Leopard clean install

Hey guys, I want to do a clean install of leopard onto my Macbook. I have an external hard drive, what's the best way of backing up my data such as my iTunes library and such? Can I back up my apps? Or should I just do an upgrade install, are there any disadvantages to this?

There are a few different ways of backing up. Cloning your current drive to the external via an app like CarbonCopyCloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) might be a good idea...
