View Full Version : New alluminium imac NO "ON" light or "ON" click!

Love how silent my new imac is but! (24" allu)

What really bothers me is when I switch on the imac there is no physical or any other click! and once its on theres no way of knowing that its on or not until the screen pops alive + when mine is alseep I cant see any indicator - so basically I dont know whether Ive managed to engage the on switch and at other times whether its on or off!

I want an indicater! I want feeeedback! Apple should have made the apple logo glow gently !! or at least some indication somewhere of wether the machine is on or not

you need to know if your machine is on or not ! - a light like the tiny tiny tiny red light when photo booth camera is ingaged would be enough!

Otherwise - quite loving this work of art imac! an absolute beaut

I have a USB lead plugged into the back of my iMac which has a blue LED built into it.

When my Mac is sleeping the LED still lights up.

You'll be amazed how you'll just get used to no light indicator being there!

I've used both the previous white model, and i currently own the Aluminum model - and although it bothered me at first - i am so used to it now, that it doesn't really matter no more.

The new iMac is a beauty - enjoy! :)

Hmm. Never even thought about it. I guess I've spent too many years ignoring the lights on all my computers. You'll get used to it.

never appreciate the sleep mode light on my powerbook.

And imac? nice. doesn't distub me when it sleeps.

Hey I.m weened off the "on" light already!-

I suppose the "no dynamic feedback" "on" button started me off - theres a whole 30 secs before I know wether or not Ive switched it on - I sometimes press the switch several times - I'm going to learn about this one too! soon though - I'm sure .

and you know a tap on the keyboard - thats a lot of uneccessary work to me - when Im off to bed I just want to glance n the office to see that all is off last thing!

but isnt it good to have such a silent machine its a nice problem!

I can't see the issue myself.

I agree for the most part except for the other day when the machine crashed without my knowing. I came back to it and the screen was dark. It didn't come back from sleep when I tapped the keyboard, and it didn't come on when I pressed the power button. I needed to force shutdown by holding the power button, and then I was able to turn it on. It was only by guessing that I was able to figure that out.

What crashed it was when I unplugged my BlackBerry while the iMac was in sleep mode. PocketMac caused a kernel panic. :(

I quite enjoy the total silence of my iMac and lord knows my Precious is mum on so much; but what about a hard drive activity light or indicator?

I was enjoying my quiet new mac until today -- disaster has struck!!

I have a new problem my Imac is only a few weeks old . Turned it on today after being completely off over night (with power supply off also) and the moment I touch the on button the fan kicks in full blast and never NEVER goes off - its a problem!

Will get my apple care on it on Monday but is this a common problem?

The fan has never come on before what ever I do!

No it is still there... on cold boot not sure about reboot.

Its funny, one of the main reasons i bought the new iMac is because it had no external lights, My ONLY reason for fully turning off (rather than just standbying my MacBook Pro was because i found the light so annoying when i was trying to get off to sleep!!

Haha i have a book that i cover the light up with, lol

Now ive gotta figure out how to block the green light :confused:

Heh. I was searching around to confirm that there really isn't a sleep light on the alu iMacs--got one at work a while ago and I just realized that the lack of a light was bugging me quite a bit. Thought maybe there was something I was missing, but obviously not.

In my case, on my way out of the office, I like to be able to quickly determine if I've left any machines I was working on on. Except with the new iMacs, the only way to check is to walk over and hit the keyboard.

Seems people who LIKE the throbber like me are in the minority, though, so I guess it's not an "issue" so much as an improvement. But hey, they've had throbbers since sleep has even existed as a feature! (Before, if you count the G3s and Yikes G4s that can't fully sleep.)

Machines need to offer their users dynamic and interactive useful feed back otherwise they resemble a useless lump of ... well.. anything ... anything that does nothing. It is a design shortfall.

A silent sleeping alu imac looks like an off imac
and it even looks like imac that doesnt work

but infact it is working .. but how do I know?

Imagine a room with a dozen of these still and silent and invisible work horses - "Just going to check if all the machines have been shut down."

I suppose it not really off subject

energy saving is right in there - multiply the problem by billions thats what computers do - theres so many!

The irony is that leaving a little light on could help to save some energy - or could it?
