I don't like pop music. I find it brain-numbingly shallow and pointless. I hate the fact that a pop song is the best thing since life for 4 weeks, then it's thrown back into the dump of other crappy pop songs. What is the point of writing a song if you don't feel it? If the song doesn't make you feel anything, isn't it just noise?
I reckon the lyrics are shallow. To me, they say that she's having sex with someone, and the paparazzi are snapping shots of it ("Public display of affection / Feel's like no one else in the room (but you)", "Cameras are flashing my way / dirty dance / And they keep watchin"). It's not admirable, it's not sexy, and the way its written, it sounds like she's more concerned about making sure photos are taken than about the love she's making.
But, as you say, the reason you like it is because it's catchy. You don't have to think about it too much to enjoy it. And if you like that kind of music, power to you, mate :)

I wish, in the US her music video for "Piece of Me" is #2 in the iTunes store.

Oh, wow. Ok, so a few of you like this song. hmmm... My question would be, "Is there anyone who likes this song that is NOT a teenager?" I am not a teenager. Therefore, I do not like this song.
BTW, my initial post in this thread was a mistake. This will be my last. Thank you.

I'm not a teenager and I like the song. Then again, I don't attempt to quantify art or categorize it into clichés such as highbrow or lowbrow.

I dunno the specific song in question, but I'm simply posting to say that I don't find anything intrinsically wrong with pop.
Do people only watch, deep, meaningful dramas? Or um, documentaries of substance? No. People watch silly comedies, whimsical musicals, brainless/ plotless action movies, etc.
Pop music isn't meant to be world-changing. It's meant to be fun and as another poster said, catchy. Nothing wrong with a catchy tune.
Don't be afraid to lighten up. ;)

I'm with devilot on the uplifting value of pop in certain circumstances. I have some wonderfully dizzy CSS songs on an iPod in the kitchen. They are great early in the morning when the woodstove has gone out and I can almost see my breath in the room and the fire I've laid won't catch right off and I could JUST KILL SOMETHING but it's too cold to plan a decent murder. I hit the switch on the iPod and there's CSS singing Bezzi or Off the Hook and I have to laugh, really. Just the right combination of desperation and cutting sarcasm for the mood I'm in. And in dance tempo!
But I wouldn't be caught dead with a Britney Spears offering in my library.

As much as I think Britney has gone crazy and her life is falling apart, the song isn't bad. (And no, I'm not a teenager) Just because she likes to show her parts when she gets out of cars, shaves her head, and seems to be a terrible mother doesn't mean that she doesn't have a great producer and a great co-songwriter (I don't know if she really has a co-songwriter, or just a songwriter, or if she actually wrote that song by herself...I'm just guessing)

I like Britney (my taste in music is pretty random, I'm into metal, indie, pop, rock etc.) - but its a shame about her personal life recently.
