finding and creating new password.

i cant update my software because i lost my password to do so. it says to use the install disc, i used the disc and it says start but im afraid of losing everything. is it ok to press start and another menu will pop up to change password?
 
When booted from the disk look through the menubar items, I think there is one called Utilities and in there there is Password Reset.
