Is there a way to group the folders at the top like in explorer on Windows while keeping the other groups just in alphabetical order so that other kinds of files are not grouped together? This would be great.

Arrange by "kind" instead of by "name"
EDIT: command+j for view options, at the bottom it has different options to arrange files and folders

The simplest way (I think) is to start every folder name with a space

Unfortunately this will group all kinds, I just wand folders to be grouped at the top and nothing else. All other files i want grouped by name regardless of kind.

than you might have to do what swiftaw suggested. I've never felt the need for it to be arranged quite like that, even when I use windows.
