Since, last year the only thing announced was the iPod with phone (although some of the iPod features are not available!).
I have been speculating that AT&T will add WiFi capabilities to all of their cell towers, thus creating the largest WiFi network. WiFi anywhere! You will not need to have cell service with AT&T but you will be able pay $20, monthly, for unlimited access! How cool would that be! No more Edge, 3G etc.!
Another thought about the CD! Imagine Steve on stage and unveils a super slim Mac Display! (Glossy or Matte, your choice!) Steve walks by, picking up the display, leaving the stand behind, and holds it like a tablet!!!:D
Wicked cool!!!

"Something in the Air" ???
The rumor I'm starting is that Apple has developed a new application/hardware combination to enhance their iLife suite.
It will be called iSmell.
It will add olfactory enjoyment to the visual and auditory pleasures we already derive from our Macs.
Sales will be slow, however, mainly due to the shameful body odor connotation of the iSmell name.

So...what. First we have to figure if this is real, or a really damn good (damnn good!) Photoshop...it looks convincing. Perhaps it has something to do with the iPhone acting as a remote for AirTunes or the ability to run REAL OS X apps, or something...the idea of a House Icon and "Air" just doesn't make much sense to me.
Edit: add...or perhaps, maybe you can use your iPhone to buy and sell real estate

Okay, yeah, the jokes have been great...I have had alot of fun over the past couple days with speculations, ideas, and all the other stuff (sometimes pretty wild and wacky)...but I have really given this some thought now, and I thought I would share one of my pretty solid (and very possible) ideas with you on the "2008: Something's in the air." discussion.
2008: Time to lose the white cable...
http://images.apple.com/airportextreme/images/specsairport_20070109.png
Apple has a great product in the iPod and the iPhone and these two products in the last few years have practically saved Apple and given them a solid name recognition in the tech community once again. Both the iPod (all sizes) and iPhone are beautiful devices...except for one wrangly protruding white wire we all cannot live without. The wireless technology is here now, in several forms (high speed IR, bluetooth, 802.11n...several others) that will allow Apple's line of devices to dock, sync, and download files at high speeds. Apart from the recharging aspect (as we will still need to use a cable or a hardware dock to juice up the device, for now) - wireless file transfer from your home computer should be an option - on all of the iPod devices...from the nano, to the classic, to the touch and the iPhone. This idea of "ditching the white cable/wireless sync" would correlate with this whole Apple Air, Home folder icon (ie. your home machine)...it's something that Apple has been needing to do for awhile, and the technology is here, and has been, to do so. The iPod line needs to become a wireless tech device, allowing you to load songs and movies from your computer, no cables needed. This is my prediction for "Apple Air/Something's in the air."

Something in the air = 'air guitar'. Images of garageband in the photo's that have been taken ??
I'm thinking that we are in for a revision of iLife that is full of wireless capability i.e syncing iPod & :apple:TV wirelessly, utilising the new wireless SD cards within iPhoto, perhaps some kind of wireless interface for midi keyboards and electric guitars in Garageband....................

Over the last several days, I have read all these posts. Some very creative ideas (some far-fetched, some not) have been floated ;) I for one hope there are some changes to the MacBooks, since I'm ready to buy.
The Beatles' songs being on iTunes has been mentioned a couple times, but not more than that. In fact, folks seem quite certain it won't happen. I seem to recall hearing that Apple Inc. and Apple (the record label) settled their long-standing legal battle over the name some time back in September. So, to me, the Beatles songs being available on iTunes seems a logical guess, what with the slogan and all. 'Something' is, after all, the title of a Beatles song.
So, to those folks out there who are certain this won't happen, I'm wondering why. Is there something I have missed or am not aware of?
FWIW, I'm thinking the MacBooks are due for a bit of a re-vamp, since everything else has been fiddled with lately, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. I do think the slimmer font and distinct bezel on the banner were intended, and represent something. For me, what comes to mind in response to the slogan (after the Beatles song) is 'wind of change'.

In truth, John, Paul, Ringo and George are on iTunes!
Just not their, Beatles albums?
Paul has an audiobook called 'Fresh Air'!!!
But I think this is more of an iPod announcement, which are usually done in September.

What's the probability that the entire iPod and iTouch/iPhone ranges get a wireless capability in 2008?
Could Apple dodge round the exclusivity deal with AT&T by going via a wireless data plan with another provider(s)? Skype via WiMAX; Sprint?
Or a lovely NAS beater?

Here is how it is going to go down....
Steve unveils a new line studio displays that match the look and appearance of the iMac line... glass and aluminum enclosures, available in 20", 24" and 32". This is an easy addition to the product line, as the two smaller sizes are basically an iMac sans the motherboard and drives. They mate perfectly with the current iMac line and show a better sense of design and uniformity than the current mismatched iMac/Studio Display pair.
In line with the "something in the air" slogan, and as a teaser, Steve reveals the new iPod and iPhone product lines with wireless sync capabilities (the first white tether is gone). He follows this with the new wireless stereo earbuds and headsets for use with the new wireless iPods and iPhone (the second white tether is gone). Wireless freedom for all!
The grand finale comes when Steve walks over to what appears to be an iMac and lifts the display off it's base, revealing the new Apple iPad. A wireless tablet with a 15" touchscreen. The unit serves two roles, acting as a tablet and as a standard display. The unit can be mated to a wireless keyboard and mouse, and the stand/dock is complete with hookups for peripheral devices. This is an iMac desktop that becomes a portable Mac tablet. The best of both worlds. How cool!
... or at least that is how it goes down in my dreams!

Maybe Apple aren't releasing a MacBook Air? Maybe the "There's something in the air" refers to Apple iTunes Rentals and the new sub-notebook will be called MacBook nano. The new updated Mac mini is to be relaunched as a Mac nano just like the iPod mini was. Just a suggestion. ;)

Ok so latest rumor (lets not get too overexited abou this right?): There was an article on the LA Times web site that states Steve had said it was time for him to retire. The keynote might be the occasion to do so.
I dont know what to make of it, since such an announcement would eclipse totally any new cool product he might present before or after the announcement. The article was removed from the LAT site shortly after publishing.

It doesn't make sense to unveil a new MBP until the Montevina platform debuts later this year. If they unveiled a new MBP now, it would have to use the same Santa Rosa platform with the only difference being Penryn chips instead of Merom. So you'd be pairing a new MBP design with a minor CPU upgrade that gives 5-10% increase in performance and battery life but otherwise no new platform features.
It just wouldn't make sense.

A silent update to Penryn is still possible unless Apple plans to drag the current laptops out for a full year like the iMac.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see a silent MBP update with the Penryn processors (heck, even the previous MBP update was silent, and that was much more major, given the 15.4" LED-backlit screen and the 8600M GT updates).
But it is not surprising that they did announce an update like this during the show; it would be on the scale of the Mac Pro updates, really.
But I think that if an MBP overhaul is going to come (new or updated chassis, maybe new multitouch trackpad, etc.) it will debut with Montevina, not with just a Penryn CPU update.
Philming
Jan 16, 2008, 10:54 AM
Or they could just push the whole line one step further, like putting the 2,4Ghz into the entry level model and making the 2,6Ghz standard on the high end. That would be the most likely move if an upgrade is to be announced in the next few weeks. And that would be enough for me to make my credit card fry.
Edit. Given the market share that portable computers represent for Apple, I would really doubt they let One year pass without an update.
The MBA IMHO is a very specific computer. OK it's thin, it's beautifull, but lets face it. It's not for people who want power on ther desk and who want to keep mobile, without having an added desktop machine. As my main machine, I wouldn't go for it.
Sorry little edit again : The line needs to be renewed imho fàr another reason : The performances between the first mbp are roughly the same as the mb. For a severe price increase. So OK the screen is bigger, keyboard backlit and all but well...

ETA May 2008, right? I'm guessing it'll be a fun Summer. Is the iPhone 3G slated for Jun/July or May? Just wondering if they'd have this come out close to when the Japan 3g and the international 3G version come out.

All we know is that the 3G iPhone will be out some time this year. Maybe it will get announced at the SDK unveiling next month. I doubt it though. I do not expect the announcement until Late Spring/Summer with a release toward the Christmas Season.

Does 3G mean that it's no longer running on GSM or does this just mean it replaces edge?
I don't know too much about this stuff.

I wonder if Apple will make a big press event of it. I too doubt a 3G phone so early, but perhaps they'll introduce new iPhone stuff (eg: 16GB version).
Does 3G mean that it's no longer running on GSM or does this just mean it replaces edge?
GSM was a 2nd generation phone. The 3rd generation is now branded as "3GSM". So 3GSM voice & data supercedes the GSM voice & data.
I've never seen a 3G handset that didn't fall back to regular GSM when 3G is unavailable... perhaps that's one reason 3G phones are bigger than 2G phones, but I'm not sure. So a 3G phone runs 3GSM but usually also GSM.
ps.
EDGE was considered "2.5G" in that it was much faster than the original GSM data. 3GSM has its own higher speed "3.5G" data technology that's called "HSPA" (High Speed Packet Access).
Philming
Jan 21, 2008, 04:30 AM
3G phones are bigger for the simple reason that they require more power. So bigger batteries. That's the reason Apple gave to justify Edge over 3G as well.
Given the fact the the iPod Touch is much more integrated than the iPhone, I guess Apple must now be able to shrink the inside of the iphone the way they did on the iPod and put a bigger battery in it. Hence releasing a 3G phone quiet soon.
Th'ats just my guess.

The upcoming Broadcom chip on a board for 3G will give a decent sized space saving, and also a much reduced power consumption for a 3G integrated chip.
When and where we'll see them, i''d say before / announced around the Japanese launch.
