View Full Version : emac 1,25GHz is too loud - turn off the fan?

I have an eMac (G4 1,25GHz) which is quiet well but the fan is much too loud. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. :D
I have already read a few articles about reducing the fan tempo but maybe you don't need a fan at all?
What average temperature should the emac have?

If you are running Leopard, you might want to try
- Reset PMU (SMU on newer machines)
- Reset PRAM
I sold an iMac G5 1.8/2gb RAM recently. Clean install with leopard, and the fans spins annoying high. Did above, fans aren't spinning as high, but still higher than 10.4. So reverted to 10.4 and sold without a problem.
If not software issue, then google: emac fan replacement, replace emac fan or something like that
I remember seeing a number of articles back in the eMac era. Example:

You do need a fan if you're going to avoid cooking your eMac ;)
My wife used to have an eMac, which lived in our bedroom and was on continuously. I don't recall it ever being noisy, but it may be that the bearing in the fan is going and causing all the racket.
A replacement fan shouldn't be hard to source - the only problem is fitting it, as eMacs are a bast**d to get into (dangerous, too - there's an awful lot of voltage floating around that CRT screen).
If you really know what you're doing, then you'll find a take-apart guide HERE (http://www.wilko.com/emac/), but be warned - it's not for the faint of heart. Otherwise, see if you can find a friendly Apple dealer with a service dept...

For what it's worth :-)
The Emac is still running, I gave it to my 9yo niece for Xmas..

You need the fan otherwise the CPU will overheat. However, you can slow it down considerably using resistors or a Zalman fanmate which will make it MUCH quieter and will still function normally. I lowered my 1.4ghz eMac's fan line to around 5-7v (I forget which) and it still worked perfectly and was a great deal quieter.
Just for the record, if I stopped the fan blades from spinning, the eMac would crash after about 5 minutes. So yes, it needs a fan.
