What do you consider goth rock?

Siouxsie & the Banshees?
Joy Division?
Bauhaus?
The Cure?
Sisters of Mercy?
Switchblade Symphony?
H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty)?
Evanescence?
X Marks the Pedwalk?
:wumpscut:?

Goth rock could be a very general term covering nearly three decades of music.

You say death metal, I say goth metal, some say black metal, others say doom metal. Does it really matter?

No, thank you. I don't look at wikipedia as it's not really a relevant source for much of anything. That said, see post #7. There's no such thing as a consensus on music genres, because you can't quantify art.

I really hate to see post-punk like Joy Division and Siouxsie lumped together with 'goth-rock' just because that's what alot of people who dress like Count Chocula take as seminal.

I'd be willing to concede Bauhaus, although Peter Murphy seemed to regard it all as a big laugh.

I always considered Sisters of Mercy to be something like the "gold standard" of goth rock. They really are all things stereotypically "goth", sound-wise.
Love 'em or hate 'em, they make a great example when I want to introduce someone to the "goth" sound without completely annoying them. ;)
Me? I prefer the more industrial side of things. ie: Coil, Psychic TV, old Stabbing Westward, Machines of Loving Grace, etc.. etc...

Paradise Lost maybe? Not sure, but for me they are goth rock. Except for "Host" maybe, which is nevertheless a great album! *gets stoned by die hard PL fans* :p

Well I was going off of a mixture of lyrics, song themes and musical style, in addition to appearance. Joy Division's songs had a lot of sadness, a lot of sorrow and a lot of darkness, so I consider them to lean more towards goth than punk. But shoving a band into one particular genre over another doesn't ever work. Most "goth" bands never label themselves as such and are always a mixture of many styles.

Is it worse than New Order being lumped together with Skinny Puppy? That made me gag...

Which way does the offense go? Are you a Skinny Puppy fan protesting the inclusion of New Order, or is it other way around?

I still like (old) New Order (they sucked live, btw). The last Skinny Puppy album I bought was 'Too Dark Park', on casette tape, in 1992. As much as I dug it back then, I've long since found it unlistenable.
