slow network tramsfers on leopard

I have this really weired problem. I have an iMac and MacBook both have a n/ airport. Trqnsfering files is ludicrosly slow 8 mins for 500mb yet I am able to stream movies across to my xbox flawlessly.

I have enabled g only on my router, and AppleTalk on both of the macs to try and solve this problem. To no avail.

As any one had this problem andor so how have you fixed it?
