Please help...I want to buy an iPhone.

I really want to buy an iPhone but I'm under the impression that if I buy one now I cannot unlock it to use on another carrier (for free). Is there anyway I can buy one now and be able to unlock it?? It might make it a bit harder that I live in australia but I have a friend going over to America soon so that's not really a problem. Thanks.

Ok here how things are with the iPhone.

Firmware version 1.1.2 pre-installed means 4.6 Bootloader which allows HARDWARE unlock via TurboSIM, StealthSIM (any other hardware method). This hardware unlock of the iPhone costs $100 minimum if bought.

Software unlock can also be used. However, at this time it is not currently possible. With the new 4.6 Bootloader only 1.1.3+ secpack can be used to unlock an iPhone via software methods.

However once the software version of the unlock is available there will be two applications you can use.

1. anySIM - The free unlocking application from the iPhone Dev Team.
2. iPhone SimFree - The paid unlocking application.

Both work fine however are not useable for the moment on a OTB (out of Box) 1.1.2 iPhone.


Hope this clears things up a bit. In short, unlocking an iPhone right now is very costly at the moment.

1. If 112 is still unlockable, 113 won't magically be unlocked.
2. No one knows when 112 will be unlocked.

i live in the states right now, but i am moving back to europe (austria) at the beginning of march.
here is my question.

should i buy the iphone now, get a stealth sim for 100 bucks, and everything will be fine, or is it better to wait until the software unlock is out? how about later updates. is that possible with the stealth or software unlock?

what would you do?

I really would not have a problem paying the $100 for the xSIM hardware solution. Or waiting to see if a software unlock either.

But, I'm thinking if I wait for a 1.1.3 to come out for a software unlock on 1.1.2 then when I buy a phone it will have 1.1.3 and not be unlock-able.

And the 1.1.2 ones will go up in price on ebay....

So, if I'm going to do it, I should buy a phone now, before the update is out all over....?

The iPhone's cost alone already stretches my planned budget (which I really want to stick to, no pulling money out of savings), which is very limited being a student. I'm not willing to buy an iPhone AND hardware unlock it...I'll probably get a used or refurb iPhone to boot.

So...what should we watch for to know when is time to buy? I'd need a software unlock.

What to do now that Apple has released 1.1.3?

First of all if you have the budget to buy an iPhone now it is time to do it. The sooner the better before 1.1.2 OTB's run out and you end up with an 1.1.3.

Highly suggest since now with 1.1.3 out you can wait for the software solution to OTB 1.1.2 which should be ready in around 1 month or less.

As I said earlier. If you have the cash to buy an iPhone now, it would be a *very* good idea to do so today if possible.

Have your friend look at craigslist.
That's what I did and I got a 4gb phone for $250.
It's unlocked with T-Mobile now and it's great.

So, with all this being said, if I were to buy an iPhone I should do it ASAP? I'm thinking of heading to the Apple store on Saturday. My employer will pay half on a PDA, and a guy I work with just convinced the boss to pay half on his iPhone. He used NEXTsim to hardware unlock his and use on T-Mobile. You don't think they'd have 1.1.3 on the phones in the stores already, would they? Now I just need to convince the boss to pay half on mine. I'm not a salesperson like this other guy is. I'm just a designer but I could REALLY use the iCal on the phone and my MacBook Pro to plan out due dates for jobs.

I think they're still clearing out the 1.1.2 iPhone's so you should be good there and you do not have to sign a contract there. That is something you handle when you get home and plug it into iTunes. The AT&T stores will make you sign a contract from what I remember but not the Apple store.
