I can't wait 3-5 weeks for the 8800 bto
I might get the8800 upgrade later on but I will be using final cut studio and after effects with4 gb ram and 8 cores at 2.8

I'd imagine the difference between graphics cards would be most apparent when running Motion.

I think those are the two cards.
I'm thinking I might go with baseline and buy a 8800 later too. What's the chance of us being able to use a PC-brand 8800 after we know which mfg Apple uses?

I may be using Motion too
I expect I'll get the base card now - see how it fairs and can always upgrade later. At least then I have the machine for longer.

Overall mark was 9.3 for the base ATI and 9.7 for the NVIDIA 8800, Not much difference really.

think very carefully.
5 weeks now might be time well spent. its a £130 upgrade now. If you get the ATI and want the 8800 it;ll be £220 down the road

What about in the instances of say Lightroom, PS, maybe some FCS? Would the base card fair well enough?

8800GT is lots faster than x2600XT (more than twice). Even the x1900XT is quicker than x2600XT, in fact a fair bit quicker.
Still, I'm pretty surprised Apple put the x2600XT in the base config. They usually go for the low end (like the 7300GT). This is a nice mid range card.

I'm sure they expect to keep selling it as the base card for 500+ days :)
