Apple fans wishing for a Mac desktop that was at least comparable in spec to the iMacs, but without a built in display have finally had their prayers answered!

Today, Apple introduced a new, fully configurable quad-core tower, with 4 hard drive bays supporting up to 4TB of space, and RAM expansion up to a whopping 32GB.

It ships today from $2,299 - the same price point as the high-end 24" iMac - and offers a base configuration of 2.8GHz Quad-Core Xeon processors, with 2GB of RAM and ATi Radeon 2600 XT capable of running 2 dual-link 30" Apple Cinema Displays.

You can read more about it here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&node=home/desktop/imac (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=CE229723&node=home/shop_mac/family/mac_pro)

I thought the same thing. We just need to find out if this beast has 1 or two processor slots?

Not seeing where you are getting the 2,229 price when the base price is 2,799 ?

you have to downgrade the cpu to a quad core. knocks 500 bucks off

Suggested configuration is the default - change the 2 x Quad core 2.8 to 1 x Quad core 2.8 for $500 price dive!

Gotcha, pretty misleading when it says that 8 cores is the standard.

The price of 2,299 is an even more stripped down version of the base model. If you click to configure it, you can cut off $500 from knocking it down to only 1 quad-core processor.

Nice! :)

This also reinforces the argument that there will not be a mini Tower.

Gotcha, pretty misleading when it says that 8 cores is the standard.
But 8 Cores is the standard minimum configuration.

You have to BTO to drop it down. So in this case it makes sense -- at least to me.

Because real Mac Pros have 8 cores. Anything less is just embarrassing, really.

Um.. ya... Mac Pro has been out for a while and it's bottom model has always been more powerful than the top end iMac. So their prayers have been answered for a long time.... Not to mention that Mac Pro has always been without a display so it's not a new idea.

What don't you people understand? IT STILL IS THE REAL MAC PRO. The 4-core model is still extremely powerful. It's more powerful than the top-of-the-line iMac.

Yeah... Mac Pros have been out for a while. Not at that price and spec though.

The former Quad core model was $2499 with standard 2x512 RAM and 2.66GHz Woodcrest, while the new Quad core is $2299 with standard 2x1GB and 2.8 Harpertowns and whatever else.

the previous generation of mac pro also had a "downgrade" option that was priced the same I believe. So if this is the "headless imac" then the 2.0 Ghz mac pro was also. It was a full quad core and everything. Really. Honest.

Yeah, it makes sense after the fact...but if 8 is standard that makes 4 substandard. So Apple's now making a substandard MP - who's gonna buy anything substandard.;)

Indeed. $2199. This one's a much better buy though, at only $100 more.

I'd think that'd be a Mac Mini. Show me a 4 core iMac. (downgrading Mac Pro).

And yet folks will whine that you have to spend all that money for a 23" ACD and get jipped an inch, to boot. :)

Not to mention they probably want a $1299 price point as opposed to $2299. :D

I was going to get the high-end iMac after MacWorld, but now seeing this... I'm thinking about changing my mind. My only problem is that I don't have a monitor laying around.

You can justify the Mac Pro at $2299 due to the power and scope for expansion, and you can do the same for the iMac due to it being an all in one, space and energy saving solution.

Then they each have their drawbacks - such as NO display versus a fixed 24" glossy one, harder to replace and/or repair.

Decisions, decisions!

You are way off with the math: an iMac without the monitor more than $2K???
Are you serious...or you are using non US Currency??

Headless we'll be anyone of us (not the mac) if we are paying that amount of money for a MacMini kind of mac.

Wha? I'm talking about the most affordable Mac Pro being comparable in price (but better in spec) to the current stock high end Mac.

The "advantage" of the iMac is you get a fixed display and more compact design for "free" but take a hit power and expansion wise.

When I was thinking that there was a gap between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro for a headless mac, I never considered comparing a 24" iMac vs a base Mac Pro. But you do bring up an interesting point when looking at the dollars involved.

Gah, I noticed the inclusion of that new keyboard as well. Will the MacBook Pro be the last to fall? Seems like I'm going to have to stock up on my preferred deep-travel-clicky-clacky-easy-clean-wireless-with-number-pad white keyboards of yore before they're extinct.

I think the 4 core Mac Pro is *PERFECT* . Easily upgradable. Real video card. Real desktop parts. Don't have to throw away a monitor.

To cinch the deal, all I need is confirmation that the 4core ships with an empty slot that I can later dump another 4core into to have a 'real' 8 core Mac Pro.

This *is* the headless iMac I've been dreaming of, but of course it is a 'high end' iMac. Of course I'd love a $1500 headless iMac too, but I think the 4 core Mac Pro will make a great replacement for my 1.83 Core (1) Duo Mac Mini :) :) :) It can do home theater duty now.

iMac = all in one
Mac mini = lowest price without monitor
MacPro = top of the line

Headless = without monitor

xMac what you are trying to get

In other order of ideas: using your criteria I'll should be paying around 50% more for a Ferrari without its instrument panel
