insert the leopard install disks and follow the instructions to install the software...

I remembered reading your reply yesterday but for whatever reason [probably food related] I forgot to respond, needless to say I wasn't in the best frame of mind either what with it being the morning after the night before.

A fresh install of Leopard on the new HDD is one way of approaching this, however, I would prefer to purchase an external HDD enclosure and use Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich Software to clone the contents of your stock HDD to the new one, I think the latest version is CCC 3.0, correct me if I'm wrong.

CCC can also clone one hard drive to another, copying every single block or file to create an exact replica of your source hard drive

You can learn more about CCC as well as download it for free from here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html, CCC is a fantastic piece of software; especially when you consider it's donation-ware, so I recommend making a donation which can be done via the aformentioned link 😉

I would recommend checking websites like http://www.ebuyer.com literally 2 days ago I ordered a 250gb drive for my coreduo macbook with only a 60gb drive that I have had for over a year now. the drive at the time cost me 75 pounds which I think is a very good price. Shop around though you are always bound to find good deals.

Hard drive questions

So, I just got myself a 250 external and now after reading this post I am thinking of getting a new 250 internal for my Macbook. I have a couple of questions though...

1... How easy is it to fit the internal myself
2... Is it worth spending a little more and going for a Seagate Momentus with the shock protection thingy..

Thanks in advance

🙂

How long is a piece of string?

Apple class the MacBook HDD as user-replaceable (I think that's the correct term?) i.e. you can do it yourself, there are plenty of resources online including both photo and video tutorials, here's a nice video tutorial from those wonderful guys over at OWC which ought to give you some idea of what exactly is involved: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/macbook/macbook/med.html

Apple's own HDD replacement manual in .pdf format: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_13inch_HardDrive_DIY.pdf

Let us know how you get on.

I was in the same situation as you... my 80gb in my MB CD only had a couple hundreds of megs left so I decided to look for a hard drive. My choice went for the Hitachi 7k200 (200gb , 7200). I found one on ebay for like $180 shipped, and it included a Hitachi enclosure. All I can say is that it's fast. Really worth it.

One more thing : If you are like me, you will want to clone you hard drive so you won't lose anything. I tried Super Duper, and while the cloning was perfect, I was unable to boot with the drive. Then I tried with Carbon Copy Cloner, and it worked on the first try !

This is the brochure of the actual drive I bought.
