How can anyone not think this is in reference to the new thin laptop they will be unveiling with WiFi built in. It's obvious to me...
Or is there something in the air at the Moscone center. Quick...everyone take your gas masks and duct tape!

This is about Apple and major airlines integrating iTunes sales, and iPod docks into planes.

Yes, that's what I think it means...maybe wirelessly. They've done cars that support iPods...this is the next logical step.

So here's what I think what it all means...

Someone mentioned of global wifi or wifi anywhere.. That could be quite probable.. I read somewhere that VERIZON announced that they would be opening their network to any devices that reach the minimun requirements etc

The Verizon announcement doesn't really have anything to do with that; it basically just means that they're finally opening up their network so that you can easily get another device and use it with it; this is something that people on GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile have been used to for some time; it's just Verizon catching up with the industry, essentially.

Apple's not going to be doing anything with Verizon's CDMA tech though.

One interesting thing about the WiMax speculation is that it would be a potential conflict with Apple's relationship with AT&T, since Sprint is the main company doing WiMax right now.

An Apple owner who owned an iPhone and a WiMax-enabled Mac laptop, for example, would need to maintain two separate data contracts with two separate companies.

I have been thinking they'd just build in HSDPA 3G in it to work on ATT's 3G networks, but I mean, wouldn't that be redundant once the 3G iPhone comes out?

I have a handful of ideas:

1) more content over the air: iTunes adds ebooks to get back at Amazon for getting into their music market  this would compete with Amazon for all of Amazon's new opportunities (books, music, and movies)

2) big big changes to Cinema Displays: integrated iSight, integrated dual band wireless-N...all of which enables it to become a client like a "media center extender"...access online & local content and access TV through perhaps a built-in TV tuner. perhaps even an iChat client (computing done on a Mac) that enables videochat in the family room or video conferencing in the conference room. Expect deals with online providers for lots of freeeee content.

3) MS is about to push WindowsHomeServer pretty hard and I'm sure Apple has been coming up with a solution. Aggregate all your content on your network into a server, access all of it within the home, and perhaps .mac to access it remotely.

Something in the air? how about every piece of content in the air in your home onto your Cinema Display; and from wherever you are outside the home onto your iPhone

Well, it wouldn't necessarily be redundant; even if Apple were to allow a 3G iPhone to tether, there would be plenty of reasons to offer built in HSDPA/UMTS into a portable Mac, so you didn't have to be dependent on tethering to another device for the connection.

I think this is fun and all. But in all seriousness, I don't think the tag line has to do with a particular product announcement. I think it's purely an expression of how well Macs are selling and gaining marketshare. Certainly doesn't mean we won't see some great new products, though.

Agreed. However, I do think we can safely discount any WiMax networking because only Sprint has the infrastructure for that so far. If Apple is coming out with an ultra-portable, they know that many of those customers are already iPhone users and would not like a separate data plan with a different cellular carrier. I think it's illogical.

What makes more sense to me then is ATT 3G or an ultraportable tablet that connects automatically to a wireless base station and accessories consisting of CD drive, USB ports, mouse, other stuff whenever it gets near your set up. That would be pretty sweet.

Greeting from Liverpool, UK!

Hmm... after sleeping on this, I'm leaning towards:

A convergence type development of content delivery, connectivity access, hardware and software. Something VERY new and VERY different emerging from the established product range, possibly centered on a radical transformation of the Notebooks, MB and MBP (and new AirBook, naturally). This is NOT just an upgrade, this is a complete change of approach. A paradigm shift, no less.......... iTotal, iVolution, iHavenoidea.

We will not see Steve just getting on stage going... we got this, this and this... thank you, good night. It will be more... epoch making. Am I expecting too much?

Well, I thought I should add my views.

I think the tagline is referring to their announcement of iTunes Rentals... so we will be getting everything over the 'air'waves. Downloading on our Macs, iPhones, iPod touches.

Tagged onto this, I think we may get a new iPod classic, with Wi-Fi, so we can download onto our hard drive based iPods at last.

I am still convinced there will be 'one more thing'... and I would like this to be an ultra-portable, but Apple know what we have all been speculating about, and I think they will make us wait longer, until mid-year. When demand is at its highest Apple always seem to deliver. So maybe the 'one more thing' will be something unexpected that would create more sensation and cheers from everyone. I am not sure what, but it'll blow us all away.

ventro
Jan 12, 2008, 03:13 AM
Definitely not any variant of Helvetica. It looks like Myriad Pro Light or an Avenir variant.

Regarding the keynote, you should expect something low-key compared to 2007. When you read the Wired article about the iPhone, you realized how hard it was to create - 150M, countless man-hours, 2+ years on TOP of the time it took to get multi-touch working well... a product introduction on the scale of the iPhone will be something we get to see every 5-10 years.

I expect to see the discontinuation of the mini and the introduction of a new media-centric mac to take its place, with its associated iTunes announcements (HD?) and a new mac laptop (not ultraportable, but thinner and a new industrial design).

I wouldn't be at all surprised if "There's something in the air." doesn't simply refer to the already existent iPhone. I mean, isn't the new firmware and development kit supposed to be out around now?

I highly doubt any WiMAX capabilities. I just haven't really heard of any major WiMAX providers in the US. The most I can find about US-related WiMAX is an article (16 hours old, according to Google) that states Sprint will be rolling out a WiMAX trial in 3 cities. Even if Apple bothered to put WiMAX in the laptop, how would you use something that isn't even in place yet?

Also, I suspect WiMAX will be insanely priced, similar to how cellphone carriers like Verizon do with their current wireless internet plans. We didn't see Apple putting Cingular/AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint stuff in their laptops.

All I'm really expecting is new iPhone firmware and a SDK, since that's what Apple has actually talked about, as well as a very slim MacBook (which may or may not be "ultraportable").

If anything will be updated, its going to be the iPod touch.
AT&T dont have a contract with that, so Apple could sign up with Verizon.

Lots of great suggestions here. For my two cents I think that it's probably referring to several things but one of those is (hopefully) wireless syncing so I don't have to plug into a dock unless I want to for charging.

With so many iphone and itouch accessories you hardly need to dock your phone to your computer anymore for charging, you can charge in your iHome, or your car or wherever so to provide wireless sync would be one more improvement.

Looking forward to Tuesday!

Of the few comments I read over at AppleInsider the most interesting post came up with a story about Steve being very inquisitive in a conversation with Martin Varsavsky about FON. I didnt know what it was but there's plenty info here (http://english.martinvarsavsky.net/fon/fon-sharing-vs-leeching.html).
Basically it is the opposite of leeching: you share your WiFi connection with other FON users earning you bandwidth 'on the road' by Foneros giving you bandwidth back. If I understood that correctly.

I think this idea of sharing fits Steve's 'Karma Thinking' perfectly. I can think of a few scenarios, like that Sling-type of service rumored, giving me access to my movies on the road or a GPS-like service that is actually very accurate cos there could be many Foneros, making pinpointing your location more precise. Or an iPhone using Skype anywhere in the more densely populated areas. Making Edge or 3G only neccessary in more remote locations.

Serious people empowerment! Any thoughts on this?

Hey all.

I think this may be about iTunes music sharing and AirTunes enabled on the iPhone and Ipod Touch.

Imagine a HiFi replacement with built in WiFi.

Place them around your house.

Play music through computers *and* handhelds on the net.

Listen to music in cars without cables.

Share music with friends *easily* and *socially*. Imagine a shared Party Mix, where everyone can approve (move up) and or disapprove (move down, or remove) songs from everyone's Party Mix set. The music plays continuously, like a big distributed jukebox. Now that's a party where everyone enjoys the music!

The iPhone and iPod touch are entirely *incomplete* until these things are all possible.

One huge strength of the iPod has been the dock connector. Imagine if Apple "replaces" the doc connector with AirTunes as the standard means of distributing audio.

Time to buy some more AAPL :-)

I like the idea of air being free.... free to air TV... or free tv hulu style.... and more DRM free music...

I think the theme that might come out of this is free content. We know that Apple has investigated advertising on iTunes, who knows that it wasn't for TV shows and movies??

I think the possibility of a tuner in Apple TV, free TV shows just like Hulu and Ad supported movies.... all add up to a big snub to Universal.

Lets not forget, the major sponsors (ad partners) of Hulu are INTEL (chips) and CISCO (iPhone trademark)....

After reading through all of these dreams of what everyone wants to see come out of Macworld, I'm really hoping Apple brings something to the table of the international consumers.

Coming from Australia, our iTunes store only sells audio, music videos & games. Thats about it. We like so many other country stores don't get the tv shows or movies, which is why I think the Apple TV has been such a flop. Why would I want to buy one when its only going to do audio and music videos to my tv? Sure there's youtube, but watching those few minutes still doesn't justify the few hundred dollars just for that pleasure.

Whatever Apple release I'm hoping its something everyone can enjoy, because I'm beginning to fear that with so much US only user stuff happening, they will begin to lose that great traction they've been gaining in international sales. Then there's the iPhone which is another whole market unknown to Australia. Though its coming, but its anyone's guess when.)

Hope that makes some sense, just wanted to throw an international users perspective into the mix as I haven't read in the previous dozen pages, and I think its worth people remembering.

If they do, I bet they call it Macbook Air or something. I mean it's possible, they did release the super thin keyboard last year.

It's like Apple version of the DaVinci Code...

If this years Macworld has as much to do with Macs as the last one, I would suggest, this Air-Thingy has nothing to do with Mac at all (last years MacWorld was mostly disappointing)

I suggest, it's the fact that Apple wants to reinvent the phone, so they have to reinvent the provider too. Let's see if America will have another cellphone-network-provider (something in the Air!) in the following days (well, don't bothers me, not on the same Continent).

If this is the case, I would suggest, Apple should start a new conference, call it AirWorld and do all the Mobile-Things there for those people who actually do care.

Font Geek Alert!

They have not changed their font!

As near as I can tell from the photos, that is indeed Apple Myriad. There is a light version of the typeface which I believe is what they are using. So no change, except for weighting.

In the Vista logo, Microsoft does indeed use a font similar to Myriad. It is called Segoe. It is very similar to the Myriad family. But, both of these fonts owe their "heritage" to the Frutiger family originally released in 1975 (Wikipedia is my friend).

Myriad and Segoe look extremely similar. Even their kerning and character heights are close. The biggest difference I have noticed is with the lowercase t and the lowercase a. The t has more of a curve on the bottom tail and the a is more rounded in Myriad while Segoe's a has some straighter lines in it.

Now, somebody made the comment of the sign looking too Vista"ish" for their liking. That is understandable. But, let's not forget that Microsoft only started using Segoe with Vista. Way after Apple went with Myriad. If anything, Microsoft chose Segoe so they could look more like Apple's branding. True Apple went with a lighter weight than usual this year, presumably to hint at "something" light and sexy in the air, but it only looks like Vista because MS previously copied Apple's typeface choices in their new logo.

That being said...it is a beautiful font family so I understand why everyone would want to use it.

Enough of the iPhone picture analysis already! Read the thread, it's already been pointed out that it's a large scale model where advertising screenshots slide up the screen. All you're seeing is the previous picture (a Mac desktop, probably demonstrating how the iPhone connects or something) with the in-call screen sliding up over it, in mid-slide. The 'camera' is one of the notches in the van. The button looks a bit different but it's just a large scale model it doesn't have to be perfect.

Sheesh people really scrape the barrel for ideas here :D

ARGON?
Perhaps Apple is closing down. When you call they will say, 'Sorry we ARGON.'

LMAO that's terrible but it's a good job I didn't have a mouthful of coffee or it'd be all over my screen by now :D

That something in the air is CO2 and Apple will make a big unveiling about being completely ecological now :)

You may be on to something there, that's the most believable theory I've heard so far. With all the buzz about "reducing your carbon footprint" these days (whoever managed to turn it into a game was a marketing genius) Apple would be silly not to take advantage at some point and point out how much greener Macs are than the average PC or whatever. Maybe the Steve will even unveil a green coloured iMac :p

Other thoughts on "something in the air"

- Quickly dealt with by saying "well, there's love in the air today because you're going to love our new products"

- Maybe it's Steve's words, there will be nothing released, just a load of hot air ;)

There is no new camera in the top left corner, nor any 3G conversation, no extra screen at the top either. The "camera" you see in the pic is simply the hood of a car passing in background being reflected in the window!! The iPhone is simply for display use and OFC they use a LCD-screen connected to a regular desktop and not the actual iPhone OS X on it to display the different "iPhone-screens"; that explains the folders or files or whatever in the blue area.

My guess is that iTunes will support wireless syncing of content, contacts, calendar etc over home wifi and public wifi for iPhone and iPod touch (also over edge for iPhone).

Another possibility is that you will be able to buy movies & other high def content for download from your iPod tough/iPhone, your home iTunes will then download it and transfer to your Apple TV automagically.

Alex.

You got it!!!!!!!!!!!

This is about the movie rental over wireless and all the devices all working together to bring music, photos, movies, and information to you wherever you are. part of that maybe some wireless upgrades to carry the load and iTunes to bring it all together.

But is is not about OSX only computers, this has to work over windows also to have the large penetration they need, so iTunes have to play a central role.

I wish we could all become a little more "green" and kill off hard media (such as Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, etc) once and for all!

Just think if we did this now, we can save ourselves from having to buy the same content in five years in a new smaller container.

So many people are buying into this idea that they can only get 1080P content on a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc, which is not true. Technically it can be delivered on normal DVD's. Granted the files are bigger, but still, come on!

Would you rather have HD content available on a device like an Apple TV (just an example) or have to load up a disc everytime you want to watch a movie? I for one want all of my content on hard disk (and yes I do have redundancy...).

Just imagine how much easier life would be if every couple of years you might need to install a new codec versus going out to buy a new piece of hardware!

Alright I know people are thinking, but the files are to big to download, well, what if you could go into a store, walk up to a vending machine, put in a 32GB Flash card, select your movie, download it onto your card, go home, insert card in your computer and download the content to Media device. Hmm, this actually sounds like a good idea...I wonder....

I hate to sound like Al Gore, but let's think green and stop being stupid.

I don't disagree with your premise. Discs are really outdated for those of us who can already see the future. The problem is that for the majority of consumers, HD downloading distribution will come through the established method of discs for sometime because it is in the current interests of the movie houses, the big retailers (look at Apple's new relationship with Best Buy), and the manufacturers of the equipment (e.g. Sony BD drives and players). So in order for any real solution to work for Apple in the long run, they have to get a piece of the present and the future distribution systems (e.g. iTunes, HD Apple TVs with Sony BDs, and of course all of their computers with BDs as well). If you look at Apple's model, it makes a great deal of sense of to give its users all of the options (because it makes them the centerpiece of home computing and media and mobile and online media as well). Bottom line, more HD options are better for Apple's future position (which will make them dominant players (vs. all consumer electronics companies, not just MS)) in the living room, home office, car/mobile, and and the distribution of audio and video content to AND from all of these super convenient and easy to use devices that consumers crave.

Hilarious reading the in depth analyses of the font. My favorite 'proofs' so far (from MR and AI):

- Myraid Pro Lite font = proof of Pro Lite Laptop
- Myriad Pro typeface owned by Adobe = Proof that Apple are to buy Adobe
- Variation on Apple's normal typeface = proof that these banners are FAKE!

I personally feel the 'something in the air' tag refers to the forthcoming availability of THunderclap Newman's back catalogue appearing on the iTunes store (initially US only but worldwide by end '08);)

1st- Welcome to Macrumors!

2nd- NOW THAT'S AN EDUCATED GUESS! :)
But what about rentals? And one of my wishes... New/or updated displays?

Thanks for the welcome! Rentals are a must (and of course Apple stands to make billions from them along with the content providers who don't have to make their own distribution networks but can leverage Apple's and to keep the antitrust litigation away Amazon, etc...).

New/updated displays... I believe Apple has already updated the hardware in the displays (without specifically saying so) to include HDCP (which is necessary for retail BD movie playback). However, given Sony's recent demonstration of OLED TVs and Apple's introduction of that technology in the 15" macbooks this year, my suspicion is that getting OLED beyond 15" is technically very hard to deliver in mass (or at least has been). Given Sony's recent announcement that it is ditching its rear projection technology for LCD/Flat Panel Displays, it would appear that larger OLEDs are only a matter of time. Given that Sony is the Apple of TVs (always the very best in class), it would make sense for Apple to leverage the Sony partnership to which I alluded earlier to propel it into the forefront of OLED for the desktop. So, the question is, is OLED ready for primetime at the display sizes Apple requires 24", 30" and beyond? I don't think so. But it might be later this year. It would not surprise me to see Apple announce refreshed LCDs displays that actually compete in the current marketplace (e.g. sub 5 ms response times, higher resolutions in the smaller models, and looks to fall inline with the design pattern set by the new iMacs... Maybe one smaller OLED model with a promise of larger OLEDs in the future (as they did with the 17" flagship MacBook Pros).

Just some guesses (not sure how educated they are).

12. New Super Thin Cinema Displays with iSight.

Yep. Very possible. Thanks for reminding me. But I don't believe they will be big OLED because I don't think the technology is ready for primetime in the 24" and 30" realm... but they'll make a best in class LCD that will sell like hotcakes and they'll take us by storm next year with big OLEDs (maybe a 20" MacBook Pro then too).

* Start with an iPod Touch
* Make it 2-2.5 times wider and taller, but not much thicker.
* Like the iPod The screen dominates.
* Runs the iPhone/Touch version os OS X.
* Syncs media (and documents) with your desktop Mac like Apple TV.
* Touch-screen, of course. Navigate via multi-touch gestures.
* Note: no keyboard--keyboard, when needed is on-screen (a compromise, I know--this will be the most controversial feature among those that think it has any use at all.

Whereas the Touch is your iPod-around-town, the
"iFlyAway" is your iPod-around-the-house. Where an iPod sits in your pocket when you aren't interacting with it, the iFlyAway is sitting on a table or counter. When using it you use two hands instead of one. So it will naturally sit propped up at an angle, I think. There's also the idea that two people may be using it together (to watch a video or work on homework or a painting a picture together, etc.

With it you can do:
* All the Touch stuff: email, web browsing, photos, video, music (has OK speakers for listening within 5')
* Also focuses on household productivity, so supports editing, viewing and syncing of iWork documents. For that matter, it exposes each user's home folder (that is, it includes a version of the Finder.
* Video chat will be demonstrated at the conference, too.
* The iPhone/Touch SDK is also for this device. This device will offer developers a lot of possibilities--sky's the limit.
* A popular app for demos will be "FingerPaint"

Pirates of Caribbean 3 is a two disc set, so it is possible that if both discs are dual-layered it would be 100GB of data. With that said, I just read (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1018/piratesofthecaribbeanatworldsend.html) that one disc is Dual-layered and the other single. So that means it's only 75GB at most.

Disc two of the set only contains roughly 90 minutes of content....so I wonder whether or not this set had to be a double disc set or was it just a marketing ploy...."Methinks" it was the latter considering all of the bonus footage is in SD.

I've been told that typically a two hour movie in 1080P is normally less than 15GB.

Basically I'm just trying to get people think outside of the box and not be fooled again.

My money has been saved for an updated AppleTV, and I'm fairly confident that's going to be announced along with the iTunes rental stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if they released the ultrathin notebook, but I can't see them naming a product line "air." It's not cool enough for Apple, and way too obvious based on the banners.

I'm going outside now, 26 pages laced sporadically with lame jokes and wild speculation has done an injustice to my education... Must accomplish something non-virtual today. I'll be tuning in again in three days though for sure.

Indeed, remember that the 11" Sony OLED display that is just shipping to stores now costs like $2500:

Apple is always about changing the game. Maybe Apple's exclusive agreement with AT&T is for wireless PHONE service. So what if Apple created the iPhone 2.0 that goes strictly over WIFI? Or both?

And the greatest part - wifi is so abundant, Apple wouldn't have to create a new network from scratch. It already exists without Apple investing a dime into the architecture!

While Wi-Fi is expanding, it is not ubiquitous. Also, many commercial sites require one to log-in to access it. So if I start a call in Starbucks on T-Mobile, but head back to work, as I pass out of T-Mobile's signal and into, say, the McDonald's on the corner, I will likely drop carrier until I can log back in. Plus my IP address will likely change between the two (different DHCP scope addresses), which would likely cause my connection to fail, dropping the call.

This is just another case of Apple's over-hype-dissapoint-everyone gig. Remeber "Top Secret Features"???

I signed up to say two things:

(1) Over hype? Apple hung a banner at an event called Macworld. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Apple users have now debated and analyzed the message and font choice to death. So you tell me... who's doing the over hyping?

(2) For the people suggesting streaming of movies and music to iPhones and TVs... I've been saying this since the interview with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs last year at D5. When asked what he thought the future was for computers and the like, Jobs commented that he saw more convergence and more software/web combinations (much like iTunes). He also noted that .Mac had been far under-utilized to date, and indicated that much more would be coming as they sought to rectify that reality. To me, if .Mac allows for me to store REFERENCES to streaming video files (whether rentals or purchases streamed from their servers), and the iPhone provides an interface for sorting through those video files via some form of internet connection, then my iPhone's 8GB hard drive just got a whole lot "bigger."

If this is indeed the direction they're heading, and Tuesday marks its arrival, it would be a welcome addition to the iPhone/.Mac/tv.

Here's the link to the Gates/Jobs interview (audio on and video versions) on iTunes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=256972720)

Now that would be a brilliant marketing strategy. Get the most out of your iPhone (or iPod Touch) and :apple:TV by owning both of them. Automatic sync, wireless ordering, use your iPhone as a remote to control your :apple:TV. Unlimited entertainment at your fingertips, a perfect integrated entertainment solution! Especially if PVR functionality is added to :apple:TV. This sort of development could allow the :apple:TV and iPhone to finally enjoy great success comparable to that of the iPod.

Most other player above 70 bucks have an FM tuner built in. THe only thing is, the radio seldom plays anything you want to listen too. Personally, listening to radio while driving makes me want to drive the car right into things. All those ads, soulless music and, worst of all, DJs make me very angry. I'm happy to have an iPod with an FM transmitter so I can listen to some relaxing music and podcasts.

Second point, FM radio is far from CD quality. Sound is compressed (in an analogue fashion) making soft sounds louder to make it cut through the airwaves better. I wouldn't mind satellite radio on the iPod but that would probably not fit in there nicely.
:o

That made me think of something, didn't the CEO of AT&T let slip something about 'iTunes Radio' a few months back?

I didn't read the whole thread so feel free to **** in my hat if someone mentioned this before, but wasn't Apple one of those bidding on the 700Mhz wireless range?

Perhaps they're integrating some sort of Apple wireless tech/service into their line of products starting with some unveils this year. iPhones and iPods and laptops seem the obvious choices but some sort of rental service integrated into :apple:TV that sidesteps the internet could be very interesting. They wouldn't be able to surprise launch something requiring that sort of infrastructure but they could announce it as underway for the US market in 2008.

Anyway, I'm saying this is wireless if there's a clue in it and probably service oriented.

Especially if PVR functionality is added to :apple:TV.

As much as I'd like it, I don't see it happening...I had always held out hope that eventually some sort of integration with Elgato EyeTV would happen.

Although with the recent SlingPlayer/SlingBox rumours, it has me wondering whether that will become the integration they introduce to connect TV programming to the :apple:TV.

From Apple's POV, it may be a better fit than Elgato's stuff, because it's not intended to record programs, just used for watching live TV (and in principle, the SlingBox and :apple:TV models aren't that different...just different target devices)...they could add a Live TV option to :apple:TV, and because there's no recording, there's no impact to their iTunes video download revenue - more money for Apple, and the networks don't get pissed.

Guess we'll see in a few days... ;)

I simply took the phrase: "there's something in the air" and went to an anagram website.

Since we are talking about networks, I assumed apple would call it "iNet"

Since it is a secret: I had it include the word "Shh" and I eliminated the word "a" in the search.

Here it is:

The big announcement will is:

"shh mini iNet theatergoers"

Which I am guessing is a small iPod device that you can watch movies on. Oh Crud! Wait a minute. They already have one of those. Back to the drawing board.

iPhone:
The leaked firmware version cannot be 1.1.3 but it has to be 1.2.
Minor revision changes indicate minor fixes/changes but according to the leaked information the new version contains some very significant changes.
The fact that the firmware version on the leaked software was 1.1.3 may indicate two things:
- it was either a very early testing version of the software >> the final one might be significantly different
- it is fake

OS X:
If Apple wants to continue the frequent updates of OS X then it is time to announce the next release (expected release date: 2009). We can anticipate a short teaser and the announcement of the official name of OS X 10.6.

I've stayed out of the fray on this whole debate, but something I stumbled across today on AT&T's Web site gave me pause, and maybe someone else can answer as to whether or not it has always been there.

I was looking at iPhones for myself and my partner (tax-return season is coming!), and under AT&T's iPhone FAQ page, I found this (bold for emphasis):

"Q. What type of coverage is necessary for using data on iPhone?
A. In order to use data such as email, Google Maps, YouTube videos and web browsing, AT&T recommends using iPhone in a 3G or EDGE Network coverage area, or from a local Wi-Fi connection."

Here's the actual page link: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/iphone-faqs.jsp

Has it always said 3G or EDGE, or is this new? Or, just a boilerplate from AT&T that made its way into the iPhone FAQ?

I really don't want to fan the flames on this, but with all the press over the past year about the iPhone not being compatible on 3G, it did strike me as a bit unusual that AT&T is saying "3G" in their FAQ.

People thought Apple would become its own MVNO before the iPhone was announced - but they didn't. It would be quite odd for Apple to go that direction after signing a contract with AT&T until 2010 - if they wanted to go the MVNO path, they likely would've done it from the beginning.

..maybe the product they produce will be iphone/ipod touch size and technology with a SEPARATE folding bluetooth keyboard. Then suddenly that recent docking station patent becomes relevant. Want something portable?.. take the macbook nano out of your pocket and play with it. Want to do a little typing? take the bluetooth keyboard out of the other pocket, unfold it and get to it. Want to use a DVD burner, firewire stuff, USB , printer, ethernet etc etc etc? Plug the nano into the hub and oh look!.. You get a big 20" screen incorporated into the hub too! (and the [nano] isn't so heavy it causes the hub to topple over!)

Is it far off science fiction fantasy? Not really. I have a palm TX on which I carry multimedia on, has my schedule, task lists, mail, pdfs, etc etc. Connects to a fold out (iGo) bluetooth keyboard and lets me efficiently wordprocess when I want that functionality, runs about 7 hours between recharging, has SD/MMC expansion, wifi, ir blah blah blah..

Its technology that is a couple of years old I'm sure.. apple must surely have caught up by now, right?:D

This had got to be a hint at some sort of wireless or internet based technology. Either that or they're just taking advantage of everyones anticipation, or it could be entirely unrelated and be simply a statement.

It was also when Apple dropped the "Computer" from their corporate name, formally positioning themselves as more then just a computer company.

So perhaps "There's Something in the Air" will refer to a new direction or a new market Apple is moving into...

"Somthing in the air", huh?

I'd imagine that whatever it is (or, more importantly, isn't) will certainly lead to disappointment in the air around MacRumors.

Has anyone actually waded through all these 29 pages (and counting) of excited speculation? I read pp 1-2, skipped to the end then clicked randomly in the middle.

FWIW (not a lot), I think
a) the "something" in the air idea is probably right, ie the tedious Beatles on iTunes

b) I really wish the blow-up MacBook Air with inductive recharging idea was true

Completely off-topic, what's the longest thread on MR? How much more nonsense do we have to write to beat it?

No need to go through 700 odd posts. I just did. It's not worth seeing them all! The rumors so far: It's all about wireless, Apple TV, thin tablets TVs Cinema Displays and laptops.

something in the air aka Wireless products/themes:
Apple gets Movie rentals, and also TV programmes via Sling Media. You add the hard drives, Sling sorts out the TV programming via the new SDK. Can sync or stream to all your Apple wired products (inc via Back to my Mac).
The NAS without the hassle. Airport v2/3.0 to accomodate this.
iPhone - SDK, update, GPS add ons with Garmin (and their software for Apple), other add ons.
Wireless Apple displays (Think Display Port tech)
Wireless 3G/WiMax/HDMI incorporated into laptops, Apple TV, everything else so you can create a dynamic network, all extenders to the hub.
Wireless iPhone syncing (lossless to aac downconversion to the iPhone too?) (sync content contact calender etc)
Wireless sales at Apple stores via wireless chip and pin readers - cut queues
Wireless iTablet shown (but not on sale yet. As per Wired)
Wireless Charging induction dock
Wireless sharing of music between iPhones. Please!

Other wireless things: Mighty Mouse (multi-touch, inbuilt GPS), iPods, USB, iPod buds, wired Bluray, Apple wiiRemote

Google - Apple spectrum deal. SDK finally reveals its secrets. Core animation shows big time. Mac Pro redesign for the late 2008 model; laptop redesigns, and also tablet later in year. Car products, on2, flash, and the usual fare (updated Leopard iTunes iPhones etc)

kudos to:
papja's view: Based in realism, it's what you should expect, pretty underwhelming and many hopes are shattered.
MD: "whatever it is, it's clearly going to just be another vehicle to deliver porn."
MacD: Global iPhone/Mac Computing Grid. Creating the Fastest grid in the World.
CWallace - idea of having a Apple network at airports to specifically get video and music downloads / charging pads
Chrisgeleven - for dreaming an ultimate dream for AppleTV 2.0: (Cable Card support (replaces HD cable box), DVR recording (Slingbox), Radio, Bluray/upconverting dvd slot, movie download rental/purchase (you rent, get for a week, it then goes back to preview only mode, but you can unlock it if you want to buy it without redownloading).
Corran Horn - p19 #454 Background to why above is gonna come this year.

Think big. 2008 only starts with MWSF. The wii remote, the wii remote hack, the zcam, multi-touch - the Tb drive, the HDTV, the wireless protocols, the higher bandwidth, the GPS Garmin Forerunner 405 (syncs with Nike shoes to add GPS location) Apple has a lot of markets it could go into after its biggest consumer gambles paid out. It's rival is the Xbox 360 gaming/media hub/Windows Media homeserver (which deletes files...) .mac's time to shine!/iPlayer by BBC (i'd faint if BBC relented and saw the error of their ways)

Apple money shot? Jobs pulls back the covers on the rig he's using. To show no wires connecting the Mac Pro with the dual screens. No wires between HDTV (which hasn't been given limelight by Jobs as a technology in the home yet), laptop, iPhone, and AppleTV3(inc Slingbox). And the iPhone's charging on an inductor pad (which is also the iMultitouch pad).

Check out the big players attending MWSF, and roll your own rumor! :D

If Apple had stuck to computers ( no iPod, iPhone etc etc) they could well be history today. Its not to difficult to see that the iPod saved Apple and was the beginnings of its new popularity.

Very good. Just about everything else is already wireless with Mac products. This may be a good time for Apple to put their patents to practice.

The reflection of the city over the Apple logo could hint to free wifi.
San Francisco wants to become the first city with free citywide bandwith.

Originally Google had planned to offer it, but the deal collapsed. The last rumor was a partnership between various companies to provide the service. The point was to turn computers into a great equalizer, and allow disadvantaged households the same ability to ruin their lives with internet porn. Or something like that. It could also be used to sync all the Apple products into one home network.

It's possible Apple scrapped their plans for 3G, and realized it was more cost effective and better publicity to just blanket the first city with wifi, in turn creating a city full of switchers.

i agree with you...it seems like apple thinking. steve seems to like the 'hey buy this device because it just works' mentality. start selling some kind of long range wireless device that will allow people free internet and even blanket those pesky remote places that ATT edge doesnt reach..so the iphoners can have faster internet anywhere

*however i don't think the reflection in the window is a planned apple intention for their ad**

I think that whatever is revealed, Wimax (or some variant of it and/or 3g) will be somehow involved.

Check this article:

Guess we'll see in a few days... ;)

Adding a Digital Tuner to the Apple TV amongst other things, would be a VERY SMART move! Considering that "all over the AIR TV" here in the US will be switching to the mandatory analog to digital switch! Everyone here will have to have at the minimum a digital tuner and there's a ton of TV users that still don't have one. Just think how many homes have multiple old analog TV's. This could be huge if done right!

This would give many people a reason to buy an Apple TV. Doesn't matter whether one has a PC or a MAC, either way Apple wins. Now throw in rental movies in addition to music etc and BOOM Apple increases their revenue many fold!

Now add to that a real choice of Ala Carte programming and Apple would be some real competition to satellite and cable providers.

Time will tell! Just a thought!
