The FBI planted an electronic bugging device in Philadelphia Mayor John Street's office, a senior federal government source and two law enforcement sources told CNN Wednesday.

But the FBI disputed the report.

"We have not confirmed that at all," said FBI Special Agent Linda Vizi. "When the bug was found, we were made aware of it, and we will proceed from there."

The sources would not say whether Street was the target of a public corruption investigation going on in Philadelphia, the sources told CNN.

Rich Manieri, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan, said "Justice Department policy is to neither confirm or deny an investigation."

Street, a Democrat, is campaigning for re-election November 4 in a close race against Republican Sam Katz, whom he beat four years ago in a close race.

Street said bug's "timing is very suspicious" and that it was possibly politically motivated.

politically motivated? or criminal investigation? i wonder when we'll find out.

Yes they did plant the bug and they did know that the Philadelphia police routinly sweep the mayors office for bugs. Whatever their reason they have to realize that it has political implications. Pretty tactless.

Street was always pushing things on city council for the better (I think), but he always seemed pretty straightforward. Katz, on the other hand, likes the idea of adding to his prizes, including the position of mayor. It wouldn't be surprising to me that he would have friends bug the office in order to get his prize. He has no genuine interest in Philadelphians.

Yeah, it wouldn't be like the Republicans would think of bugging someone's office or anything in order to gain a politcal advantage.
They have morals and stuff.

No, they'd break in and tape the door latch open - none of this mamby-pamby bugging crap.
