Yep - extraordinary price, isn't it? A few quid more and you'd buy my house :o
PS I should point out that's the price on the Irish Apple site (converted from Euros to Dollars) - it's probably $20,000 cheaper on the U.S. site.....but don't start me

I was almost right - the maxed out price on the US site (with a couple of extras, eg printer and .mac subscription) = $27,340.90....about $10,000 cheaper!!
Holy smoley.

That is bordering on obscene. $10000!!! I'd take a first class flight over there and bring it back myself and still have change left over for a MBP!

I couldn't believe that price difference so double-checked. Okay, this time I left out the second display, software, wireless mouse and keyboard, all the other specs are identical (ie as chosen on the Irish and US stores).
Irish price: $33,075 (22,490 in Euros)
US price: $24,446
Incredible! The second display and software would bring the difference to over $10,000.
Okay, if you were rich enough to afford this machine it probably wouldn't bother you too much (:)) but that gap seems extraordinary to me. I know, I know, Apple products are always cheaper in the US than Europe....but by this much?!?!
PS Wonder is the gap as big if you bought on the UK site?
Do you have to add sales tax to the US price? The Irish price (and the UK one) will include VAT.

Aaaaaah, THANK YOU for the invitation! Really generous. Okay, I'll be there on Friday - make sure you're on time to collect me at the airport. And make sure there are 100% cotton sheets on my bed, I don't do polyester. I like tea (no offence, I'll bring my own tea-bags), toast and boiled eggs for breakfast (boil them right - not too hard, not too runny). Make sure you take the day off work so you can drive me to the Apple Store and get me back to the airport on time. Excellent. See you Friday.
PS How's the weather? What should I wear?

Yeah, sales tax has to be added to that US price alright, but I saw another thread that mentioned a configuration worth $26,190 where the tax was only $1,570....still criminally cheaper than Europe.
If you were in India the maxed out version would cost you 1,294,720.890 Rupees. Crikey, you wouldn't want to be paying in cash. "One, two, three, four.........".

10 grand is a simply scandalous difference...that begins to make it worth the risk of smuggling one from the states.

You could actually go a lot higher than that -- the MacPro can support up to 8 displays -- that's $14K right there, plus about $21K for the computer (with four *downgraded* video cards), for $35K U.S.
But you might have a little trouble with the customs agents when you tried to cross the border with nine very LARGE boxes.

Yeah the weak dollar means its better to buy direct from the US, not buy US products over here.

I wonder how many people will actually buy 32GB RAM from Apple with this. I guess somewhere under 20, its a ridiculous system they have going with memory, and it catches so many people who want just 1GB more, and can't be bothered to do it themselves. Shame on you Apple*.
*I take it back, I love you really. Ok, lets just be friends. With extras.

But you might have a little trouble with the customs agents when you tried to cross the border with nine very LARGE boxes.
Well, 8 displays would surely be a problem.:D
US officials don't check you when you go out, not even passport or anything. And in the Mexican side, you do get to two checkpoints, one in the border and another further on. But most of the times they don't check you, it's "random" (random as in 90% of the times they don't check if they see you look as a good guy;)).
If you only bring the tower you could just tell them it is for personal use and they won't give you much trouble. Or to make it in a safe way you could just pay the importation fee which would be much lower than $10,000 dollars.:)

Hmmm... I'm actually thinking about buying one.....
I already have a 30" display for my MBP so I won't need another display.
I'm thinking about an 8 core 3GHz model. I'll get the minimum RAM and upgrade later from somewhere else. I'll one up the graphics card and buy a 300GB 15000 RPM and a 1TB 7200 RPM drive.... I think I can afford that.
Thinking..........
Thinking.........
Thinking........
Thinking......
Thinking....
Thinking..
I just realized I can't think for myself. What do u guys/gals think?
EDIT: I just asked the Misses what I should do.. She looked at me and said "Go for it" Hmm... I still don't know if it's really worth it. I know it would be a huge up from my MBP and I really could use a faster rendering graphics card but who knows.....

Laugh it up but my Sun Ultra2 creator back in the day cost me almost 30K
It had dual 200mhz Ultrasparcs and 2GB of ram and a 20inch sun monitor. Amazing what you can get for under 5K today.

Why stop at 8 displays???
C'mon Apple, that's puny - you should, and can, do mush better than that!
If you think about it, each computer component has improved, like, a thousand fold over the last 15 years or so: CPU speed, HD capacity, memory, etc. However, the most important part of the computer, the one that you actually frequently interact with, the display, has barely improved at all!!! We had 1 (one) monitor per workstation 15 years ago and we barely have an eight-fold improvement on the most expensive high-end systems - talk about slow progress. I want at least a hundred-fold improvement here.
And do not get me started about keyboards and mice. Keyboard has stayed principally the same since the XIX century and the mouse is just about half its age. More to the point, however, is that we have had 1 (ONE) keyboard and mouse per computer!!! Where the heck is the progress??? I want progress - how about giving me a hundred keyboards and mice? C'mon Apple, do the math and keep up with the progress already!
LOL

Have you seen the alienware screen at CES yet? hehe That or a nice 1080p projector might sort you right out. Your lust for multiple mouses might be sated by a KVm switch, or well, maybe a touch screen.

GOt to money savingsexpert.com. Martin there suggests this practical approach.
Get your cheque book. Write a cheque to apple for the price of a mac. look at the picture of the mac. put the cheque on one side. Write another cheque to yourself for the value of the mac. then write a list of what that could get you (debt payment, holiday, car, phone, etc). You could do it in any number of ways - but having a bundle of hard notes in your hand, you reliase how much you're putting down.
Me? I'd buy one, but i'd wait till next week ;)

Yes, Macs are imports in Europe - I suspect most of them are imports in the U.S. too seeing as the majority of the stuff is manufactured in and shipped from Asia. Any way, that wasn't the point - the point is the size of the mark-up. Everyone would expect a difference in the price, perhaps a significant one, but $10,000 on this maxed-out model?? You think that's reasonable?

Sounds perfect! There shouldn't be a problem at Irish customs, although they may dismantle the machine to check you're not smuggling immigrants in. So long as you can put it back together again and deliver it to my door then we're laughing - see you soon!

I'm surprised you all are surprised about the price difference. Apple has for a while now (ever since the Euro out valued the Dollar) has set it's prices in Europe to be almost equal in the number of that currency. For example, $100 or 100 Euro (btw anyone know the html code for the Euro?)
Oh yeah, and for a maxed-out system (no software) it's two grand for tax in the US:
Subtotal: $25,262.95
Free Shipping : $0.00
Estimated Tax: $2,082.88
