When I try to start my 17" G$ powerbook under system OS X 10.2.3 I get the usual Sound followed by the usual screen with an Apple logo and a spinning wheel under it. Then the usual sign that various programs are loading. But the programs which load are not the normal ones that I see. Then suddenly I get a BLACK screen with a DOS-type message which says
Darwin/BSD (Local Host) (Console)
Login:
When I enter my usual login name it asks for a password. I enter the usual password and it sends back EVERY TIME "Logion incorrect" and I have to start over again.
It never works and there is no way it will start up.
I have tried starting from a system dick with the C key pressed. That won't work either.
If anyone out there has any ideas, I'd love to hear from you

THANKS

Have you tried minor variations in your password? Did you buy this new or did you aquire it by other means? Will the system CD boot allow you to reformat the hard drive?

I had the exact same problem on my PowerMac. Turns out that one of my memory sticks had gone bad. Once I took out the offending culprit, it works just fine. That was six months ago and no problems since. Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill
I can't do ANYTHING!! I just get a message all the time saying that the login was incorrect. The only thing that works is to switch off and start all over again. Then its the same story.
Its a new Powerbook and I've tried every possible variation of my user name and password.

Dear Yoda 13
I'll try your solution and get back to you with the result.

Thanks for your efforts.

Boot to OF

type

reset-all

edit: wait nevermind. That was for the mac-boot problem.

You deleted an important GUI file. It's booting into root, thats why your name is not used, and your password is not working.

Time to reinstalled X.

I'd love to be able to re-install from the original disks. But the Mac won't boot even if I insert that original disk and try to start up with the C key pressed. It always goes back to the same black screen. Any other suggestions as to how to re-install the system??

Dear MacMaelstrom,
If your answer was for my boot problem, What do you mean by "Boot to OF?. How do I do that?
Hope you can help.
Thanks,
