Been lurking for years (entertaining for sure), but I had to register because you clowns are missing the obvious on this one.
It is the infamous Mac iTablet (iPhone'esque only bigger), and the "in the air" part is... the keyboard.
It's a floating holographic projection type thing that you type on, therefore freeing up all screen real estate and no smudges.
I think we were better off with you not registering :p

'Revolution' is in the air? (Steve has dubbed himself Tsar of Technology?!)
Perhaps the rumoured (although laughable) Apple record label?
Perhaps an Apple TV station? (Let's face it, if Audi can justify operation on a TV network for car related programmes, Apple would provide more enjoyable viewing!)
Maybe the Slingbox capability for iPhone and iPod Touch?
Possibly a new tablet PC with a 'revolving' screen in order to be accommodated by the rumoured (and patented) 'iMac-like' notebook docking station?
Final prediction; a new Apple TV line-up - considering Jobs had to downplay its success by labeling Apple TV as a 'hobby.'
Soon our questions (and hopefully dreams) shall be answered.

Actually, you can have the photo of the person you are calling show up either way (small as in the ad you are talking about) OR like you currently have (large, taking up the whole screen). Here's how. I will be using your "friend" Bob as an example of the person you want to have a picture show up on your iPhone:
To make it show up small, add the photo of Bob in your Address book contact list by cutting and pasting the image directly into the photo icon spot in Address Book. This will show up only as a small picture when Bob calls (as seen in the ads).
To make it show up large, have a picture of Bob in your photos that will sync up with your iPhone OR just take a picture of Bob with your iPhone. Now assign this photo of Bob as your contact photo.
Which Bob are you referring to?

Subtle ?? That's not the current iPhone interface when in a call.
It's blaring right at you.look at that iPhone. It shows the blue area at the top.Go make a call and see how it looks.
This is a new iPhone or creative license.
I would think this is just the video that shows on the display unit. Its just scrolling through to the next presentation point. The bottom part of the in-call options is cut off. Just a thought.

My vote is for cell phone provider. Apple was investigating buying up bulk minutes in the early days of the iPhone development, so, one never knows. They could make some serious change if they entered the cell business... But... What an expense for Apple!
OK... Maybe I like the iPhone front facing camera idea. Video conferencing on the go.
Doesn't AT&T have the iPhone exclusively for another 4 or so years.. yeah what is the apple provider going to sell as phones, a hacked iPod touch, or motorola?

Jan 11, 2008, 06:51 PM
Did you read the recent article on the history of the iPhone?
If i read it correctly i think it said in it that while negotiating with the carriers they said they were more then willing to buy up minutes and become a carrier themselves
Did you read the article? They were saying that DURING negotiations to get a carrier to agree to their terms. I'm sure their 5 year contract with att doesn't allow them to do what you are saying.

This has nothing to do with the sign really but it's my prediction. The iPhone is flashed based so it is a feasible guess. The Nike+ will never come to the iPod Classic though because of it's lack of a solid state hard drive. Running with your iPod Classic kills it faasstttttt.

This could be more of the same shrewd move they did with the Leopard menu bar, I know it's nasty but Apple are trying to get more PC users to switch and offering them something they are familiar with would help the transition
So Apple producing advertising with a similar font to Windows advertising will make it easier for PC users to switch platforms?! "Oh honey - look - Apple is using a similar font to Microsoft's fonts! I feel better about switching my computing platform!"

It's obvious to me that "There's Something in the Air" could mean only one of these things: Helium-filled Macs now float above your desk.
Macs now run on power transmitted wirelessly from an A.C. outlet using the new PowerZap Extreme Base Station.
To avoid lawsuits about hearing damage from iPods with the volume turned up too high, Apple has eliminated headphone jacks entirely. All iPods now play music only out of attached speakers you must carry around. Music transmitted through the air - an entirely new concept!

I wondered whether the banner did have a clue and the the in the air part was the bit where there was something. Well playing around with anagrams of 'in the air' I came up with 'I are thin', which could be a clue to the thin notebook. Then again the banner could just be referring to a new Apple pogo stick:)

Hydrogen fuel cell powered Macs that float to the nearest fueling station when their reservoir is running dry?
If you thought the current MBPs ran hot, the Aluminum based paint will actually be highly flammable, just like the Hindenburg. So you can watch your hard earned money go up in flames.

maybe something in the air might refer to an Apple TV upgrade which can now access a free network much like Amazon's Kindle service for downloading content. Didn't Apple buy some data center sometime ago? However, this seems costly.

I can remember seeing several times Apple's banners, whether it be on their website or at the Expo, and people nit-picking every little detail of it and then being disappointed that they didn't have a holographic touch screen.
Don't you think this could simply refer to the general excitement in the air at the Expo? That it's not a cryptic message, that it's not a secret hint to some crazy new product? Just a simple statement.
I think so.

FYI, I'd bet there's a buyout clause in the ATT/Apple iPhone contract that allows Apple to terminate their exclusivity deal with ATT in exchange for an exorbitant amount of money.
But given how much money Apple is making on each iPhone at this moment in time while it's still a hot item, it may make financial sense for them to pay ATT that boat load of money up front in order to make a zillion more iPhone sales to non-ATT customers.

I love the concept, but if the consumer had to buy an expensive adapter simply to be able to connect peripherals, I'm not interested. Perhaps if the notebook had 1 port - only 1 - which could connect to an adapter with USB and firewire ports, I'd love it. That's the way to go I think. Otherwise, a portless machine that doesn't include a way to connect peripherals cheaply would never work.

Jan 11, 2008, 07:31 PM
My guess: Apple will announce the availability of the iTunes store on the iPhone via any wireless network, not just WiFi. I assume that's in the future anyway, since it's a logical extension of what they already have and the 3G iPhone's connection will be plenty fast to take advantage of it.
In addition, they'll announce a Sling-esque function that lets you access your iTunes/AppleTV content at home from anywhere in the world using your iPhone (bonus points if it works with Macs too). Suddenly the storage restrictions on the iPhone and iPod Touch don't matter so much. It's all your content, available 'in the air', as it were.
I'd bet on video content being included in the iTunes app on the iPhone if this comes to pass - you'll buy something, it'll be downloaded to your AppleTV and streamed to you from home. No extra steps necessary.

If Apple enters the mobile phone provider business, it will be only in select markets they feel are critical to the iPhone's success and where they cannot come to an agreement with a local provider.
So you won't be able to get "Apple Wireless" in the US, the UK, France or Germany. Nor any other area Apple can land an agreement in. And chances are this threat will be successful in getting existing providers to sign-up, so it may never actually come to pass and as such would not be announced at MWSF.
If it is something to do with wireless WAN/MANs, if it is not using the 700MHz spectrum (even if they didn't buy any, they could have a deal with someone who did), then the next choice is ClearWire/WiMax/some other wireless WAN provider via being built in to the new MacBook Pros which would also be announced. HP includes Verizon WAN cards in many of their business-class laptops, for example.

Probably they will announce that new Macbooks will all include a 3G wireless modem with optional subscription to ATT Wireless. Were as PC vendors need to be careful about aligning with any particular operator, Apple has already aligned themselves with the choosen few. Additionally, ATT can offer bundled serivces with iPhone and iMac.:)
It should be a good show.

It would certainly allow Apple to get rid of the HDD-based iPods without the riot of folks who feel they must have their entire music collection with them. You'd still need local memory to hold music while away from a persistent connection, but it would allow you the freedom to call up songs and albums when you were connected.

Remember a while back when Apple bought that massive data center (http://sanjose.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2006/02/27/story5.html)? I've always wondered what that was all about. Perhaps we'll see the fruits of that investment next week? Apple becoming a carrier and/or supporting more sophisticated .Mac applications seems very likely.

Look, I\'m way excited like all of you, but I\'m tired of people hyping up unrealistic expectations and then being disappointed and whining. It is going to be cool but nothing universe shattering:
Q4 wrap up
iPhone 16GB (everybody that got one for Christmas will throw a fit and think they deserve some sort of compensation) and SDK with 1.1.3 & Touch update
iTunes movie rentals and all video content in the WIFI store as well
Apple TV update
Laptop speed bumps
One More Thing... Ultra portable laptop NOT the newton (at soonest middle year)
That\'s about it, maybe after they will quietly release 10.5.2 and new cinema displays I hope, but that\'s about all I\'m thinking and I\'m happy with all that :)

I can't help but think a new Airport Extreme that will finally support simultaneous Wimax, B/G/ and 2.4 and/or 5 GHz Wireless-N.
Possibly also a new Airport express with similar capability also.
This just seems like a natural progression for the wireless support of the rest of the products that use wireless.

I've just heard from a secret source that Apple will be officially announcing 4 things at MacWorld. They're "Something is in the air" teaser is a reference to the fact that the important announcements will deal with "wireless" technology.
1. Announcement #1: iPhone. Massive success. Upgrading to 16GB. As you may have heard (yadda, yadda), firmware 1.1.3. Expect it within the next week.
2. Announcement #2: iPhone SDK. Expect it in February, presenters: Delicious Monster and Slingbox Media. Demos. Presenting preview of iTunes 7.7, with support for application loading, etc. Introducing iChat, with video over WiFi. Will be released in February.
3. Announcement #3: iTablet/MacTablet. Multi-touch. MacOS X. Bluetooth 2.0. Georgeous. Shipping NOW. $999.
4. Announcement #4: iTunes Rentals & HD content. Works on iPhone, iPod, Apple TV. New major studios on-board, 24 hours, blah, blah.
5. And One More Thing: This is BIG. Apple TV2. Features: Revamped interface. Dual cable card support. Built-in DVR. iTunes WiFi Store & Ministore with built-in interactive television guide and live-pause. Casual gaming titles available through iTunes. Bluetooth 2.0. 5.1 surround sound. $299. Pre-order today, ships at the end of the month.
6: One MORE Thing: Apple TV remote doubles as a microphone, and AppleTV supports iChat for video phone calls, even during normal tv watching. Now available on Windows. Coming to iPhone in February.
Jobs shocks the world again, and competitors crap their pants.
~ CBWhat? Apple would never put iChat on Apple TV! That doesn't even make sense, even if it auto-reduced the volume when you have an incoming call. Now, I know you're crazy... are we the Jetsons or something? :D

Subtle ?? That's not the current iPhone interface when in a call.
It's blaring right at you.look at that iPhone. It shows the blue area at the top.Go make a call and see how it looks.
This is a new iPhone or creative license.
When is the last time you guys have been to an Apple Store?
This is NOTHING!
Apple Commonly uses a scrolling billboard in the shape of an iPhone to advertise the phone. This picture is nothing more than the previous page (the phone interface) scrolling down and revealing the new page. Nothing more.

If you look at the picture of the iPhone poster, it seems to have a couple of subtle differences compared to my iPhone:
http://images.appleinsider.com/macworld-banner-7.jpg
1) The white etching on the home button seems rounder than current iPhones
http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/button.jpg
2) The In Call screen is different, and is that a desktop above the call status? Looks like some file icons there
http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/files.jpg
3) Look very, very carefully at the top left hand corner: Is there a front facing camera hidden amongst the reflections?
http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/camera.jpg http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/camera2.jpg
Maybe I\'m just suffering from pre macworld hallucinations, but that certainly looks different to my iPhone...
Have you never been to an Apple store??? LOL, it looks different because it is not a poster, it is the big iPhone display that they show the interface and run adds on. The white part behind is a poster backdrop however. WOW you people seriously take things too far lol. Ridiculous!

 Global iPhone Computing Grid. Creating the Fastest Phones in the World.
That's what is up in the air. By joining all inactive iPhones not current being "used" at any give time, other iPhones can access the resources of those phones giving you "unlimited" power to tap and scroll at unprecedented speeds.
The feature has been built into the iPhone from the beginning, but has yet to be activated. An interesting feature which will be held until next year is the Global Domination. Once all the iPhones are activated around the world at the same time... the magnetic force will be so strong, that Microsoft HQ will blow up.

I saw this on another blog.. Its not from anyone important or someone linked to apple, but could this be something that could come out of "There's something in the air"? I have been out of the loop for a while so please don't flame me on the board. I personally think it will just be itunes movie rentals right to your computer or apple TV.
"If it's WiMAX, it'll be HUGE! An iPhone and iPod with WiMAX would leapfrog 3G. Both AT&T and Intel have been working with WiMAX for some time now and could be ready to implement it on a large scale. The broadband infrastructure is already in many of ATT's cell towers so all that's need is some WiMAX transceivers mounted on the towers to cover an entire metropolitan area.
Not only no need for 3G in the US, no need for DSL or cable broadband. A 3G phone would still be needed in other countries.
Apple could add WiMAX to its AirPort Extreme base stations and/or to Apple TV. It'd be a perfect match for a new movie download service.
This could be outta the park, folks!"

There are too many comments already to read... I'd be amazed even anyone makes it to this one but here it goes anyway.
#1 MacBook Air Jordan addition! It'll be a tie in with Nike who has made a pump inflatable cushion to protect from accidental drops.
#2 AirBox - It's a really expensive box of air with an apple logo on it. It's actually an Apple HiFi without any of the electronics inside.
Ok seriously...
#1 MacBook Lite with WiMax and/or a wireless external blue ray drive.
#2 iPhone gets wireless syncing
#3 All apple products get real bonjour wireless connectivity. Total wireless entertainment integration. Watch a video that saved on your iPod Touch, via your Apple TV controlled from your MacBook, all wireless.
#4 Wireless Apple Cinema display... power cord only.

No way will we see both 3G and EDGE models. Apple has continually stated that they will add 3G as soon as they can get good battery life. And it doesn't seem like that would make any sense from AT&T's perspective, either. Unless it helps with load balancing in some way..

Bingo! On Apple Airlines, if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can place your snack/dinner/drink order from your device, and it'll be brought to you by a mechanical arm that moves up and down the aisles by way of an overhead conveyor belt, and they also figured out how to clone Steve Jobs, so he'll be the pilot of every flight. I always think about the same thing from these posts. Including possible price points of products not released yet! It amazes me that people disclose the highest possible price we are willing to pay for a product. Did anyone say "FM radio for iPods" yet? Isn't that cool? What other mp3 player has a build-in radio? I just touch it like this, and BOOM, stereo music in CD quality, for free!...*pauses for frenetic applause and yells of "bravo! bravo!"* We partnered up with ClearChannel, and now, for the first time ever, you can have free tunes and news from all over the world! It's like podcasts on the go! Isn't that great?!
Most other player above 70 bucks have an FM tuner built in. THe only thing is, the radio seldom plays anything you want to listen too. Personally, listening to radio while driving makes me want to drive the car right into things. All those ads, soulless music and, worst of all, DJs make me very angry. I'm happy to have an iPod with an FM transmitter so I can listen to some relaxing music and podcasts.
Second point, FM radio is far from CD quality. Sound is compressed (in an analogue fashion) making soft sounds louder to make it cut through the airwaves better. I wouldn't mind satellite radio on the iPod but that would probably not fit in there nicely.
Now if your statement was just a sarcastic parody of Steve's Reality Distortion Filed (Trademark ?), I apologize for my pedantic correction. :o

Maybe Steve will start the conference with Mr. Neeson on stage and say, 'Me Steve. HE LIAM.'
The laughs shall drown out the misery of existence, Steve transforms into an archangel, and destroys the conference hall with super pope-vision lasers in his eyes. Then for an encore does a Sodom-Gemmorah moment on SF to prove he isn't just another divine spirit come to change the world and tolerate sin. From the Gates of hell emerges the terrible Ballmer to do battle... and thus the terrible dance begins. The monkeyboy dance.
Ballmer emerges from Gates? Errr... that's kinky right? :p

my wishlist/dream/guess for macworld:
a better/updated .mac ---> more into cloud computing :)
a notebook/subnotebook that uses multitouch+tactile keyboard. (i don't like the mock-ups that came out. to me that was a good try but apple can seriously do better than that, me thinks). Seriously. if there's one company out there that can do away with the keyboard+mouse combo and turn it into an adaptive interface (reconfigurable Input device something like star trek ui)... Apple it is. (though the likely hood of this happening is for Macworld 08, i know is far-fetched but not beyond the realm of possibility). :D
announcement for iPhone 2.0 (maybe ipod touch 2.0, though unlikely)
iphone/touch sdk that takes advantage of whatever air stuff apple's coming out. there must be a reason for taking too long to send it out the door!
may be they'll come up with an Apple TV 2.0. way cooler way to send/receive and enjoy media across a wireless network.

I agree. I think we're overdue for a new Airport Express.
I hope we see an Airport Extreme that is compatible with Time Machine.

I agree as well. We are missing quite a number of hardware options from Apple and plenty of tech is overdue:

- iSight (independent)

They launched WiFi at a time where nobody had it (if I remember well ...)
Actually, 802.11 was available quite some time before Apple started to sell it. I had used WiFi on a work project a couple of years before I bought a Lucent 802.11 base station and network for my house - which was about a year before Apple started to use it.
Apple's big contribution was to slash the price of 802.11. I spent about $1k for a base station and two PC cards (and marveled about how much cheaper it was than when I deployed it on a work project).
Apple came in and sold the same setup (literally the same silicon chips in some places) for a couple of hundred dollars.

Apple and its catch phrases. I'd guess 'There's Something in the Air' means everything is wireless and has to do with the 'cloud' (internet) as jobs calls it.
On the hardware from the UP could connect to its Docking station solely using wireless. Wireless USB (which would also connect the external optical), Wi-Fi/WiMax, Bluetooth, Wireless charging etc
Also iTunes wi-fi store may now support over the air video downloads/streaming straight to iPhone/iPod Touch (including general wireless syncing)/Apple TVs etc.
Maybe general near-side pairing of Apple portables kind of an expansion of Bonjour
I dunno. I need to stop reading rumor sites and just watch the Keynote on Wed morning and call it a day.

Alright I'm tired of reading all of these and not posting, so here goes:
Someone on page 9 or 10 mentioned Wifi- and that's what I'm thinking.
Apple is always about changing the game. Maybe Apple's exclusive agreement with AT&T is for wireless PHONE service. So what if Apple created the iPhone 2.0 that goes strictly over WIFI? Or both?
And the greatest part - wifi is so abundant, Apple wouldn't have to create a new network from scratch. It already exists without Apple investing a dime into the architecture!
Can you imaging Jobs in a board room meeting:
"So let me get this straight. We don't need to build a new network, or buy minutes from a provider? All we have to do is create a device that uses existing wifi, which most people have in their homes already and and at work, and get free at coffee shops, airports, even rest stops?
And it can sync to iTunes without wires?"
You get where I'm going with this??? Throw in a "light as air" sub-notebook and....
....it's no longer the year of HD. It's the "Year of Air".

Last time I checked (yesterday), bluetooth is not standard on the Mac Pro, at least on the german store. Anyway, bluetooth does not have the bandwidth to get any kind of video stream going. It hardly handles stereo audio.

I immediately think of the Gyration in air remote (Really innovative product from a couple years back, now utilized in some degree with the Nintendo Wii)
Maybe a new in air mouse to be coupled with an Apple TV? Let's face it, the AppleTV has mediocre options for video playback (I want HD content, and I want at least 5.1 sound), and the Apple remote is a joke compared to a Windows Media Center machine.
Then again, two years ago was proclaimed by Apple to be "The year of HD". Never mind that you can't get HD quality out of iMovie anymore.
I'm hoping for something really decent for the living room. I've got my fingers crossed.

Now we all know that Steve Jobs always has a much larger, long-term perspective and business strategy than most CEOs. So, I was skeptical that the slogan could be as simple as the addition of WIMAX or a lightweight touchbook or an updated HD/Blu-Ray Apple TV that streamed back and forth with your other Apple devices over 3G and Draft N. So I decided to google the phrase "there is something in the Air" and "Apple" and see what came up. Here is what I found most interesting:
http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/erm0561.pdf
It's a 2005 discussion about the importance of podcasting to education. More interesting in the article is mention of the impact of podcasting upon human civilization's ability to communicate. This is the kind of thinking that would merit attribution to Steve Jobs. We know Steve has mentioned in Apple meetings that the direction of Apple is about the ability to create and DISTRIBUTE content, hence the connection of Final Cut and iTunes. Steve has always seen the marriage between video, voice, music, and the spoken word and the need for a distribution medium which is as accessible and simple to use as are Macs to the Mac consumer.
Thus, I suspect the "Something in the Air" theme has to do with the marriage of all Apple products towards Steve's stated goal of perfecting the ability to mass communicate high quality video, images, voice, music, etc. to the masses (via iTunes and all Apple products of course). In order to accomplish this, he's got to make the Mac computer the creation station and the iPhone/iPod, Apple TV, and likely sub-notebook/newton-like tablet device able to freely pass the content. To do this, he's got to leverage all the wireless bandwidth he can (hence the Starbucks wifi access (with ordering and iTunes a way for Starbucks to increase revenue and co-brand their complimentary products)), open up the potential for access to all AT&T Wifi-spots, and introduction of 3G into the new products (tablet, iPhone2, etc.). The Apple TV HD wifi problem has already been licked with draft-N, so introduce a new Apple TV with draft-N and a faster processor to handle 1080p footage (with a Sony 1080p Blu-Ray Drive to boot) and Apple suddenly sets itself up to dominate the hi def disc market the way it's done it with iTunes and the iPhone.
Apple strategy is all about building a brand of products that are interdependent and provide additional value to the consumer if purchased together as a family. All of that content we create on our computers, combined with that content we can download to our computers (or our devices which will synch to our computers -- wirelessly "in the air of course") from iTunes (whether it be podcasts, movies, songs, or audio books) makes for an "easy", familiar, one-stop shop approach to how purchase, create, store, play and (most importantly) "distribute" our media. We're going to use Steve's computers, devices, network and software to do it because its simpler, sexier, smarter, faster, and better than any alternative. Sure, there will be nay sayers (mostly Redmond junkies who don't get it yet), but world consumers will flock like sheep to this "air lifestyle" because it will be the coolest thing that we all wanted but never really knew until Steve Jobs figured it out for us (because we're collectively pretty bad at effectively knowing and communicating what we want and mostly because most big companies don't care what the consumer wants, they only care about fleecing our pockets and running off with our money).
So, if I am correct, look for a series of new products (yes some will be perceived as just badly needed updates, but Steve has been waiting to bring them together like an orchestra) such as:
1. HD Apple TV (with Blu-Ray because the discs are out there and if Steve can get BD purchasers to buy up his HD Apple TVs he'll have them on his network for a generation and make gobs of cash from them).
2. SONY BDs in all new macs (because HD video is central to this Apple Video-centric strategy, he wants you to use his software and computers to make your HD movies until the point that all of your relatives have HD Apple TVs capable of getting the same content via his iTunes Network). Which means that the new Mac Pros already have BD drives in them and will get a firmware update to enable them after Mac World (just like he did when he hid draft-N in the iMacs for months).
3. Final Cut Studio and Express updates to be able to burn BDs and iTunes-streamable HD content (you can already do this on iTunes and Web Gallery).
4. A space upgrade to Apple's secret You Tube (aka Web Gallery) to accomodate all of that HD content you'll be creating.
5. 3G built into all MacBooks (including the MacTouch's that will be released next week) with enticing AT&T discounts to users who connect more than one data device to their network, with Apple getting a slice from each account, of course.
6. Free access to all AT&T wifi spots around the world for all AT&T iPhone and soon to be MacTouch customers.
7. A huge expansion of the iTunes library with the addition of nearly all of the rest of the major labels' and movies houses' content into iTunes (DRM Free for the most part).
8. A 3G iPhone announcement (but won't be available until around May).
9. Sony announcement that it will distribute its films and music via iTunes.
10. Ability to wirelessly synch all of your recent generation Apple Devices.
11. Potential announcement that Apple is Purchasing Adobe and merging their products into Final Cut and Aperature (thereby grabbing a huge PC-link into iTunes "Distribution").
With all of this, Apple will make it easy (but not necessarily cheap) for you begin your journey into your future Apple lifestyle "in the air." See you at the Apple Store (or Best Buy)...

It's acyually a typo - it's supposed to say something in the hair and Steve is going to pull a *insert preferred gadget* micro nano out from behind his ear.
In seriousness, a wireless Apple MediaCenter would be cool, put that in your front room with all your media on it then have your imac in your office, MacBook in the den, (and one in each kids room and your bedroom if Apple have their wicked way) everything would be 100% accessible all the time and if the MediaCenter was also the broadband router it would all be available remotely as well.
They could even make it look like the G4 Cube but in Aluminium and glass...mmmm
That sounds quite plausible. After testing the waters with the AppleTV and gauging the response which on the whole has been positive, I wouldnt be surprised to see a MediaCenter just as you describe. To extrapolate your description, the content could also follow you from room to room i.e. watching a movie in the living room, decide to watch the remainder in the bedroom and the content could pause, redirect and resume on a Mac in the bedroom. All wireless as well.
As for a cube design? Well, maybe ;)

Something in the air? I see hundreds of smoldering Radeon X1900 XTs being hurled at the stage by angry owners of pre-Early 2008 Mac Pros during Steve Jobs keynote, that's what!
All kidding aside, this does not bode well. Looks like 2007 all over again. This board is really gonna light up Tuesday when, at the end of 90 minutes of iPhone this, iTunes that there won't be any mention of updated MBPs. The ultra-portable does not count. If it happens, it's gonna be underpowered and overpriced.

Honestly, I don't think this is product related. Anything product related would more than likely be covered in the black cloth. Notice it says 2008. Perhaps its a message about how Apple is taking mindshare and there is something in the air about Apple and its compelling to people.
Just another way to look at it.

If you look at the picture of the iPhone poster, it seems to have a couple of subtle differences compared to my iPhone:
http://images.appleinsider.com/macworld-banner-7.jpg
1) The white etching on the home button seems rounder than current iPhones
http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/button.jpg
2) The In Call screen is different, and is that a desktop above the call status? Looks like some file icons there
http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/files.jpg
3) Look very, very carefully at the top left hand corner: Is there a front facing camera hidden amongst the reflections?
http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/camera.jpg http://www.codefarm.co.uk/userpics/camera2.jpg
Maybe I'm just suffering from pre macworld hallucinations, but that certainly looks different to my iPhone...
That looks like the poster has a cutout where the blue is with an LCD display behind that would normally show some video of 'a call in progress' but may have been closed and you are seeing the desktop of the computer used to play the video. Hence, the two .mov's on the desktop.

Outside of a Penryn update for the MBP, what significantly needs to be done to the MBP otherwise? And the Penryn update would seem to go without saying.
And why doesn't an ultraportable count? I think more people might very well be disappointed if all Apple has to announce is an inevitable Penryn-updated MBP but leaves out an ultraportable that people have been looking for for a while; as far being "underpowered", what's your definition of that? Most ultraportables are inherently underpowered, because their purpose is not really to be workstations, but to be good at the kinds of tasks ultraportables are well-suited for (which don't require heavy battery-draining power).
And I still don't get why people treat the 2007 Macworld as a non-event, even though it was the unveiling of the iPhone, which outside of the product itself was one of the first major new platform unveilings for Apple in their history. The iPhone was about more than just the iPhone itself, but about new UI concepts that are going to define Apple's products for years to come. Just because it wasn't about a typical laptop or desktop form factor, it's still very much Mac-related (and in fact showed the expansion of the Mac itself beyond those form factors to the iPhone and the future iPod).

3G would have needed FCC approval. We haven't seen anything so I cant see it happening soon.
Wimax allows Apple to stay away from other peoples business models and get some seriously ranged bandwidth out there. I see it as more likely so educators can use less base stations to cover campuses and have bigger bandwidth.

I wish we could all become a little more "green" and kill off hard media (such as Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, etc) once and for all!
Just think if we did this now, we can save ourselves from having to buy the same content in five years in a new smaller container.
So many people are buying into this idea that they can only get 1080P content on a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc, which is not true. Technically it can be delivered on normal DVD's. Granted the files are bigger, but still, come on!
Would you rather have HD content available on a device like an Apple TV (just an example) or have to load up a disc everytime you want to watch a movie? I for one want all of my content on hard disk (and yes I do have redundancy...).
Just imagine how much easier life would be if every couple of years you might need to install a new codec versus going out to buy a new piece of hardware!
Alright I know people are thinking, but the files are to big to download, well, what if you could go into a store, walk up to a vending machine, put in a 32GB Flash card, select your movie, download it onto your card, go home, insert card in your computer and download the content to Media device. Hmm, this actually sounds like a good idea...I wonder....

And why doesn't an ultraportable count?
Simple: because I'm not in the market for one.

I look forward to seeing the new products. I only hope it doesn't disappoint. Sometimes, Steve gets excited over some silly stuff (Flower Power and Blue Dalmatian, anyone?).
"There's something in the air" makes me think of airwaves, as in TV. That's nice, and I hope it does good things for the iTMS, but I'm more interested in the hardware side of things (even though I'm not buying at this time).
Here's hoping for something cool, not just a bump.

I agree all of those would be nice, although I suspect we'll still have to wait for a real MBP chassis update. Who knows, maybe this will be the show when they finally address some of these issues - although I wonder about a modular design while still maintaining a 1" thick chassis.

I remember reading an article stating that the cost of getting the content of a DVD to someone via Internet is higher than the production and delivery cost of a DVD. This counts for both monetary costs and climatic costs. You need to keep your servers running which take tremendous amounts of resources to produce and to run. The electricity for those servers is likely to be from coal power plants which isn't really the greenest thing around etc.
I like your thumb drive idea, although it would take some time to get an HD movie copied over.
