I have every finger crossed (and you should too!) that the SDK will be pretty wide open. My jaw drops at thinking of a VLC type client to play any media I have. That would be too cool for words.

the developer kit will not allow for other media players or extentions / codecs. It will have limited access to the phones services for security reasons also. Apple being one of the biggest media distributers and playback providers will want 100% control over this area of the devices.
