Not really. Every modern car senses lower grade gas and changes the engine timing. The engine will run fine, but you just probably get what- 1mpg less and slightly reduced power.

If you're car recommends premium, put premium in it. Even with the sensors, you're not going to go broke spending another $4-6 per fill to put the gas your engine was designed for especially forced induction engines as they do tend to be more picky then NA engines on what octane they are burning. Considering cars these days that use premium are sports cars and luxury vehicles, if you can afford the $50K sticker for the car, you should be able to pay for the gas.

It is indeed a Smart, but unfortunately they no longer make this model. Mine was built in 2004 shortly before they stopped making them in 2005. More info on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_Roadster).

I've never seen an Audi Q7 with more than 2 people in it.

Ok, so the reason I went for a Q7 is that I have a large family and I needed 7 seats. Also, I live in the country (as you so rightly pointed out) so 4wd is often useful and sometimes necessary. If I lived in London I would never consider such a car.

For people with larger families and children there is very little choice when it comes to cars. I'm guessing you don't have small children because if you did you would see things differently.

As others have said, it is a bit off to criticize someones choice of car without knowing the circumstances in which it was chosen.

Here's my 06:

Not a lot of mods, but hopefully more too come.
Tokico D-Spec adjustable shocks & Struts
Eibach lowering springs
C&L Racer intake and Tune
Pypes O/R H Pipe and Borla Stinger mufflers
And painted all the emblems black.
I'm a Chevy person myself, but damn that this is HOT. The Mustangs (new ones that is) keep calling my name louder and louder each day.

Nice, I love those model years for the 3 Series.

So do i! it has aged a little bit but i still love it

Very nice! I'm keen to start doing track days - how did you get started? And what kind of mods have you put on your Beemer?

the silver one which is my street car has a full custom exhaust. Cat-less headers into custom piping, projector headlights with 6k HID bulbs, clear corners, sidemarkers, LED tails, m3 auto folding mirrors, CSL carbon fiber trunk, euro camshafts, custom intake, 19" staggered CSL wheels, bmw performance short shift kit...Since that picture i've also put a new front bumper on and put an alcantara wheel out of a later model 3 series in the car.

Best way to get started is signing up for some driving schools and getting your scca or nasa license. It really depends how far you want to get into tracking your car. If you just want to do it for some weekend fun every once and awhile the drivers schools are great. You get an in-car instructor and they help you with everything. You can still do the drivers schools without instructors as well though.

What kind of car are you thinking about tracking?

Honda Civic LX 2001.
I bought it brand new in 2001, and it is still going strong. It has around 60,000km on it (~37,200 miles), so the engine is still as good as new (I am out of the country 50% of the time, and during the first couple of years I worked a few blocks from my house, so I rarely used it).
And gets great mileage as well. :D

What kind of car are you thinking about tracking?

To be honest, I really don't have the cash for a second car yet, but whatever I get will be cheap and rear wheel drive. A BMW 3-series would fit the bill quite nicely, but I've looked at MX5's (Miata/Eunos) as an alternative. To be honest, almost anything with more than the 68bhp and 110+ lb/ft of my daily driver would be great :D

Here's mine! 2008 Honda Fit Sport 5MT. I love the fuel economy (36mpg avg.!) and how fun it is to drive, but I kind of wish I got less of a clown car. Maybe should have gotten an RSX or something similar instead. Also, the build quality is definitely NOT up to par with my mom's Prius or my dad's Solara. It's not Chrysler-level, but it definitely feels flimsy.

Mods:
Tanabe GF210 springs
Progress rear sway bar
Falken Azenis RT-615 tires
15" Konig Heliums
Fujita short ram intake
Weapon*R headers

...makes 90whp...

Very nice mod list there. If I was to get one, I'd probably just do a few subtle appearance mods, an exhaust, and a short shifter.

For the record, I like the Mustang better than the truck. :p

1977 Datsun 280Z. Had if for over 4 years now and I'm itching to get a C4 Corvette, but I sure would hate to part with the Z.Keep da Z! Awesome cars... Hopefully my aunt will sell me hers in a few years... maybe when I'm out of college. Here is her pristine condition 1980 280ZX:

I miss my old Concorde...:

Nonetheless, my LHS has grown to fill her shoes:

Next car will be a 2005-2008 300C... But I will keep the LHS for a while, assuming it stays in good mechanical order.

My old 5.0 94 Mustang GT was not huge on the HP anyway, so the Mini Cooper S, thanks to the turbo and weight, matches the HP, is faster to 60 and is faster in, round, and out of corners...

No regrets what-so-ever. I still have my Mustang also...

The Camaro is in production. The LSX engine never went out of production, it only got better, the LS7 and LS9 are leaps and bounds better than any Ford Engine made for any Shelby Mustang/Ford GT. The Camaro gets the LS3 I believe.

No Ford Production Mustang/Ford GT can touch this car:

Please tell me your not comparing a $25K Mustang to a $125K Corvette ZR1? And no the Camaro isn't in production and hasn't been for about 6 years now, the new one is a 2010 model. The Camaro/Firebird were always great performing cars but way too much for what they were trying to be(The GTO comes to mind). And there going to do it again with the new Comaro, whos gonna spend 35K on a Camaro when they can get a new C6 Vette for $40K.

I hope GM learns from there mistakes and makes the Camaro more affordable because being a muscle car fan I'd like to see it stay around for awhile.

The new Mini has a five star Euro NCAP safety rating. I'm surprised that Americans still think along the lines of "it's small, so it must be unsafe".

I personally don't think it's a small car. It's at the VERY high end of the supermini market and I'd be inclined to categorise it with medium sized cars like the VW Golf and Ford Focus.

Well many consider the 'Ring one of the best ways judge a cars performance. And I consider anything that tops that list the fastest car in production. I'm sure the Aero can and will break the top speed record though, but i'm not sure it's ever been around the ring.

Oh really? It'll "only" do 205mph so it's no where near the fastest in a straight line and it's reported Nürburgring time is 7:24.4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6mEirkQN8o) which is nowhere close to the Radical SR8 (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2990770163894389660) time of 6:55. Track day on Sunday
Peugeot 205 1.9 Gti running with Jenvey Throttle bodies, DTA mappable ECU and full Michelin slicks.

http://www.trackd.co.uk/shots/car.jpg

Not that much power at around 167bhp, but weighs in at less than 850kg (1870lbs)
Keeps with much more powerful stuff on the track as it's not about straight line speed but corners where we can catch a surprising amount of higher powered stuff. Obviously slicks could be considered cheating, plus full race pads etc !!

To end all debate, the ZR1 is currently the fastest "production" vehicle around the "ring" at 7:26.4. I personally can't wait for Clarkson to get a hold of one, if it ends up being as good as testing has shown.

The ZR1 is a fast car but you have to realize its going against a "stock" GT-R. When Nissan unveils the GT-R V-Spec model, I'm sure the ZR1 will no longer be the fastest production car in the world.

GT-R compares against the Z06 as the V-Spec model will compare against the ZR-1. :)

That may be true, but for the sake of calming a few members down, the ZR1 is currently the top of the board, but the V-Spec in testing has proven to be very fast.

I use a wheelchair so I drive a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country Touring with an automatic ramp and about 12 computers in it. Enjoy!

When you turn the joy stick left and right, the steering wheel moves in those same respective directions. If you press forward on the joystick, the accelerator is pushed down, pull back and the brakes are applied.

I normally hate telling people this, but here it goes:

$30,000 just for the van
$20,000 for the ramp modifications
$70,000 for all of the computer equipment (the joystick itself is $40,000 )

And then theres the more menial costs like the tints and wheels (around $1500 total but makes the car look so much better!)

So, as you could probably guess, I won't be getting another car anytime soon! :D

By the time you're able to afford that Mustang hopefully the oil price will be so high that you Americans are finally thinking about buying reasonable cars instead of nonsense like this. I'll take 0-60 in 11 seconds any day if I'm getting 50mpg along with it. Have fun at the petrol station!

I have plenty of fun! Mustangs are also quite affordable. Reasonable to one person is different to another, man.

unclesmurf you passed up on a lot of great cars to get the mazda.

That may be so, but my insurance, gas costs, and general practicality are more important currently. Besides.. if I got a mustang I would be too tempted to mod it like my old one and thats hundreds to thousands of dollars wasted that I could spend on my work equipment (personal trainer, athlete). Granted, knowing me, im likely to pay this things off quick and get something else within a couple years.

Besides... the long term cost of the BMW would not be worth it ( I used to work for BMW), the lancer has some great features but I hated the ricer looking wing, just so friggin ugly. I really wanted the Mustang but I did not want to stretch the long term costs and especially the insurance.

Rich teenager? Mustangs are not Bentleys. I see tons of teenagers driving around here with the new Mustangs. They're fantastic first cars at a fantastic price.

It's an affordable teenager's sports car, it always has been. Why do you think the Mustang has survived for so long? Did the Mustang go away for years like the Camaro and Charger and Challenger? No. Why? It's affordable. I had multiple friends who had new Mustangs when they were 16/17. It has nothing to do with being rich.

Congrats on the Pony, MicBook.

Got the Rancho quicklift installed with the new Rancho shocks installed, and a set of BFG ATs

QuickTrip kindly fed my baby fuel with half water in it, shut down my fuel system and ruined my fuel sensors. $1,000 of repairs. I'm going to make them pay that bill.

wheels524, that's a really awesome computer setup in there. You should put some smoke machines by the door so when the ramp goes down the smoke kicks up and all witnesses to the scene will hear the Darth Vader theme playing as you descend.

I get about 22mpg in a mix of driving, but can get up to 30mpg on the highway if i stay at 60-65mph.. 35-40mpg if I stay behind a tractor trailer ;)

But the rated mileage is only a couple mpg better than the V8.

LOL no offense, but I smell delusion! :D

According to ebay, they're upwards of $20k new, & the insurance company I'm with wouldn't insure a teenager with one as they won't insure anyone under 25 with anything 2 doors & more than 2000cc, giving it a score of zero for both affordability & insurability IMO.

My first car (2 yrs ago when I was 15) was an '89 Civic, my current & 3rd car is a '99 Toyota Corolla (I'll try to get some pics).

That Mustang looks like the V-6 model. Yes, we Americans can sometime go for the looks and fuel saving models and still look bad ass, Neiltc13. But I am 17 and I know Geico would insure me, if I am willing to pay. My 97 Acura TL 3.2L costs me $108 a month, very cheap for my age. I am sure the price would be out of most teenagers price rage, after payments and insurance for the Mustang (Unless daddy payed for it). Also Full Coverage cost allot more.... I just have basic....

Ok to settle some things

Yes it is the V6 Mustang

No I am not rich

Yes my parents helped pay for the car (it was just a tick over $20K)

To insure the Mustang was just $50 more per year than a Civic so I got what I really wanted

And I can say it is pretty good on gas too I'd say I'm getting around 35mpg on the highway

BTW I use USAA though so big discounts.

with all the gas prices though....you may "really" want to sit down and think and make sure you want to buy a big engine truck. It used to cost me $400/month in gas alone to run that hemi back and forth to work alone. just an FYI.

Hmm, thanks good to know. My stepdad just bought a 2008 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 Laramie with a Hemi. It has a 3.92 rear end, and is pulling truck for a 1500. But it does drink allot of gas. He got a good deal on it due to gas prices. But I don't like to borrow his truck all the time.

Here are my reasons for a truck:
*4 doors, I have to take my little brother and sister to and from school. Since my parents are at work during those times. Plus when ever I run into town, my older brother and his g/f ride in my car. So 4 doors is a must.
*I am into nature photography, so a 4x4 comes in really useful. I normally just drive down the truck trails and get out and ride my trail bike where the truck will not go.
*I like to camp, so yet again 4x4 is useful. One day I would like to get one of those bed tents.
*A truck is very handy, I like to build stuff. So I have a place to put wood, plants, and other stuff in the bed.
*Those occasional trailer and when I move I will probably pick up a cheap boat. I love to fish....
*I am 5' 11" almost 6'. So I find some cars really cramped.

Reasons why I want a car:
*There cheaper to buy, and can be a bit more luxuries.
*I love german cars, like the VW Jeta and BMW 3 series.
*Slight better gas. I say slight because even though I live out of the city, it's still the suburbs and has allot of stop and go traffic. I average about 15 MPg and my stepdads old Tahoe. The cars I have looked at get about 18-19 and need premium.
*I am in love with diesel motors. The amount of power you can get out of them and how durable they are. The fact I can dump propane, jet fuel, kerosene, cooking oil, and who knows what else. They are tough little monsters. This is why I am looking at the new Jeta TDI, also truck's with diesels cost allot of money.

I don't really care if it's new or used. I know what I can afford and I plain to stick below that. I would like new, but if that can't be have. I will stick with something with low miles.

Currently I am looking at:
2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Max 4x4 Extended Cab. It has 25,489 miles on the odometer. It's a black beauty, with grey leather interior. The truck is an LT3 with all the options, looks and drives really nice.

2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Z71 4x4 with 26,946 on the odometer. This truck is a very nice silver with an leather interior. This truck is also fully loaded and drives like a dream. It also does not have all that plastic crap like the other Avalanches.

I am looking at many others, but those are the ones that are standing out. I am thinking about getting new because at the moment you can get a really good deal on a full size truck. My stepdad drove his dodge off the lot $12,000 below sticker price.

IDK, there is many things I have to think off before I get a new vehicle. More then likely I will wait a few more months and save up some more. To lower my payments.

But yea, what makes it so hard to me to find a vehicle is... The gay part of me wants a luxury car and the manly part of me wants a truck.

that's cool man. You may want to check into the crossover market then. Doesn't sound like you totally need a truck. I'm from Texas where trucks are all you see so i've always owned a truck. I've been driving for 10 years now and this isthe first time i've ever owned a car. My fiance' has a crossover that we use to hauling/carrying needs so a truck really isn't a must. if we do need it for some reason we can go rent one.

I'm not trying to deter you from getting one, but just try to giving you some advice from my mistake. if you do really want one for now is the best time to get one. When I traded my 2007 quad can in back in February I got $17,500 for it. Now they are brand new for that price here in Dallas. Most dealers are selling trucks at 50% off bc they can't move them.

I am almost 6 foot as well and currently drive a Nissan Maxima which has plenty of room for me. a 3 Series BMW isn't going to give you much space at all.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

I'll tell you this make sure you have Microfiber towels and you wash that thing properly. You dont want any swirl marks showing. Best wax is Zaino. Their wax is incredible. If you want something on the cheaper side, go for P21s. Another option is Menzerna Polishes/Waxes, great german waxes. If you got any other questions, shoot me a PM :apple:

Yes, it's very easy to get used to. I pretty much just taught myself. Being a car guy anyway, I knew how to drive one, but it just took a bit of practice to do it smoothly.

I really don't like driving automatics that much anymore. Manuals are MUCH more fun. I drive my Mom's car sometimes and I find myself reaching for the clutch constantly. :p

Manual is the way to go, IMO, but I can understand your concern, since it's your first car and all. My first few cars were automatics. The first two cars I had were "hand me downs," so I didn't have much of a choice, then the next car I got (a '90 Beretta GT) was also an automatic. My first manual was an '01 Cavalier and my current '02 Elantra GT is a manual and it's great fun to drive, even if it's only a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder with 135hp.

Nice Acura,

I have a black truck, and I have been looking for a good wax / clear coat combination to keep it nice. Can you tell me what you used, including what good towels, wax, etc. are good for black cars?

Thanks.

I used Zaino http://www.zainostore.com/

Wash (with microfiber cloth) and clay with the Z-18 clay bar and Z-7 Show car wash.

Then did 1 coat with Z-5 Polish for Swirl marks

Then did 3 coats with Z-2 Show Car polish (it must be activated with ZFX Flash Cure Accelerator if coats are done withinn 24 hrs).

There's lots of info and documentation on their site. I bought a 'starter' kit that had most of the things I needed, then a la carte'ed the Z-5, Tire treatment, etc.

The BIGGEST thing they stress is White 100% USA Cotton towels. Good luck finding that as Canon is no longer in biz. They thought I was totally crazy in Bed Bath and Beyond trying to find US cotton. Never did, but got the fluffiest Egyptian I could fine (and what was on sale at Kohls).

Also, this is critical, cut off all the trimming/binding/tags from the towels. This stuff is usually sewn on with polyester or whatever and that will scratch. Yes, your towels become a frayed mess after wash/dry (with NO fabric softener or bounce sheets!!!!!!!) but just cut it off. Mine are still good after 2 years but are getting smaller!

Good luck! Black Rules!!!!!!

Thanks guys, and to keep on topic, I bought a black 1999 4Runner (one owner) from an architect in Dallas. The guy drove it to work and back (10 miles), garage kept, rarely a passenger, no kids, hand washed / waxed, 70,000 miles (though i've put about 10K on it since January), original sticker, keys, book, and paperwork. I love the truck, and I love not having a car payment.

Thanks for the wax tips, I want to keep it nice.

Thanks for the compliments :) Yes I had just washed it, that's why there is nothing in the bed. Right now I have a bunch of stuff in it, and tomorrow I'm going to pick up a load of lumber for a deck. I use this truck as a truck, it constantly has signs or mulch in the bed. I thought about selling it when gas prices got high, but I would miss the hauling capacity so much. Almost 80k miles!

The cloth seats are great, I don't really care that much for leather. The cloth "holds you in". I did add heated seat elements under the cloth though, and used the Toyota seat heater switches. I use them constantly even during the summer. Cold AC + Heated seats is very comfy! I'm a member over at Tundrasolutions.com, lots of info there. If you find my username there (same as it is here) you can take a look at my site, I've done a lot of work to this thing like the navigation and bluetooth. Let me know if you have any questions.

Here's a recent project I was working on.

Many trips to the home depot and local nursery:
5 bags of sand
about 50 bricks
3 bags of crushed stone
3 loads of 2 yard topsoil
1 load, I think 1 yard mulch.

Perhaps that's because people tend to clean their cars before they take pictures of them.

This is my 97 Acura TL 3.2L, exactly like the day I got it. Only difference is I have bigger tires (not the crappy low profiles), Alpine head unit, and chrome shift plate. Plus I cleaned it many times since then. I really like the car, but I wish the guy that had the car before me did not put on this crap on it. Such as these rims and a the crappy paint job. The paint at first looked good, but over time is starting to fade and on the plastic peaces, I can see the original blue, same in the door jams, and engine bay.

My car: 2001 Suzuki Vitara. 2WD 4-cyl/2-liter, Automatic. Paid $11K in 2002 with 14K miles on it. Now has 103K+ miles on it, and still runs smooth.

I recently drove cross country from San Jose, CA to Round Lake, IL where i'm now living. I decided not to bring any furniture with me, so I just packed the essentials into my car (DVD's, games, MacBook, and clothes). Total trip was 2,452 Miles (~3946 Kilometers) Which to put into perspective for the Europeans, would be like driving non-stop from London to Cairo (Egypt), assuming you had an amphibious vehicle. I drove an average of 12 hours a day, stopping for gas and the occasional rest area. Took 3 days, but I made a slight detour to Indiana to visit my Brother (hence the A-B-C on the map), which added a 4th day to my trip. The photos above are just from a rest area in Eastern Nevada, along I-80, which I took all the way through to I-94 in Illinois/Indiana. Be thankful that smell-o-vision is not yet a practical reality. ;) I've also got a small dent at the lower-rear of the rear-passenger door. I have no idea what caused the dent, I was just driving down a highway one day and heard a loud crack from something hitting the car. I figure it was either another car kicking up something with its tires, or someone chucking a rock from nearby homes. Never saw what hit it.

P.S. You can listen to KPIG (http://www.kpig.com) online (see bumper sticker), they have a live stream available from their website (I don't work for them, just love listening to them).

Nice to see you finally got you a Seville. Very nice. Awesome color choice, too.

I seen one the other day with an exhaust on it and it sounded amazing. Northstars sound awesome with an exhaust. I know most people probably wouldn't do that to a Cadillac, but man, it sounded good.

I want a Mustang GT.

Thanks! I want the Corsa exhaust, but its pretty expensive. Just glad I finally got one. Waited year and a half, payed a little less than $11k for a car that once stickered for $54k. Great deal on the used car market. I love it to death.

Nope, not a thing done to it. It's still got all the original bits and pieces. I'm sort of experimenting with getting a different engine, but that's just because I am doing a little looking around for the heck of it, regardless, the original is doing well for 230k and hasn't had any major problems... only a dead battery last month. The worst that happened to it to my knowledge is that my father smacked into the side last year while backing out with his 4Runner, but to my amazement, there wasn't any noticeable damage to it... I suspect it will be a good car for many years to come. I'm sure a CarFax report would show very little, maybe oil changes, but not much else.

Your car looks absolutely amazing for its age! It reminds me of our last car, that we had. We had a 1994 Mercury Topaz in like new condition. It certainly wasn't a Toyota, but it was a nice and reliable car. Now I'm sad we got rid of it a couple of years ago.:( The Nissan we replaced it with is still going strong into its 12th year in 2009!:apple:

I had no idea those were that expensive when new. I figured 40k or so. They are nice cars, though. I've liked 'em since I was a kid.

They are real sleepers, too. Most people wouldn't expect a Cadillac like that to do nearly 150 mph. Do you know what the speed limiters are on those? I'm pretty sure that if ungoverned, they would hit 150.

Yeah I would have never payed $50k for the car new. Too many downfalls (cheap interior, build quality issues, typical GM crap) to be worth the money. The body style IMO beats the hell out of any current Cadillac, and only ties with the new CTS. The clean lines and low, muscular stance have always done it for me. I really wanted a Crimson Red or Sable Black one, but this one came at the perfect time.

The limiter on my particular car is 122MPH (never had it that fast). Only a handful of Seville's with the Z-Rated Tire Option Package were ungoverned. You can retune the PCM to take off the limiter, but since I don't drive that fast it doesn't bother me. Top speed is around 150 I would think;

I figured the build quality on a Cadillac would be better than typical GM? I know recent GM's seem to be MUCH nicer, especially when it comes to interior fit and finish. I forgot what year your car was. Too lazy to go back and look. :p

Yeah, I don't see myself driving that fast, either. The fastest I've had my car was like 100-105, I believe. The limiter on mine is about 121 or so.

The fastest I go usually is about 90 occasionally when passing or just messing around. My Elantra is actually the quickest car I've owned believe it or not and is very fun to drive. It also has the highest redline of any car I've had (6500) and I take it there quite often.

The new STS's are such a huge improvement engineering wise it would be hard to believe they were from the same company. The new cars have a solidity about them the old Cadillac's just don't have. Everything is well screwed together, materials are of high quality, and the trim pieces aren't of the lowest quality. On the other hand, I prefer the layout of my car to the new STS, the gauges look a lot nicer (digital), and seats are more comfortable. Material quality sucks, even when compared to my old Camry. The weatherstripping needs to be popped back in every 3-4 days, trim pieces are flimsy, etc. Regardless, I still love it to death.

* Fiat 850 Spider

At the same time as the Coupé/Sedan, Fiat also introduced the convertible sporty two-seater Spider, with the original 843 cc engine tuned to produce 49 hp (37 kW) which allowed it to reach a top speed of 145 km/h (90 mph) . The body was designed and built by Bertone.

hey, if that other guy can dream about his grandpa's car, I can rant about how they don't make small engine roadsters anymore

Oh, I thought we were talking 'affordable', as the Fiat was intended to be. :o

Maybe where you live. Not an option over here yet. Nor is the ForFour. :(

Which they don't make anymore :(

And Project Kimber which was going to resurrect them was killed off my Mercedes-Benz :(

My Elise was affordable: I bought it second hand. I sold my MX-5 (Miata to you) to buy it. It gets better MPG and is cheaper to tax...

I can't find proof/reference online, but all the rumours I've heard are than M-B refused to sell them the rights to the chassis etc so they would have had to start from scratch which was just too much.

They were all ready to set up the factory near me last I heard. I knew £13K for an AC Coupe was too good to be true!

I struggled to find details on the 850 spider, so here's what I have on the Fiat 124 cabrio:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/1974-Fiat-124-Spider-Red-Front-Angle-st.jpg

Price in 1968: US$3250, equivalent to US$16807 (http://www.1soft.com/todaysdollars.htm)

Unfortunately, the car I could compare to this one, the Peugeot 207CC does not seem to be on sale in US$!! it costs £17000 in the UK. The Miata/MX-5 costs how much? US$21K?
